Summer teaching opportunity

<Tagline>Here's a great way to get some teaching experience!</Tagline>

Please take note of this opportunity to take a summer course in education and teach high school students!

Marie

--------------

Hello colleagues.
I am writing to let you know that this
summer we are offering to undergraduate STEM students who are
considering becoming teachers the opportunity to take an education
course while teaching high school students. We will pay tuition and fees for one course (EDUC 310), so this is FREE to students!

This is a shorter version of the NOYCE summer
program that we have been running for the past several years. NOYCE
proved to be a great way to expose students to the teaching field and
providing funding to those who opt to complete their teaching
    certificate.

Attached are a flyer and application. As we
are all beginning the advising grind, I'd appreciate it if you would
hang this flyer and, if possible, provide applications to those who you
    think should apply.

Please also share this with others who are advising or who you feel can assist us in finding the best candidates.

We will host an information session on Friday, April 4th during free hour in Sherman Hall Rm 208 (A wing). Applications are due on April 20th.

FYI:

1) Again, this is FREE to students! The course will run from approximately June 25th-July 25th.

2)
For those who successfully complete the summer experience and want to
pursue their teaching credentials, there is funding available.

3) For those who do not want to seek their teaching credentials,
there is no penalty. They do not need to pay us back for those credits.

(GES
folks: we love the Environmental Science students you have sent us!
COEIT: Anne established a track for MEs and Marie is working diligently
to find those future CS teachers!)

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Feel free to also direct interested students to me.

Thanks in advance for helping us spread the word!

Warm regards,

Hi Marie,

I'm working on my company's Women in Computing Day this year and we're

trying to double our numbers from last year (going from 20 to 40

girls!). The basic idea has been that we set up stations that girls

ranging from 8-14 will work their way through in small groups. The

stations are manned by a few Next Century employees (I'll actually be

working a station that teaches the girls basic programming using

Scratch) and some other contractors that we've reached out to. We're

looking for volunteers to help facilitate walking the girls from station

to station and making sure everything runs smoothly. I was wondering if

you could pass along the opportunity and my contact information to any

female students you might know either through classes or through the

CWIT program, we're going to be really stretched thin this year. I

believe we're reaching out to the engineering sorority on campus too via

another UMBC alumni as well.

Here's the general information:

The odd and mysterious story about the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines MH370 is gripping the world’s attention. With little evidence to go on, wild speculation about the cause of the disaster are multiplying by the day.

One thing is certain. The airplane’s Black Box will tell all.

But what exactly is this incredibly valuable black box that everyone is talking about?

The BBC comes to the rescue with this very informative story giving us all the answers we ought to have. Some will surprise you.

For example..

What color is the black box? (answer: bright orange)

How many Black boxes are there on the plane? ( 2)

How can it be found? (water activated pings)

What’s the battery life? ( not long enough)

Have a read and tell us what you learned.

Say goodbye to segregation and say hello to gender neutral bathrooms.

On Thursday, Maryland became the 18th state to grant transgender individuals equal rights under the law. ( Here’s our story on a similar law’s passage in Maine)

The Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014 has made it illegal to discriminate based on gender identity in regards to employment, housing, and public accommodations.

The bill, nicknamed the “Bathroom Bill,” by opponents has raised some interesting questions.

It is common knowledge that transgender individuals often suffer violence and ridicule particularly in public places such as the bathroom. Delegate Heather Mizeur claims that the bill will address

“people who are suffering real harm in this state.”

The opposition fears that the safety of women and children will be threatened. One lawmaker went as far as to state that the bill will allow

“predatory men to put on a dress to get what they want.”

Is this societal stigma or is the safety of women and children a legitimate concern?
