The Smartphone Curfew – Coming to a Town Near You?

Ah, the dreaded curfew. Kids everywhere are known to hate it and break it.

A city in Japan has taken the art of this ancient limiting practice to the next level. That’s right kids, no more using those fancy smartphones after dark!

Starting April 1, children in Kariya city, Aichi prefecture, will be banned from using smartphones after 9pm. The decision comes as cyber-bullying has reached a peak in the town.

Now, breaking the curfew does not mean little ones will be carted off to the jailhouse. The ban is just a request. Technically, there is no punishment if kids or their parents do not comply, but the ban seems to have the community’s support.

It seems like a silly attempt to curb kids’ behavior, but who knows, maybe the “ban” will make a real impact. Elementary and middle schoolers should be sleeping by 9pm, right?

Would you support a smart-phone curfew?

When Mr. Erdogan Tries to Keep a Little Birdie Caged

If there’s one lesson Recep Erdogan ought to take from this weekend, it’s that clamping down on social media is easier said than done.

The Turkish prime minister has become known for his ties to corruption and authoritarian view on governance. He took things to a new level, though, by imposing a ban on Twitter in his country.

His plan seemed simple enough: cut off Twitter, and cut off a potential flow for allegations of graft.

Worried about the potential vice-grip on free speech in Turkey? Don’t be. Turkish citizens are still happily tweeting away—albeit in slightly more complicated fashion.

Just another victory for the right to tweet without encroachment. Let’s just hope Mr. Erdogan doesn’t go after Snapchat next.

The next Council of Computing Majors (CCM) will be at Noon this Wednesday, March 26th, in Math/Psychology 008. One of our group members, Patrick McElvaney, will give a presentation about a new CCM project: using the Raspberry Pi and photo-receptors to analyze water in the Chesapeake watershed. His talk will provide an overview of the installation of sensing equipment, specific details on how the photo-receptors can differentiate between organic and inorganic compounds, and information on how other students can get involved.

The CCM is a student organization for undergraduate computer science and computer engineering majors as well as other students interested in computing. If you are interested in starting your own project, please come and speak with any of the officers after the meeting.
