Horton and Harp bring the Chesapeake Bay to life

<Tagline>Packed house at AOK Library is educated and entertained</Tagline>

Horton and Harp bring the Chesapeake Bay to life for packed house
by Sarah L. Hansen

Environmental journalists Tom Horton and David Harp shared their explorations by kayak of the Chesapeake Bay at UMBC's Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery on March 4, 2014. Their talk, "The Living Edge: Delights and Dilemmas of the Chesapeake Bay" drew a standing-room-only crowd. As Harp’s photos of the Chesapeake Bay and its inhabitants graced a large screen, the duo regaled the audience with scientific facts, cultural insights, and lighthearted banter.

On their first joint assignment in the early 1980s, Harp knew he’d found Horton’s desk when he saw green high-top sneakers covered with muck. Since then, they’ve been traipsing through the bay and its tributaries, taking great pictures and telling important stories – and occasionally ignoring “NO TRESPASSING” signs.

“We figured out rather quickly that as long as we delivered the goods, nobody really cared how long we were out there,” said Harp. But boy, do they deliver. Along the 11,000 miles of the bay and all its branches they’ve explored “the edge,” where land meets water, saltwater meets fresh, and wildland meets human development.

They’ve explored the crabbing and oyster industries and reported on new regulations and restoration efforts. They’ve seen the rise and fall of DDT, its effects on seabirds such as pelicans and osprey, and thankfully, the magnificent birds’ recovery. In fact, Horton said, the Chesapeake Bay now has the largest breeding population of osprey in the world. They’ve explored bald cypress forests (unusual trees that can tolerate salinity and swampy surroundings), witnessed migrant monarch butterflies feasting on goldenrod, and kayaked for days on end.

Horton has even tasted spadderdock roots, a winter food source for Native Americans that lived on the bay. “I had my students cook some up. You’d have to be pretty hungry…” he said, grimacing at the memory.

The team has also documented erosion that washed away small islands like Holland Island. When humans try to reconstruct these islands, we have to ask ourselves what species we want to target. Horton commented, “You get into playing God – what animals should we build it for?”

Restoration of Poplar Island is underway. The project is creating much-needed habitat for diamondback terrapins, terns, and many other critters. Unfortunately, great horned owls from nearby Coaches Island are snacking on the terns. To protect the terns, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed a pair of the owls. The tern population increased, but the owls may have been replaced by others. “How long can you shoot a beautiful predator? Hopefully not forever,” said Horton.

Horton and Harp also shared stories about people they’ve met, like Charlotte. She's been picking crabs at J.M. Clayton Company in Cambridge, MD for 64 years. She started at age 8. Before that, she sat in a box under the table while her mother picked. She’s thinking about retiring. Why? There are so many Spanish speakers picking crabs these days that there’s hardly anybody she can talk to.

Horton and Harp have written about and photographed one of the region’s, and the world’s, great estuarine treasures by shadowing crabbers, learning about new oyster farming methods, promoting greater public access to the bay, and simply sharing its peace and beauty. But one big question still remains.

“Can we ever learn to live peaceably with nature?” asks Horton. “We’ll find the answer soonest near places like the bay,” he says. Let’s hope it’s one we all, from blue crab to bald eagle, can live with.

Atlantic City Update, High Tide Blurb, and Practice Today

8===)~~~,

Haha, I used a penis to address all of you. I'm really funny.

This message will cover most of the details for the weekend, a quick update for those attending High Tide, and an update on our weekly practice schedule.

Practice Update

We have become fortunate enough to be granted access to the UMBC turf for the remainder of the semester. This may not seem like a huge deal, but it's a huge deal. Not only that, but we've been given access to the field Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 as well. This means we'll be hosting a drills/conditioning practice on Tuesday nights from now on. If you want to get in your weekly conditioning that you've all been staying up to date on, this is the time to do it.

Also, if you haven't heard already. We're holding practice today on Erickson field. See you bad boyz soon.

High Tide Blurb

For those attending High Tide, we're having a meeting to discuss everything on Monday night at 7PM in Math/Psych 104. If you can't be there, text me please. Thanks.

Atlantic City Tournament Deets

Drivers: Clarkson, Zach, Jason, Thomas, Jerry

Clarification: Will Albert may be able to go on Sunday which would mean the Saturday night crew would drive down with him and Jerry's car is not necessary. Otherwise, Thomas' car will be used by them and Jerry would need to drive.

Weather: http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/Atlantic+City+NJ+USNJ0015:1:US
