One of the most popular features we produce at MIT Technology Review depends on extensive input from the public. It’s our annual report on 35 important innovators under the age of 35. Anyone can nominate a candidate. In fact, that’s where some of our best suggestions originate. So please nominate anyone who is doing original and inspiring work in energy, computing and the Web, communications, materials, or biomedicine. (Feel free to nominate yourself.) We’re seeking a diverse group, and not only in terms of gender and geography: we like to highlight academic researchers and people in big companies, startups, VC firms, nonprofits, any kind of organization at all.

On-Campus Interviews (OCI)

Did you know that UMBC offers the opportunity to interview with employers for full-time, career-related positions right here on campus?

 For a list of companies and the dates they are coming to campus you can check out the OCI calendar on our website, or log into UMBCworks where you can search for positions and apply directly.

After applying via UMBCworks, the employer selects who they want to interview, and those students are notified via email and will be able to select an interview time.

Apply now for an interview this semester with Enterprise Holdings, Rockwell Collins/ARINC, Maxim Healthcare Services, and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (to name a few).

                                  Informational Interviews

Are you in the process of choosing an academic major, making career choices, changing careers, or beginning a job hunt? Informational interviews may help you explore your options.

Informational interviewing provides the opportunity to gain current information from professionals in the field.  Informational interviews help you gain valuable information for job hunting and career planning, learn about a particular organization, and network and establish contacts.

How are informational interviews different from other types of interviews? Informational interviews are meant to help you obtain information, not ask for a position.

To prepare for an informational interview: know your own skills, interests, values, and how they relate to the career field represented by the person you will be interviewing. Read about the career area and the organization. Know exactly what kind of information you want by having a list of questions in mind (http://careers.umbc.edu/skills/network/infoint_questions.pdf)

Two animation works by Kelley Bell, assistant professor of graphic design, have recently been selected for display in Occam’s Razor: Art, Science and Aesthetics, at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts, and the Ontario Science Center’s !dea Gallery. Her pieces, The Kuber-Ross Device, and Eureka! will be presented alongside other works that narrow the cultural divide between art and science. Works selected for Occam’s Razor were chosen because of the way they highlight similarities in practice amongst scientists and artists.

Occam’s Razor: Art, Science and Aesthetics will open Wednesday, April 2, and continues through April 20.

Bell’s artwork will also be featured in the Northern Spark projection arts festival this June in Minneapolis. Learn more at the Northern Spark website.

Tomiko Shine ’14, anthropology, won first place in the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) undergraduate paper competition for her paper, “The Lens of Blackness: An Anthro-Political Perspective.”

When Tomiko moved to Baltimore, she noticed through her work with youth and mothers in Baltimore City that many of their fathers or husbands were incarcerated. After seeing the impact that incarceration had on black families and communities, Tomiko responded by becoming a court advocate and attended court with youth who had charges that carried jail time. “I wanted to understand this phenomenon of the impact of incarceration on black family and community,” she said.

In order to more fully understand this phenomenon, Tomiko conducted research with Sarah Chard, associate professor and associate chair of sociology and anthropology, and submitted her paper which concluded that high rates of incarceration impact the American social society, economy, education and labor system.

Tomiko plans to graduate from UMBC in the spring and would like to continue her anthropological studies in graduate school with a combined degree in public policy. She will attend the NCBS Conference Student Luncheon on Friday, March 7 to present her paper. Congratulations, Tomiko!
