CWIT Spring Into Leadership Planning Committee

<Tagline>Help plan this event, celebrating women in IT & engineering!</Tagline>

The annual CWIT Spring Into Leadership event is just over a
month away and we could use the help of a few Affiliates in the rest of
the planning. We will have a planning committee meeting from 12-12:50pm on Wednesday, March 12 (one week from today) in ITE 456.

We will also have a planning committee on Wednesday, March 26, from 12-12:50pm in ITE 456. If we need one more meeting after that, we will schedule it later.

In
these meetings, we will decide on how the networking piece of the event
should work, whether you think we should have a theme to the event this
year, what kinds of topics you think our keynote speaker should address
in her talk, ideas for an interactive piece we could work with the
speaker to incorporate in her talk, etc.

Even if you can only make one of the two scheduled dates, we
encourage you to attend the one you can make; everyone's input will be
valuable in making these decisions for the event.

Spring Into Leadership will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. You may RSVP at the website attached to this post to attend this event. For the planning committee meetings, no RSVP is necessary.

Potomac – UMBC Rapid Fabrication of Microfluidic Devices

Potomac – UMBC Collaboration to develop novel manufacturing techniques for microfluidic devices shows early, promising results.

Thermistor heating of the underside of a microfluidic structure (cross-section view). The electrical interconnect layer carries electrical connections to the thermistors and provides optimized thermal insulation from the heat sink.

Microfluidics is the science of designing, manufacturing, and developing devices and processes that deal with extremely small volumes of fluid for many types of applications, including sensing, drug discovery, alternative energy, and point-of-care diagnostics. Testing and analysis processes, that would normally be performed in a lab, have now been miniaturized and can be conducted on a single chip in order to enhance efficiency and mobility, as well as, reducing sample and reagent volumes. Recently, Potomac and its partners at UMBC and Potomac Mesosystems have embarked on several projects to develop novel microfluidic manufacturing technologies.

Surface mount thermistors for heating and sensing

In our first study, we’re investigating the use of submillimeter thermistors as combined heat sources and temperature sensors. We’re using the smallest negative temperature coefficient thermistors with a footprint of 0.3 mm x 0.6 mm (0201 size).

When thermistors are used for temperature sensing, great care is normally taken to avoid self heating of the thermistors by the sensing current. In our case, we’re purposely self-heating the thermistor and monitoring its resistance to infer its temperature.

Because of the complex heat flow patterns in a typical microfluidic structure, it is very helpful to use a 3D modeling program to estimate temperature distributions, required power input, cooling time constants and other important parameters. The sketches to the left show a cross-section of a simple thermistor heater layout and the results of a Comsol model of the corresponding temperature distribution. We are now constructing and modeling several single-thermistor configurations.

A “hot thermistor” flow sensor for microfluidics

A large variety of microfluidic flow sensors based on micromachined heaters and RTD’s have been reported in the literature. Hot wire flow sensors – the analog of hot wire anemometers — are among the simplest of these, since they can be fabricated with a single heater with a well-defined relationship between resistance and temperature. Implementation requires only a resistive heater fabricated from a very narrow and thin conductor that is placed near a microfluidic flow stream. The heater is positioned near a heated with a drive current, and its temperature isinfluenced by the cooling effect of the nearby fluid flow. Higher flow provides more cooling and lower heater temperatures. Calibration of temperature (i.e. resistance) vs. flow results in a simple flow monitor. Heater dimensions are typically such that fabrication is by photolithographic patterning of a metal film of submicron thickness. For good sensitivity, the heater should have a high thermal coefficient of resistivity.

We’ve recently shown that a small, surface-mount NTC thermistor can be substituted for the patterned thin metal film, with significant implications for reduction of process steps and costs associated with fabrication, and increased speed and simplicity of rapid prototyping of integrated flow sensors. The very high temperature coefficient of thermistors provides good flow sensitivity, and use of surface mount electronic assembly techniques simplify fabrication.

In work carried out in the Potomac laboratory, Amir Harandi, a Ph.D. student at UMBC, fabricated a hot thermistor flow sensor like that shown at the right. The microfluidic channel had a cross-section of 300 microns x 600 microns, and a 2Kohm NTC thermistor with a 0201 package size was used in the experiments. Experimental results are summarized below, and demonstrate the relatively large electrical output variation produced by flow rates between 0 and 50 ul/min.

DB Networks Partners With AMP Tech Solutions to Deliver Behavioral Analysis-Based Core IDS to Federal Market

SAN DIEGO, CA (Marketwired - Mar 4, 2014) - DB Networks, an innovator of behavioral analysis in database security, today announced it has partnered with AMP Tech Solutions (AMP Tech), which sells technology solutions to the Federal Government in affiliation with Alvarez & Associates, a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVO/SB). Through this partnership, DB Networks' IDS-6300 next-generation Core IDS will be offered through the NASA Solutions for Enterprise-Wide Procurement (SEWP) IV contract and is available to all government agencies for effective identification of advanced database attacks.

DB Networks' IDS-6300 Core IDS detects rogue SQL statements and operates passively and transparently as a physical or virtual appliance. It creates a unique model of how an application creates SQL statements to converse with the database and evaluates these statements against the model for proper behavior. Any rogue SQL statement, such as a SQL injection, causes the system to alarm and show an attack in real-time. This behavioral learning and model creation is automated, making it much faster and more accurate than what is currently available through manually generating signatures or the tuning of signatures to suppress false alarms.

AMP Tech is a marketing and sales IT solutions company that solves big technology problems by delivering economical, leading-edge technologies quickly and economically to government agencies.

"Though our partnership with AMP Tech, we can more easily reach government customers and help them with their security and compliance requirements through continuous core monitoring and behavioral analysis of network activity," said Brett Helm, CEO of DB Networks. "Our technology and products along with their systems integration expertise provide the opportunity to address advanced database security threats at the government agencies, where cyber security and compliance is of critical importance."

"DB Networks behavioral analysis technology has been field proven as a highly effective approach for database security and is truly unique in the industry," said Kirk Hanson, President of AMP Tech Solutions. "We're excited to offer DB Networks' Core IDS to our government customers, so they can mitigate risk and finally identify advanced database attacks in real-time."
