Alums in the News

We are proud of our alums and their constant achievements. Three of UMBC’s alums, in particular, have made it in the news and we thought you should know! Read about Sean Scheidt, Zofie Lang, Terry Nolan and their stories of success.

Sean Scheidt ‘05, visual arts photography, is featured on BuzzFeed for his before-and-after photographs of burlesque performers. Take a look at his ability to create and capture these artful transformations, or as BuzzFeed’s Matthew Tucker puts it, his ability to challenge “preconceptions of the performance art.”

More of Scheidt’s intriguing photography can be found on his site, seanscheidt.com.

Zofie Lang ‘02, psychology and sociology, will be presenting her 12-piece assemblage at BlackRock Center for the Arts’ show, Collective: a visual narrative of tale, time, and thought. She is proud to be presenting alongside artists Renee Lachman and Henrik Sundqvist. Lang will use digital photography, found objects and photo montage to explore folklore, literary tales and their meanings. Details about the show can be found on BlackRock Center for the Arts’ site.

Lang’s personal site, zofielangfairytales.com, also provides a sneak peek of some of the pieces she will be presenting at the exhibit.

President of the Arbutus Business and Professional Association, attorney Terry Nolan ‘82, political science, is committed to his job and prides himself on giving back to and growing his local community – it’s where his heart is, explains his wife, Patti Sue Nolan. Nolan works out of his law office in Arbutus and has made a name for himself amongst the town in which he lives. Read more about Nolan’s success in The Baltimore Sun’s article.

Website being replaced by group

<Tagline>This is the future! ... for now</Tagline>

Hi everybody!

We have been informed that our website was grossly out of date. And also not actually communicating relavent information anymore. Since we were unable to make changes to the website, UMBC suggested, and I agreed to remove our website.

Instead of the website, we will use this group. The group is fully accessible to students, alumni, and guests. This switch will allow members and casual participants to keep up with club news, discuss happenings in the community (Did you guys hear about Baltimore's plans for a Japanese Culture Festival!?!?), and also share experiences. It will not replace the email list as a means of direct communication. For nominations, etc, email is the best way to contact us.

I am very excited about this group. It will make our club more visible on campus, attracting new, and returning members. Revitalizing our membership will ensure that UAS will continue to be a UMBC tradition for another 20 years.

Please let us know what you guys think about this! Will it make it easier to share anime suggestions for B.Y.O.A.? How about coordinate marathon committees? Or theme nights? I want to know.

I'll see you all tomorrow!

Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Git’s features (learning ease, tiny footprint and fast performance, services like GitHub) have caused many to choose it over older alternatives like Subversion and CVS. If you want to find out how you can use Git, come the LUG Git tutorial this Wednesday.

The UMBC Linux Users Group will sponsor a lecture and workshop on Git led by Alexander Bauer from Noon to 1:00pm on Wednesday, February 26 in the ITE 240 computer laboratory at UMBC. “Git” is a term that has become familiar to a great many of us in the technical world, whether as users or as developers. With the rise of such services as GitHub and BitBucket, and an increasing number of open source projects being hosted as Git repositories, yet many people are still unfamiliar with its use and potential use cases. During the workshop you can use your own laptop or a lab computer.
