<Title>Phenomena in Need of Names</Title>

    <span>1. That moment of hesitation and uncertainty after you hear a greeting or compliment but didn't see the person say it, and so can’t be sure whether it was directed at you.</span><br><span><br></span>
    </div>
    <div>
    <span>2. The impulse of each generation to invent or appropriate its own words for “great!” (cool, rad, hot, tight, on point, etc.).</span><br><span><br></span>
    </div>
    <div>
    <span>3. The occasional, usually brief interval in which all of the inanimate objects you encounter (your car keys, hairbrush, sandwich) slip out of your hands, malfunction, break, get in your way, or otherwise hinder your progress.</span><br><span><br></span><span>4. The turning point when you decide to pursue the major and career path you really want, rather than those you had felt pressured or obligated to pursue.</span><br><span><br></span><span>5. The point in the semester at which it's just completely impossible not to have arrived at a long break, and yet weeks remain.</span><br><span><br></span><span>6. The period after you've had a difficult experience that has probably made you stronger and wiser but before you have had an opportunity to apply your new strength and wisdom (and so prove to yourself that they exist).</span><br><span><br></span><span>7. Moments that will, in retrospect, turn out to be the beginnings of stories that define you (e.g., meeting your future significant other for the first time), but which, when they occur, seem perfectly ordinary.</span><br><span><br></span>

<Title>Because Sometimes, McCafe Just Doesn&#8217;t Cut It</Title>

    <p>The pressures of covering the Olympics  are probably too immense for us mere mortals to imagine. So no one would fault the NBC broadcast army currently in Sochi, Russia for wanting to indulge in the caffeinated drinks of their choice, right?</p>
    <p>Too bad Starbucks is banned from the games.  As a non-sponsor, the coffee was denied a place at Olympic locales. So NBC has had to be a little creative in getting their employees their ideal coffee brand…</p>
    <p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304434104579383363676015636" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">As in, creating </a><a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304434104579383363676015636" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">a hidden enclave in their Sochi facility</a>, then sneaking several 15-man crack teams of baristas to staff the coffee cave .</p>
    <p>Fortunately, neither McDonalds nor Coca-Cola, the Winter Games’ official sponsors,<br> seem to mind the little indiscretion.  (That would have been a snow ball fight to see)</p>
    <p>Probably just as well…after all, if the NBC team is going to continue covering feats <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/news/winter-olympics-2014-united-states-bests-russia-in-hockey/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">such as this one</a>, it will need to be at its latte-filled best.</p>

    <p>Name? Address? Gender?</p>
    <p>The last question usually supplies two boxes. But now, that is changing.</p>
    <p><a href="http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2014-02-04/features/bs-md-transgender-hearing-20140204_1_transgender-people-discrimination-madaleno" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">As Annapolis considers new anti-discrimination legislation to protect transgendered people in Maryland</a>, Facebook recently <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Health/gender-conforming-youth-applaud-facebook-tool/story?id=22505300" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">embraced</a> non-traditional expressions of gender identity by adding more than 50 new options for users to classify their own gender.</p>
    <p>Whether you’re a traditionally masculine or feminine person unfamiliar with new terminology… or a non-conforming person looking for the right word to describe your specific gender identity, this <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/02/15/the-complete-glossary-of-facebook-s-51-gender-options.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">article from <em>The Daily Beast</em></a> explaining the meaning of each new Facebook gender category may be useful.</p>
    <p>Many of the terms overlap or describe similar identities, but the sheer number should allow for individual Facebook users to find the best possible descriptor for themselves.</p>
