Upcoming Workshop on Web Annotations: Footnotes, comments, bookmarks, and marginalia on the Web
W3C announced today a workshop on digital annotations for the Web, part of our ongoing effort on enhancing the Web experience.
Annotating is the act of creating associations between distinct pieces of information. Annotation is a ubiquitous activity online in many guises: comments on articles, footnotes, sticky notes, “hot spots” on images, timestamped notes on video or audio tracks, highlighted text passages in ebook readers, evocative pictures attached to song lyrics, quotes and links on social media, and even tagged bookmarks, are all forms of annotation. One of the most common and engaging Web activities for the average person is discussion of a document or piece of media.
Many projects and companies are now turning to annotations to solve a variety of issues with communication on the Web, and is of particular interest to the education, research, and digital publishing industries. To address these needs, W3C’s Web Annotations workshop will focus on identifying standardization priorities for chartering a potential Web Annotations Working Group, on such topics as:
- Robust anchoring to dynamic third-party documents
- Styling selections and annotations
- Data models
- Federation and syndication
- Web storage and management of annotations
- Client side APIs and methods for the implementation of annotation systems
- Practical experience with annotation systems
- Annotation of data
W3C membership is not required to participate. The event is open to all, but all participants are required to submit a position paper or statement of interest by 28 February 2014.

"The
mission of this Alternative Spring Break trip is to learn how to leave A
Better Impact and commit to sustainable living. Focusing on parks and
areas of recreation, we will experience the value of these nature spaces
for urban Baltimore City, suburban Baltimore County, and rural
Maryland. We will engage in manual labor to help park staff with
maintenance and preservation. As a service trip, we are to be humbled by
our activities and open to new perspectives.Throughout the week, we
will learn about native and invasive species, wildlife concerns within
the park, and the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding watershed. We will
reflect on and evaluate our daily habits to see where we can make more
environmentally friendly choices. Armed with this knowledge, we will
deepen our commitment to sustainable practices and environmental
stewardship. The week will wrap up with an EDIBLE hike!
So
often we talk about HUGE issues like energy, global warming, food
justice etc. These are super important issues that deserve lots of
attention, but I think the overwhelming problems out there makes it easy
to overlook immediate actions we can take to improve our communities.
Sometimes this is on a smaller scale, like understanding how we treat
our neighborhood affects the Bay, which in turn affects the wildlife and
tourism that is are trademarks of Baltimore. We want to encourage
simple stewardship to break problems into manageable solutions and
actions that can be incorporated into our lifestyle. This is about more
than just organizing our recyclables, it is about actively nourishing a
respect for our land and water and giving back to the people dedicated
to their maintenance."

Entrespace Open for use!
Come one, come all entrepreneurial students to your new home
I know it has been a long time in the making, but we are happy to announce that Entrespace is now officially open and ready for use.
For those that don't know about Entrespace, it is a space for UMBC students interested in entrepreneurial learning, collaborating, and networking.
While the space isn't completely ready, in the heart of entrepreneurship, we are launching it a little early to see how we will use it and how best we can improve. Of course, there are a few rules for it's use:
Rules:
- EVERY PERSON MUST SCAN THEIR RED CARD TO ENTER
- We need to show that the space is being used, otherwise we could loose it. Please don't hold the door open for people.
- KEEP THE SPACE NEAT & CLEAN
- You don't need/want us to clean up after you. We're all responsible enough to pick up after ourselves.
- STAY ON TASKish
- We built this space to work on entrepreneurial projects. This space is meant for that use, and while no one has issue with people hanging out there, don't turn it into the RLC.
- If you see people being crazy, ask them to leave. I know this is easier said than done, and no one wants to be that guy/gal, but this space is being given to us for a specific use by the college. If it isn't being used for that reason, it can be taken away.
Ok, now onto the good stuff.
Where to find it?
In the old theater building, also called the Academic Services Building. Walk in the door closest to the Commons Garage, walk down the hall past the theater entrance and turn left. Walk all the way down the hall, through a door, and you will see it at the end. Room 139.
It's easier than it sounds.
When is it open?
Monday - Friday 8 am - 11 pm.
What to Expect in the future?
The official opening of the space will be within the next month and will be a huge grand opening celebration. The date hasn't been confirmed, we'll let you know when it is.
Throughout this semester, in addition to the Entrepreneurial Speaker Series, we will be hosting some local movers and shakers to provide our community with training in specific areas and topics. This is where you come in. Feel free to let us know if there is a topic that you are interested in learning about or if you have people that would be interested in speaking. Obviously we will need more than one person interested to make it worth while.
I know that some of the entrepreneurial teachers will be having their office hours in Entrespace throughout the semester as well. If you don't know them all yet, I'd encourage you to do so.
