WebGL With Three.js: Shaders

3D graphics in the browser have been a topic of interest since its introduction. But if you were to create your apps using plain old WebGL, it would take ages. Recently, some really useful libraries have come available. Three.js is one of the most popular, and in this series I will show you how to make the best use of it, to create stunning 3D experiences for your users.

I do expect you to have a basic understanding of 3D space before you start reading this tutorial, as I won’t be explaining things like coordinates, vectors, etc.

A Word About Shaders

If you already know what shaders are, you may skip this step. Shaders are basically programs written in GLSL (Graphics Layer Scripting Language), that are executed on the GPU. This makes them extremely useful, as we can take some work from the CPU and put it on the GPU to increase performance. There are two kinds: vertex and fragment shaders. Vertex shaders are used to modify the structure of the object (move the vertices), and fragment shaders make changes to the pixels that are being drawn.

Step 1: Vertex Shader

We will start with the simpler one. This shader will modify the placement of the vectors in the mesh, resulting in moving faces. Insert this code into
<head>
of your app:

<script id="cubeVertexShader" type="x-shader/x-vertex">
    	uniform float time;
    	varying vec2 vUv;

    	void main() {
    		vUv = uv;
    		vec3 newPosition = position + normal * vec3(sin(time * 0.2) * 3.0);
    		gl_Position = projectionMatrix <i> modelViewMatrix </i> vec4(newPosition, 1.0);
    	}
    </script>

The
type
attribute of this script won’t be understood by the browser, so it will not get executed (we will pass its contents to the Three.js material later). In the first two lines we are defining two variables. The first one is uniform
float time
. Uniforms are passed to both vertex and fragment shaders. Next, there is varying
vec2 vUv
. Varyings are the interface between the vertex and the fragment shader.
time
will hold the time in milliseconds since the app was started, which we will use to calculate new positions of vertexes. In
vUv
we will store the UV (texture vector) of each vertex, so we can use it in the fragment shader.

Next, there is the
void main()
declaration. All shaders must have this function. In here we are passing the UV of the vertex to our
vUv
and calculating the vertex’s new position. Finally, we set the
gl_Position
, which in fact sets the position of the vertex. But also, we have to multiply the position calculated earlier by the
projectionMatrix
and
modelViewMatrix
, two matrices that Three.js supplies to us. This is necessary because if we don’t do this, the GPU will not consider the point from which we are looking at the vertex. Now let’s move to the fragment shader.

Step 2: Fragment Shader

Now this is the place where all the magic happens. Fragment shaders are responsible for all of those good looking games. The one we will use is pretty simple, so don’t expect to see a scene from Crysis 3 after using it. Insert the following code under your vertex shader:

<script id="cubeFragmentShader" type="x-shader/x-fragment">
    		uniform float time;
    		varying vec2 vUv;

    		void main() {
    			vec2 position = -1.0 + 2.0 * vUv;

    			float red = abs(sin(position.x * position.y + time / 5.0));
    			float green = abs(sin(position.x * position.y + time / 4.0));
    			float blue = abs(sin(position.x * position.y + time / 3.0 ));
    			gl_FragColor = vec4(red, green, blue, 1.0);
    		}
    	</script>

As you can see at the top of the shader, there are our two variables again. You have to keep in mind that all variables you use (except the ones from Three.js) must be defined in each shader they are used in.

In the
void main()
function, we are calculating the colors based on the time and UV of the fragment (fragment shaders operate on fragments, which are composed from vertices, so the values of
varying
variables are interpolated in the fragment shader). Feel free to mess with those numbers and functions (just remember that the color values must be positive).

Finally, we are setting the
gl_FragColor
variable which sets the fragment’s color.

If you open your browser now, nothing will change, because we have to change the material of the object so it uses shaders.

Step 3: THREE.ShaderMaterial

This special material is used whenever we need to use shaders. Let’s change the material of the object that we attached to our model in the previous part of this series. First, define the
uniforms
array which will be used to pass variables to the shaders:

var uniforms = {
    	time: { type: "f", value: 0 },
    	resolution: { type: "v2", value: new THREE.Vector2 },
    	texture: { type: "t", value: THREE.ImageUtils.loadTexture('./box.png') }
    };

Next, in the
loader.load
define the
item
‘s material and use it:

var itemMaterial = new THREE.ShaderMaterial({
    	uniforms: uniforms,
    	vertexShader: document.getElementById('cubeVertexShader').innerHTML,
    	fragmentShader: document.getElementById('cubeFragmentShader').innerHTML
    });
    item = new THREE.Mesh(new THREE.CubeGeometry(100, 10, 10), itemMaterial);

Now, if you open the browser, you should see that the red beam changed its colors:

But the colors are not changing, and the mesh is not animated either. To change that, we have to update the
time
variable in the shaders each time a frame is drawn. Go to the
render
function and add this line after the
clock.getDelta()
call:

uniforms.time.value += delta * 10;

Now if you open the browser, you should see a nicely animated and colorful object:

A Word About Performance

If we were to create such a texture effect using, for example, HTML5 Canvas, the process would take too much of the CPU’s cycles, resulting in lags. But all shaders are executed on the GPU, which is optimized for all operations on graphics and is focused only on them. Separating graphic and non-graphic calculations is the key to a good performing app.

If you want to create something real using WebGL, allow me to assure you, that you will have to move as much work as possible to the GPU, to make your application smooth and responsive.

Conclusion

As you can see, using Three.js allows us to create 3D graphics in the browser very easily, and the results are actually pretty good. But, they can be even better, take a look at these examples from Three.js’s site:

Hyperlapse

The TNT For Two

With enough time, a creative mind and Three.js, you can create amazing apps like those too. I will be more than happy to see your Three.js creations. Thanks for reading.

An Introduction to Source Maps

One of the easiest performance wins you can gain for your website is to combine and compress your JavaScript and CSS files. But what happens when you need to debug the code within those compressed files? It can be a nightmare. Fear not however, there is a solution on the horizon and it goes by the name of source maps.

A source map provides a way of mapping code within a compressed file back to it’s original position in a source file. This means that – with the help of a bit of software – you can easily debug your applications even after your assets have been optimized. The Chrome and Firefox developer tools both ship with built-in support for source maps.

In this blog post you’re going to learn how source maps work and take a look at how to generate them. We’re going to be focussing primarily on source maps for JavaScript code but the principles apply to CSS source maps too.

Note: Support for source maps is enabled by default in Firefox’s developer tools. You may need to enable support manually in Chrome. To do this, launch the Chrome dev tools and open the Settings pane (cog in the bottom right corner). In the General tab make sure that Enable JS source maps and Enable CSS source maps are both ticked.

How Source Maps Work

As the name suggests, a source map consists of a whole bunch of information that can be used to map the code within a compressed file back to it’s original source. You can specify a different source map for each of your compressed files.

You indicate to the browser that a source map is available by adding a special comment to the bottom of your optimised file.

//# sourceMappingURL=/path/to/script.js.map

This comment will usually be added by the program that was used to generate the source map. The developer tools will only load this file if support for source maps is enabled and the developer tools are open.

You can also specify a source map is available by sending the
X-SourceMap
HTTP header in the response for the compressed JavaScript file.

X-SourceMap: /path/to/script.js.map

The source map file contains a JSON object with information about the map itself and the original JavaScript files. Here is a simple example:

{
        version: 3,
        file: "script.js.map",
        sources: [
            "app.js",
            "content.js",
            "widget.js"
        ],
        sourceRoot: "/",
        names: ["slideUp", "slideDown", "save"],
        mappings: "AAA0B,kBAAhBA,QAAOC,SACjBD,OAAOC,OAAO..."
    }

Lets take a closer look at each of these properties.

version
– This property indicates which version of the source map spec the file adheres to.

file
– The name of the source map file.

sources
– An array of URLs for the original source files.

sourceRoot
– (optional) The URL which all of the files in the
sources
array will be resolved from.

names
– An array containing all of the variable and function names from your source files.

mappings
– A string of Base64 VLQs containing the actual code mappings. (This is where the magic happens.)

Generating Source Maps with UgilfyJS

UglifyJS is a popular command line utility that allows you to combine and compress JavaScript files. Version 2 supports a number of command line flags that help with generating source maps.

--source-map
– The output file for the source map.

--source-map-root
– (optional) This populates the
sourceRoot
property in the map file.

--source-map-url
– (optional) The path to the source map on your server. This will be used in the comment that is placed in the optimized file.
//# sourceMappingURL=/path/to/script.js.map

--in-source-map
– (optional) An input source map. This can be useful if you are compressing JavaScript files that have already been generated from source files elsewhere. Think JavaScript libraries.

--prefix
or
-p
– (optional) Removes
n
number of directories from the file paths that appear in the
sources
property. For example,
-p 3
would drop the first three directories from the file path, so
one/two/three/file.js
would become
file.js
. Using
-p relative
will make UglifyJS figure out the relative paths between the source map and the original files for you.

Here’s an example command that uses some of these command line flags.

uglifyjs [input files] -o script.min.js --source-map script.js.map --source-map-root http://example.com/js -c -m

Note: If you use the
grunt-contrib-uglify
plugin for Grunt, refer to the documentation for information on how to specify these options in your Gruntfile.

There are also a number of other utilities available that have support for generating source maps. A selection of these are listed below.

Closure

CoffeeScript Compiler

GruntJS Task for JSMin

Source Maps in Chrome Dev Tools

The Sources Tab in Chrome Dev Tools

If you have your source maps set up correctly, you should see each of the original JavaScript files listed in the file pane of the Sources tab.

Examining the HTML for your page will confirm that only the compressed JavaScript file is being referenced. The dev tools is loading the source map file for you and then fetching each of the original source files.

Try a Demo

Source Maps in the Firefox Developer Tools

The Debugger Tab in the Firefox Developer Tools

Firefox users can see the individual source files in the Debugger tab of the developer tools. Again the dev tools has identified that a source map is available and has then fetched each of the referenced source files.

Should you wish to view the compressed versions instead, click the cog icon in the top right corner of the tab and deselect Show original sources.

Try a Demo

Final Thoughts

Using source maps allows developers to maintain a straight-forward debugging environment while at the same time optimizing their sites for performance.

In this post you have learned how source maps work and seen how you can generate them using UglifyJS. If you ever ship websites with compressed assets (which you should), it’s really worth taking the time to integrate source map creation into your workflow.

As described in this article, the term "microaggression" refers to specific interactions between people of different races, cultures, or genders that, while not physically violent, are nonetheless aggressive and demeaning. They can present themselves in the form of both verbal and nonverbal exchanges, and are frequently not recognized as offensive in casual conversation. Despite the apparent innocence or good intentions of some of these questions/comments, it is important to recognize the implications of what you say to people and the effects your words can have (even if unintended).

What are your opinions of these young people's experiences? Have you ever heard things similar to these? If so, how did you react? Have you found yourself saying/asking these things, and perhaps seeing unforeseen consequences? Do you think these kinds of microaggressions are typical at UMBC? What do you think is the right way to handle them?

Please feel absolutely free to share your experiences in the comments, but remember to keep it respectful :-) Keep in mind that instances in which you identify ignorance should be teaching moments rather than opportunities to put someone down!

Global Game Jam 2014

UMBC is once again hosting the Global Gam Jam this January. It will run from 5pm Friday, January 24th to 5pm Sunday, January 26th, just before classes start. Once again, thanks to a generous donation by NextCentury, registration is free. Space is limited, so sign up now!

For anyone who hasn't participated, the global game jam is a 48 hour game development event with hundreds of host sites around the world. At 5pm local time, introduce the jam and announce this year's theme. Previous year's themes have ranged from a phrase ("as long as we're together there will always be problems") to a word ("extinction") to an image (ouroboros: a snake eating its tail), to a sound (the recording of a heartbeat). Participants brainstorm game ideas around the theme, form into teams, and spend the weekend building games that are designed to be both fun and express the theme.

The UMBC site is not restricted to just students. In previous years, we have had a mix of UMBC students, faculty, alumni, students from other schools, game development professionals, and just people with an interest in game development. More details at gaim.umbc.edu/global-game-jam. However, we are limited to just 40 participants, so sign up early if you want to come. If the UMBC site fills, other local(ish) sites include the Unviersity of Baltimore, American University, and George Mason University.
