<Title>UMBC: The Right Wavelength</Title>
<Body>

    <h2>The Right Wavelength</h2>
    <h3>UMBC professor Tim Brennan appointed chief economist of the FCC.</h3>
    <p>Public policy and economics professor Tim Brennan has had a distinguished career as an educator, researcher and expert on communications and media. Now, thanks to his scholarship and experience disentangling complex telecommunications issues, he has been called on to serve as chief economist for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).</p>
    <p>Brennan has been an economist with the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division and senior economist for the White House Council of Economic Advisors. He has also served as a staff consultant to the Federal Trade Commission, advised on competition law internationally, and received the Distinguished Service Award last year from the Public Utility Research Center.</p>
    <p>I am very pleased that Tim Brennan has agreed to join the Commission as our chief economist, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said in a news release. His long and distinguished consideration of regulation, competition, and monopoly issues will enable him to contribute immediately and materially to our work.</p>
    <p>Brennans research has focused on antitrust, copyright, telecommunications, media policy, electricity markets, and related fields. He is also a senior fellow with Resources for the Future, a nonprofit social science research organization that seeks to improve global policymaking on environmental and natural resource issues.</p>
    <p>As FCC chief economist, Brennan will work closely with Chairman Wheeler and will serve as an advisor and provide support for all FCC members and staff. I expect to learn a lot, and it is an honor, says Brennan.</p>
    <p>The FCC deals with a range of complex issues, including industry mergers, subsidy programs and technology transition. The Commission has a number of leading economists on staff, but has also brought in scholars from academia for several years to provide outside perspectives and essential advice on challenging issues. Previous chief economists include Steven Wildman from Michigan State University and Marius Schwartz from Georgetown University.</p>
    <p>Brennans background and experience will enable him to make significant contributions, and Chairman Wheeler says he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Commission.</p>
    <p>The chief economist position is housed in the Office of Strategic Planning at the FCC. Brennan will work full-time at the agency for at least seven months. </p>

    <p>The Web is awash in content. A recent Moz article reports that <a href="http://moz.com/blog/future-of-content-upcoming-trends-in-2014" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">92,000 new articles</a> are posted online <em>every day</em>. Companies are spending <a href="http://www.customcontentcouncil.com/news/nearly-44-billion-new-survey-shows-rise-content-marketing-budget" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">billions on content marketing</a> to enhance credibility, build brand awareness and, especially of late, improve SEO.</p>
    <p>Here is what Google has to say about content in its <a href="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">quality guidelines</a>:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <ul>
    <li>Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.</li>
    <li>Don’t deceive your users.</li>
    <li>Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you’d feel comfortable explaining what you’ve done to a website that competes with you, or to a Google employee. Another useful test is to ask, “Does this help my users? <strong>Would I do this if search engines didn’t exist?</strong>”</li>
    <li>Think about what makes your website unique, valuable, or engaging. Make your website stand out from others in your field.</li>
    </ul>
    </blockquote>
    <p>Google has always <em>tried</em> to reward great content with high rankings, but today, thanks to vast improvements in its algorithm, Google is better able to actually <em>do</em> it. Its content quality guidelines are perfectly aligned with what every writer and marketer should aspire to.</p>
    <h4>As A Designer, Why Should You Care About Content Quality?</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>Your brilliant designs will be wasted if they are filled with inferior content.</li>
    <li>By developing the ability to evaluate content quality, you are able to provide constructive, difference-making input to other members of the creative team, increasing your value as a designer.</li>
    <li>If you are in a project management role, you must know what needs to be fixed, improved and enhanced in the deliverable’s content.</li>
    <li>Unless the content meets a high standard of quality, the finished product will undermine rather than enhance credibility, diminish rather than build brand awareness, and damage rather than improve search engine visibility.</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Defining “quality content” is difficult. <strong>A useful approach is to look at the editing process</strong>, because editing is where content theory is translated into cold hard facts. You could argue forever with clients about what constitutes quality content on a theoretical level. But when you break down quality into its specific editorial components, theoretical arguments evaporate.</p>
    <p>A sound editing process <em>forces</em> quality into content, no matter how ill-conceived or weakly written the content was in the beginning, assuming it was properly conceived and at least decently written to begin with.</p>
    <p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47691521@N07/5496629643/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="" src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/mistakes-made-lessons-learned.jpg" width="500" height="281" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a><br>
    <em>The editing process is more important than most think. (Image credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47691521@N07/5496629643/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">opensourceway</a>)</em></p>
    <p>This article examines several aspects of content editing. By reading it, you will learn:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>how the editing process works for most forms of online business content, including website pages, infographics, landing pages, brochures, white papers and slide presentations;</li>
    <li>what “big picture” issues and technical editing details to get right before publishing;</li>
    <li>the different types of editing help you need, and where to find authoritative online resources for DIY editing.</li>
    </ul>
    <h3>Five Types Of Content Editing</h3>
    <p>There are various formulas for breaking down editing tasks. For business content, it helps to think about editing as having five specialties.</p>
    <h4>1. Substantive Editing</h4>
    <p>Substantive editors are mainly concerned with overall cohesion, clarity, accuracy and effectiveness. They look for incomplete or faulty arguments, unsupported assertions, inconsistencies or gaps in the logical flow of the content, and faithfulness to the assignment’s strategic goals.</p>
    <h4>2. Copyediting</h4>
    <p>Copyeditors are mainly concerned with style. Are sentences clear and concise? Is the tone consistent? Are the right words being used? Is the text free of jargon and obscure references? Does the copy adhere to rules of grammar, punctuation and style?</p>
    <h4>3. Fact-Checking</h4>
    <p>Fact-checkers are mainly concerned with informational accuracy. They make sure statistics and other quantitative information are stated fully and correctly. Fact-checking is often a research task, but in business writing, it also comes into play at the editing stage — with vitally important impact, as we will see in a moment.</p>
    <h4>4. SEO</h4>
    <p>SEO editing ensures that on-page content conforms to SEO best practices and follows the campaign’s on-page guidelines. SEO editing is typically done by a client’s internal or external SEO resource. The more the SEO resource is plugged into the creative process, the less artificial and stilted the optimized content will be.</p>
    <h4>5. Proofreading</h4>
    <p>Proofreaders are mainly concerned with technical precision. Different standards apply to different types of content; a list of authoritative editing resources appears at the end of this article.</p>
    <p><a href="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/copyediting-screenshot-opt.png" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/copyediting-screenshot-500px-opt.png" width="500" height="178" alt="" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a><br><em>Editing done here by Johanna Shapiro (<a href="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/copyediting-screenshot-opt.png" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">View larger version</a>)</em></p>
    <p>If all of these editing tasks are done well, the final product will have the level of quality that readers and search engines desire. In terms of workflow, the editing process follows the order noted above, starting with substantive editing and ending with proofreading. However, as you might imagine, editing is not always linear; documents usually go back and forth between editors and writers as issues are fixed.</p>
    <h3>Editing Process FAQs</h3>
    <p>Effective editing is not only a matter of knowing what to do; it also requires an understanding of how to manage workflow and communication. Addressing these FAQs at the outset of your next project will help lay the groundwork for not only a better editing process, but a more enjoyable one.</p>
    <h4>Do I Need to Hire Five Editors?</h4>
    <p>No. A talented editor can cover a lot of the work at an acceptable level for most business content. That being said, the substantive editor must be familiar with the product, industry and audience in question, since the effectiveness of the content hinges on understanding the audience’s mindset and needs. The SEO editor must, of course, know SEO inside and out.</p>
    <h4>How Can I Get Copy Approved More Quickly?</h4>
    <p>Too much editing can be just as bad as not enough — some firms review and tweak for so long that the content is outdated by the time they approve it. The substantive editor or project manager is the best defence against perfectionism. They are best equipped to recognize when content should be deemed finished and to explain why to clients and team members.</p>
    <h4>How Much Editing Should the Writer Do?</h4>
    <p>I would love to hear from the Smashing Magazine community on this one, because it’s a thorny issue. Even writers with a firm grasp of grammar, style and technique submit substandard drafts due to time constraints or lack of familiarity with the subject matter. Competent writers learn as they go, reducing the editorial burden. For example, if a website project requires 60 pages of new content, have the writer start with 10 pages and then give them a careful copyedit and substantive edit. The edits may be numerous at this point, especially if the writer is new to the subject matter. If the next 10 pages come back vastly improved, then you’ll know the writer is catching on.</p>
    <h4>What If My Client Doesn’t Care About Editing?</h4>
    <p>Clients might not care about content editing as such, but they certainly care about public image, leads and orders. High-quality content impresses Google, which leads to more search engine visibility, which leads to more traffic and more business. High-quality content also reassures prospects, customers and stakeholders that the company is reliable and competent.</p>
    <h4>What’s the Best Way to Manage the Editing Process?</h4>
    <p>One person, generally the project manager or substantive editor, should coordinate all editorial functions and communication and make final decisions. Creative teams have many editing tools at their disposal, but using good old Track Changes and Comments in Word documents is perhaps the easiest way to start. A big challenge is preventing multiple versions of an in-process document from floating around; implement a clear procedure to avoid this. In my experience, the competence of the manager, rather than the tools, will determine the efficiency of the process.</p>
    <h3>Common Editing Issues</h3>
    <p>Let’s look at a few specific real-world issues that crop up in business Web copy for each type of editing. These particulars will give you an idea of what to look for if you are doing the editing or looking for an editor or managing the project.</p>
    <h4>Substantive Editing Issues</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>Here is an instructive, real-life example of how substantive editing produces clarity. In a recent article about writing for slide presentations, I wrote, “Slide presentations are great for a ‘peeling the onion’ narrative approach.” My editor commented, “What does that mean?” I pondered the issue and realized that I didn’t really know what I meant! After further reflection, I changed it to, “Slide presentations are ideal for storytelling.” Moral of the story: Substantive editors don’t always need to make sweeping changes. Often, just knowing what to look for helps to get it right.</li>
    <li>Keeping content on point prevents content creep. Substantive editors remind clients that a landing page need not be a thousand words long to prompt a conversion, nor a website a thousand pages deep to convey the firm’s value proposition.</li>
    <li>Substantive editors police all content to maintain consistency of brand messaging.</li>
    <li>The company’s branding and positioning strategy, the value proposition of the product and service being marketed and the nature of the target audience will determine the content’s style and tone. The substantive editor must be crystal clear on all of them.</li>
    <li>Building on the last point, a substantive editor — if time, budget and skill allow — injects personality into flat business content by adding storytelling narratives and stylistic flair that speak powerfully to the target audience.</li>
    </ul>
    <p><a href="http://www.duluthtrading.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/duluthtrading.png" width="500" height="452" alt="" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a><br><em>When it comes to substantive editing, <a href="http://www.duluthtrading.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Duluth Trading Company’s website</a> does this extraordinarily well.</em></p>
    <h4>Copyediting Issues</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>Headlines and headings should be descriptive and, in many cases, persuasive. Additionally, proper keyword placement in headlines and headings is important for SEO, so copyeditors and SEO editors must collaborate closely to balance these requirements.</li>
    <li>Active voice <em>usually</em> beats passive voice: “John saved $100” has more impact than “$100 was saved by John.” There are cases where the passive voice is preferred; a competent copyeditor makes the proper adjustments.</li>
    <li>Pronoun sensitivity leads writers to employ tortuous sentence construction to avoid “he” or “she” usage. Also, writers often shift from “it” to “they” when referring to a company. The copyeditor keeps pronoun use smooth and consistent.</li>
    <li>The wrong word or phrase can do worse than make a company look stupid; it can convey a message contrary to the one intended. My list of <a href="http://blog.straightnorth.com/confusing-business-words-and-phrases/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">commonly confused business words and phrases</a> is a handy reference.</li>
    <li>Overuse of exclamation points and all-caps conveys HYSTERIA!!!!</li>
    <li>Copyeditors convert long unformatted paragraphs into Web-optimized formats that employ bullet points, three- to five-line paragraphs, judicious use of bold text, etc. This is an area where designers provide valuable input.</li>
    </ul>
    <h4>Fact-Checking Issues</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>Sadly, the Web is a stewpot of misinformation, cooked up by marketers who feel pressured to publish. For example, a reader might come across a flashy infographic stating, “70% of Executives Use Tablets!” but, after checking the source, discovers that this “fact” is based on a survey of 25 anonymous respondents conducted by an obscure agency. Fact-checkers protect you and your client from losing credibility as a result of shaky statistics.</li>
    <li>Fact-checkers make sure that basic corporate information is correct. The company’s name, job titles and the spelling of employees’ names should always be accurate — yet often are not.</li>
    <li>Fact-checkers review product specifications to make sure they are up to date. The value of this thankless task is appreciated only after, say, a customer orders a $1.5 million printing press that turns out to be 10 feet too long for its production line when it arrives at the plant.</li>
    </ul>
    <h4>SEO Issues</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>Overusing keyword phrases on a page of content is counterproductive.</li>
    <li>Varying keyword phrases generally helps search engine visibility and makes content more readable and less “spammy” for humans.</li>
    <li>An SEO editor might opt to add links to the client’s other relevant content on a given page of Web content or a blog post. If done correctly, these related links build the authority of the client’s website.</li>
    </ul>
    <h4>Proofreading Issues</h4>
    <ul>
    <li>One space after a period is standard.</li>
    <li>Capitalization in headlines and headings should consistently follow a predetermined style.</li>
    <li>Font size and style should be consistent for text and headers from page to page.</li>
    </ul>
    <h3>In Conclusion, How Much Editing Is Enough?</h3>
    <p>Practical considerations such as deadlines and bandwidth, along with a clear understanding of the audience, will influence how thoroughly a piece of online content should be edited.</p>
    <h4>Proofreading</h4>
    <p>Generally speaking, readers do not hold blog posts to the same stylistic standard as, say, white papers. However, a blog post directed at an audience of scholars, physicians or attorneys <em>will</em> be held to a higher standard.</p>
    <h4>Fact-Checking</h4>
    <p>Visual content such as infographics and slide presentations, perhaps because of their formality, seem to carry more weight with readers than blog posts and website pages. For this reason, producers of visual content have a greater obligation to be sure of their facts, all else being equal. Firms undermine their credibility when they publish graphical material loaded with unsupported or misleading facts, whether intentionally or not.</p>
    <h4>SEO</h4>
    <p>If a firm has an organized SEO marketing program, then on-page SEO is crucial. If not, on-page optimization alone would probably not be enough to have any substantive impact on search visibility.</p>
    <h4>Copyediting and Substantive Editing</h4>
    <p>As for these, there is never any advantage to publishing vague, incoherent and uninspiring material. Some level of review is really a must. If resources are limited, and often they are, use this editing tactic: When in doubt, leave it out.</p>

<Title>How to Kickstart your HTML</Title>
<Body>
<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p><img alt="kickstart_thumbnail" src="http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/2014/01/kickstart_thumbnail.jpg" width="200" height="160" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">A primary goal of all developers is faster development, especially rapid bootstrapping. There are dozens of frameworks made available in the last couple of years that aim to have our prototypes up in minutes.</p> <p>Unfortunately many of those frameworks date quickly, as project requirements evolve, and need to be refreshed or replaced.</p> <p>If you’re looking for a recent framework that resolves the problems older solutions are now encountering, whilst still maximizing your workflow, you can’t go far wrong with <a href="http://www.99lime.com/elements/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">HTML Kickstart.</a></p> <h1>The Grid</h1> <p>The grid is one of the most important aspects of any framework, especially as a flexible grid determines how responsive a site can be.</p> <p>HTML Kickstart provides us with the option of a flexible grid, or a standard (non-flexible) grid — although it’s not clear when you’d use the latter given the increasing dominance of mobile devices.</p> <p>To create a flexible grid with two equal-sized columns, we’d use:</p> <pre>&lt;div class="grid flex"&gt;<br> &lt;div class="col_6 column"&gt;Content Here&lt;/div&gt;<br> &lt;div class="col_6 column"&gt;Content Here&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;/div&gt;</pre> <p>As you can see, all we’ve done is add some simple classes to three divs. If you’d prefer the non-flexible grid, all you need to do is remove the <em>flex</em> classname from the outer div.</p> <p>(Note that the flexible grid will stretch to the width of the entire screen, whereas the non-flexible grid has a maximum width of 1024px.)</p> <p>In addition to the based classes above, there are a number of helper classes that we can use, for example:</p> <ul> <li>
    <em>show-desktop</em> and <em>hide-desktop</em> with these classes you can decide if you want that grid to be visible on a desktop computer.</li> <li>
    <em>show-tablet</em> and <em>hide-tablet</em> the same concept applies here, but for tablet devices.</li> <li>
    <em>show-phone</em> and <em>hide-phone</em> once again, these classes dictate visibility, this time for smart phones.</li> </ul> <p>If we wanted to hide our two column grid on smartphones, for example, we’d use code like this:</p> <pre>&lt;div class="grid flex hide-phone"&gt;...&lt;/div&gt;</pre> <p> </p> <h1>Navigation</h1> <p>HTML Kickstart gives us three menu options: vertical left, vertical right and horizontal.</p> <p>The version you’ll want most often, is the horizontal menu. To code it, we just need unordered lists:</p> <pre>&lt;ul class="menu"&gt;<br> &lt;li class="current"&gt;&lt;a href=""&gt;Item 1&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href="#"&gt;Item 2&lt;/a&gt;<br> &lt;ul&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href="#"&gt;Sub Item&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href="#"&gt;Sub Item&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;/ul&gt;<br> &lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href="#"&gt;Item 3&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br>&lt;/ul&gt;</pre> <p>If you want a vertical left menu, just add <em>vertical</em> to the opening ul, and if you want a vertical right menu, add <em>vertical right</em>, like so:</p> <pre>&lt;ul class="menu vertical"&gt;...&lt;/ul&gt;<br>&lt;ul class="menu vertical right"&gt;...&lt;/ul&gt;</pre> <p>It really is that simple to code responsive menus with HTML Kickstart.</p> <p> </p> <h1>Default styles</h1> <p>HTML Kickstart gives you some great basic styles from the off. Obviously you’ll want to refine them for your project, but for rapid prototyping, they’re more than sufficient.</p> <p>When it comes to typography HTML KickStart uses <a href="http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2013/08/interview-steve-matteson/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Steve Matteson</a>’s <a href="http://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Arimo" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Arimo</a> font by default. You can see the full range of type settings <a href="http://www.99lime.com/elements/#type-example" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here.</a></p> <p>Button styles are always the center of a lot of attention in any framework, and HTML Kickstart comes with buttons in all shapes and sizes. You don’t even need to use classes for this, just create a button tag and the styles will automatically be applied.</p> <p>If you’d prefer the button styles to be applied to an anchor tag, you just need to add the <em>button</em> class to it:</p> <pre>&lt;a href="<a href="http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/">http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/</a>" class="button"&gt;WDD&lt;/a&gt;</pre> <p>We can also apply colors easily. Just add the name of the color you want:</p> <pre>&lt;button class="blue"&gt;Blue&lt;/button&gt;</pre> <p>There are also a number of different styles we can apply:</p> <pre>&lt;!-- Pill Style --&gt;<br>&lt;button class="pill"&gt;Pill&lt;/button&gt;<br>&lt;!-- Pop --&gt;<br>&lt;a class="button pop" href="#"&gt;Pop&lt;/a&gt;<br>&lt;!-- Inset Button--&gt;<br>&lt;button class="inset"&gt;Inset&lt;/button&gt;<br>&lt;!-- Square Button--&gt;<br>&lt;button class="square"&gt;Square&lt;/button&gt;</pre> <p>Finally, we also have the option of creating a button bar, with a syntax similar to the horizontal menu:</p> <pre>&lt;ul class="button-bar"&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=""&gt;New&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=""&gt;Upload File&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=""&gt;Delete&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br>&lt;/ul&gt;</pre> <p> </p> <h1>Images</h1> <p>HTML Kickstart helps improve UX by generating pop-ups for galleries and images for you. It’s a much better solution than opening a new window.</p> <p>To create a fully functional JavaScript-based pop-up gallery all we need is the following code:</p> <pre>&lt;div class="gallery"&gt;<br> &lt;a href="img/image1.jpg"&gt;<br> &lt;img src="img/thumb1.jpg" width="100" height="100" /&gt;<br> &lt;/a&gt;<br> &lt;a href="img/image2.png"&gt;<br> &lt;img src="img/thumb2.png" width="100" height="100" /&gt;<br> &lt;/a&gt;<br>&lt;/div&gt;</pre> <p>It’s simple to implement, and you didn’t need a single line of JavaScript.</p> <p>Images also have some great helper classes, such as <em>caption.</em> This class applied to an image shows the <em>title</em> of the image as a styled caption:</p> <pre>&lt;img class="caption" title="My Caption" src="img/image.png"/&gt;</pre> <p>We also have <em>align-right</em> and <em>align-left</em> classes that we can use to float images left and right. (HTML Kickstart will add a little margin so the images aren’t up against the text.)</p> <pre>&lt;img class="align-left" src="img/align.jpg"/&gt;</pre> <p>And of course, HTML Kickstart also provides us with simple slideshows. It uses <a href="http://bxslider.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BXSlider</a> slider to handle this.</p> <p>The code for a simple slider will look something like this:</p> <pre>&lt;ul class="slideshow"&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;img src="img/image1.png”/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;&lt;img src="img/image2.png”/&gt;&lt;/li&gt;<br> &lt;li&gt;<br> &lt;h3&gt;A Content Slider&lt;/h3&gt;<br> &lt;p&gt;This slider handles HTML content as well as images.&lt;/p&gt;<br> &lt;/li&gt;<br>&lt;/ul&gt;</pre> <p>The slider is touch-enabled for mobile devices, and once again, you didn’t need a single line of JavaScript.</p> <p> </p> <h1>Forms</h1> <p>The last thing I want to introduce you to is forms. Forms are vital to any framework, because they are one of the hardest things to style on a web page.</p> <p>HTML Kickstart maintains its simplicity when it comes to forms, and a vertical form can be created as simply as:</p> <pre>&lt;form class=”vertical”&gt;<br> &lt;label for="name"&gt;Name&lt;/label&gt;<br> &lt;input id="name" type="text" placeholder=”Your Name” /&gt;<br> &lt;label for="age"&gt;Age&lt;/label&gt;<br> &lt;select id="age"&gt;<br> &lt;option value="0"&gt;-- Choose --&lt;/option&gt;<br> &lt;option value="18"&gt;18&lt;/option&gt;<br> &lt;option value="19"&gt;19&lt;/option&gt;<br> &lt;option value="20"&gt;20&lt;/option&gt;<br> &lt;/select&gt;<br> &lt;textarea id="notes" placeholder="Some Notes"&gt;&lt;/textarea&gt;<br>&lt;/form&gt;</pre> <p>As you can see, I’ve hardly had to use any classes at all for this form. All I’ve done is add the class <em>vertical</em> at the top so that the form elements aren’t treated as inline.</p> <p>One of my favourite parts of HTML Kickstart are the simple error notices used with forms:</p> <pre>&lt;!-- Error --&gt;<br>&lt;div class="notice error"&gt;Error Notice &lt;a href="#close" class="icon-remove"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;!-- Warning --&gt;<br>&lt;div class="notice warning"&gt;Warning Notice &lt;a href="#close" class="icon-remove"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;!-- Success --&gt;<br>&lt;div class="notice success"&gt;Success Notice &lt;a href="#close" class="icon-remove"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</pre> <p> </p> <h1>Conclusion</h1> <p>There are tons of options that come with HTML Kickstart, we’ve really only scratched the surface; there’s a huge set of icons, tooltips and even tabs.</p> <p>The real strength of HTML Kickstart is the simplicity of its code. The lack of extraneous divs and classes makes it a great time-saver, less code means less errors. If you’re looking to get started coding your own HTML from scratch, or if you’re looking for a simple framework to rapidly prototype a design HTML Kickstart is a great option.</p> <p> </p> <p><em><strong>Have you used HTML Kickstart? Do you prefer a different framework? Let us know in the comments.</strong></em></p> <p><br><br> </p>

<Title>Bono Meets Bob Marley in South Sudan</Title>
<Body>
<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p><a href="http://usdemocrazy.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lam3.gif" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="" src="http://usdemocrazy.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lam3.gif" width="600" height="400" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a></p>
    <p>It is often hard to imagine a ray of light emerging from the deep darkness of a bloody war…</p>
    <p>But in dismal and violent South Sudan, the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/hope-amid-despair-in-south-sudan/2014/01/03/4a6a3878-73c4-11e3-8def-a33011492df2_story.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Washington Post</a> tells us there’s an amazing story of hope beaming out.</p>
    <p>His name is Lam Tungwar.</p>
    <p>Dubbed as “South Sudan’s homespun blend of Bono and Bob Marley,” Tungwar is a bonafide star in East Africa.</p>
    <p>The former child soldier fled the South Sudanese military and walked to refuge in Kenya at age nine. From there, he got an education and started making music.</p>
    <p>He says from his <a href="http://www.lamtungwar.com/Site/Home.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">website</a>:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <p>“I have been delivering positive messages through concerts, meetings, conferences, and campaigns and in various activities representing the voices of young people. I am working for the liberation of youth and fight for them in this tough world. My second album, Call the President, is talking a lot about the changes I want to see in our communities all over the world.”</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p>Tungwar has attracted many young fans with <a href="http://www.lamtungwar.com/Site/Tracks_%26_Videos.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">his music</a>, which combines positive lyrics with catchy hooks and danceable beats.</p>
    <p>Unfortunately his songs, with titles like “Drop the Guns,” “Love,” and “Call the President,” are more of a vision for the future than a reality in today’s South Sudan. </p>
    <p>The turn for the worse in the country has affected Tungwar personally – his three brothers were killed just last month in the conflict. Still, he is hopeful for the future, despite the tremendous amount of suffering taking place.</p>
    <p>Tungwar describes it like this:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <p>“When a baby is born, they have diseases and are very sick, and their mother thinks they are going to die, but somehow they make it.”</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p>We hope Tungwar’s music will be a part of the medicine that heals South Sudan. Keep fighting with love, Lam! Do it until they “Drop the Guns.”</p>

<Title>This is for Your Body&#8230;</Title>
<Body>
<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p><a href="http://usdemocrazy.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/mediterranean-diet-221.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="" src="http://usdemocrazy.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/mediterranean-diet-221.jpg" width="500" height="437" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a></p>
    <p>No matter what your personal goals are, its safe to say that we can all agree on a few things:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>We want to be healthy and fit</li>
    <li>We want to feel good </li>
    <li>We want to live long</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Unfortunately, in the world of fad diets, Hollywood, and false advertising, its tough to know exactly how to achieve these goals. </p>
    <p>We are often fed information that is just plain <em>wrong.</em> </p>
    <p>Here are a few debunked nutrition myths to help you live a healthier and happier life. </p>
    <p><strong>1. Carbs are bad and should be cut out of the diet</strong></p>
    <p>Nope. Carbohydrates are our bodies’ <a href="http://www.mckinley.illinois.edu/handouts/macronutrients.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">main source of energy</a>. They provide the necessary glucose for our brain and muscles to function as well as a regulation of the digestive system. Dieters who are mislead to believe that carbohydrates need to be eliminated are left feeling lethargic and tired as well as constipated. </p>
    <p><strong>2. Drinking milk is essential for strong bones</strong></p>
    <p>You know that whole Got Milk campaign? The dairy farmer-funded campaign has mislead many to believe that milk is the best source of calcium and vitamin D. This is not the case. <a href="http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/guide/calcium-vitamin-d-foods" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Vegetables like kale and spinach are better sources.</a></p>
    <p><strong>3. Skipping meals will lead to weight loss</strong></p>
    <p>Many people skip meals hoping that this form of restriction will lead to weight loss. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/3-reasons-skipping-meals-is-unhealthy.html#b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">they actually end up doing the opposite.</a> Skipping meals causes a drop in  blood sugar levels that leads to fatigue and inadequate nutrition. In addition, metabolism is slowed down leading to increased fat storage. </p>
    <p><strong>4. Calories are evil </strong></p>
    <p>One of the most common mistakes made when dieting is <a href="http://sophieologie.me/2013/09/26/1200-calories/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">obsessing over calorie intake.</a> Calories are not indicative of the health of foods. In fact, there are endless foods that may be high in caloric content but their nutritional value makes them important, if not essential, to the diet. </p>
    <p><strong>5. Weight is indicative of health </strong></p>
    <p><a href="http://www.livestrong.com/article/438693-a-pound-of-fat-vs-a-pound-of-muscle/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Muscle is denser than fat.</a> People who have large numbers on the scale may not necessarily be overweight or unhealthy. </p>
    <p><strong>6. Organic food is always best </strong></p>
    <p>Blindly buying solely organic  is simply a waste of money. <a href="http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=52420" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Permeable produce such as berries soak up pesticides easily and rapidly and are worth buying organic.</a> Non-permeable produce is not nutritionally worth it. </p>
    <p><strong>In summary:</strong> Healthy and nutritious diets are not defined by restriction or fixation on certain foods or practices. By treating your body right you will live a healthier, happier, and longer life. </p>

<Title>Roy Meyers, Political Science, on WYPR&#8217;s Maryland Morning</Title>
<Body>
<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p>Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is sending his final budget to the General Assembly this week. Political science professor Roy Meyers was a guest on WYPR’s <em>Maryland Morning </em>on January 13th and analyzed what the budget will look like and what Gov. O’Malley’s priorities will be.</p>
    <p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/roy-meyers-umbc.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="Roy Meyers (UMBC)" src="/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/roy-meyers-umbc.jpg" width="270" height="180" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a></p>
    <p>“I think he’s probably going to stay the course. He’s going to claim credit for the innovations he’s made over the previous years and also try to promote additional job creation,” Meyers said.</p>
    <p>He described potential ways Gov. O’Malley could create jobs with the budget including investments in infrastructure and education.</p>
    <p>“The long term strategy of the administration is to try to build human capital and make investments in infrastructure. So for example, the increase in the gas tax last year has been creating jobs and it will continue to create jobs over the next couple of years,” Meyers added.</p>
    <p>You can listen to the interview on <em>Maryland Morning</em> in its entirety <a href="http://programs.wypr.org/podcast/what-will-next-state-budget-look" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>.</p>

<Title>Constantine Vaporis, Asian Studies, in Education About Asia</Title>
<Body>
<![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p>Asian studies program director Constantine Vaporis was recently interviewed in <em>Education About Asia </em>as part of an interview series with recipients of the AAS Franklin Buchanan Prize. Vaporis was the 2013 award winner for his book <em>Voices of Early Modern Japan: Contemporary Accounts of Daily Life During the Age of</em> <em>Shoguns</em>.</p>
    <p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/vaporis.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="vaporis" src="/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/vaporis.jpg" width="300" height="199" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a></p>
    <p><em>Education About Asia </em>praised Vaporis for “producing a superb pedagogical tool” and interviewed him about his extensive scholarship on Tokugawa Japan and research methods for his book.</p>
    <p>In addition to the interview, the magazine published a review of <em>Voices of Early Modern Japan</em>.  The reviewer, Kathleen Krauth, writes:</p>
    <blockquote><p>[The book] is a remarkable work in that it not only offers educators many topics and themes from the early modern era of Japan but also emphasizes how to read and understand a primary document. Because Vaporis’s text successfully presents content and skills, it serves as a model of how to meet the many demands of our jobs. High school and postsecondary teachers of Japan and Asia will find this book valuable for their teaching.</p></blockquote>
    <p>The interview and book review appeared in Volume 18, Number 3 winter edition of the magazine.</p>
