First there were complaints over Apple’s skeuomorphic icons and their inherent cheesiness. Then there were objections to Apple’s redesigned iO7 — once again, for cheesiness. Now, a group of animation students from Kingston University have created a 3D model village of sorts, which pictures Apple apps coming to life in all of their skeuomorphic glory.

While Apple has learned that you can’t please all of the people all of the time, this newly produced video, titled Skew, scores its share of pleasing points. Using models built from fiberboard, card stock and paper, everything from the alarm clock to the newsstand app comes to kitschy life. Their video recalls to mind that real life isn’t slick or glitch-free, and that’s okay. Skeuomorphism may have, in large part, seen its day; but that doesn’t mean realism has to fall by the wayside. In fact, if this clever video is any indication, we haven’t seen the last of it yet.

The CSS Working Group and the SVG Working Group have published a Last Call Working Draft of Compositing and Blending Level 1. Compositing describes how shapes of different elements are combined into a single image. Previous versions of SVG and CSS used Simple Alpha Compositing. In this model, each element is rendered into its own buffer and is then merged with its backdrop using the Porter Duff source-over operator. This specification defines a new compositing model that expands upon the Simple Alpha Compositing model by offering additional Porter Duff compositing operators; advanced blending modes which allow control of how colors mix in the areas where shapes overlap; and compositing groups. In addition, this specification defines CSS properties for blending and group isolation, and defines the ‘globalcompositeoperation’ as specified in HTML Canvas 2D Context, Level 2. Since President Obama’s ascent into Presidency in 2008 the American public has been speculating Hilary Clinton’s next move.

On Monday, January 6, Politico revealed that Clinton -though months away from a decision- appears to be preparing for a 2016 Presidential Campaign.

The last time she campaigned, Clinton found herself faced with an American populace that was tired of the prospect of another “dynasty” of Presidents -Bush, Clinton, Bush…Clinton? 

This coming year the backlash against American nostalgia might not be so overwhelming.

So what does the future hold?

First, though President Obama has broken the Dynasty Pattern, Hillary’s opponents will still to try to present her as a “figure of the past”. After her previous run, however, we can almost bet that she will be prepared for that attack.

We’re guessing that her tactics from the 2008 run will have to evolve in order to distance herself further from her husband. Like Pikachu. (Get it? Pikachu evolves, Hilary Clinton evolves…it’s a joke! But a bad one.)

Second, Hilary’s going to have to deal with the ever growing campaign costs. In the last campaign, Obama and Romney raised a combined 2.0651 Billion dollars ( yes that is Billion with a capital “B”).

Every year the presidential campaign is ruled more and more by the rise of Super Pacs. Does Clinton have the support and funding to run?

Well, already she has mountains of support from some democrats in the states. And, besides her own money mogul funders, Hilary has the advantage of companies that supported Bill.

BUT, see how distancing herself from Bill Clinton can be a double edged coin? If Clinton chooses to run in 2016, she’ll need to walk a very thin line. 

And last? You called it, the gender issue. Clinton may be perceived by the electorate as too “touchy-feely” or weak. Her relatively unremarkable run as Secretary of State isn’t going to help her (and oh, yes… there was that one awkward event in Benghazi…). At the same time, people often regard powerful female figures as less likable as their male counterparts. These are two hurdles that Clinton will have to overcome if she decides to run.

Well, two hurdles out of many more to come.

Go for a stroll in the park. There are many health benefits to spending time in nature, including, perhaps, increased well-being. One UK study showed that subjects were significantly happier when in natural environments as compared to when they were in urban environments.

Perform an act of kindness. Do something nice for someone else today -- it could make you happier, according to University of California research."

1. Freebie: Infinity Icon Set, A Journey Into Space

Space. The Universe. Infinity. Do you tend to get fascinated by these terms and the stories based on them? Well, perhaps we can bring a little bit of the outer space into your earthly projects. Infinity Icon Set features spaceships, satellites, asteroids and solar system planets. This free set was designed by Adam Katyi for To Infinity And Beyond, a space art exhibition of 40 Hungarian graphic designers and painters currently on display in the Budapest Planetarium.

This pictogram-dingbat font allows you to create your own space story, i.e. the lowercase and capital latin letters are the main space icons. You can find the whole solar system once you start typing in numbers. Please note that this freebie is meant for non-commercial use and can be downloaded only if you pay with a tweet or Facebook post. The icon set will soon be updated with new characters, so make sure you stay tuned! (ea)

2. Designing In The Open

It’s sad but it’s just the way it is: in corporate settings, it’s quite common to sign NDA agreements before starting a new project. So in the end, you can’t share what you’ve learned, and often you can’t really reuse the techniques and tools you’ve developed. But have you actually tried to convince the client to design “in the open” instead?

There are quite a few projects that involve the open source community into the projects, presenting the source code on GitHub or just explaining the process and releasing the development files for everybody to download. Gov.uk Frontend provides the full source code of the Gov.uk website on GitHub; The Guardian’s responsive website on GitHub is available as well; and both BBC and National Geographic provide many tools, too. In fact, Brad Frost makes a compelling argument for designing in the open and provides some ideas on the benefits of the approach and how to convince customers to follow this idea. 3. There Is No Average Joe

Who do you design for? Do you rely on archetypes to build the best user experience possible, or do you build around an average user, let’s say a 34-year-old woman with 2.3 children? The question leaves a lot of room for discussion. A thought-provoking read on this controversial subject is Susana Gonzalez Ruiz’s article “Designing for the extremes (or why your average user doesn’t exist)“.

Designing for an average user, so the idea of the article, creates dysfunctions because the “average” is nothing but a formula, a result of statistics that has little to do with real people. A possible solution to increase the experience for every user would be to design for the extremes first so the rest will take care of itself. Very interesting thoughts that have already fueled some discussions on Twitter. (cm)

4. Shape Hover Effect With SVG

Do you remember those dark times when we used JavaScript to mimic hover effects onMouseOver? By using CSS, we finally found a way to easily adjust any CSS property on :hover, but we still couldn’t properly play around with shapes. However, if you combine CSS, SVG and a bit of JavaScript, you can create any kind of hover effect using any shape defined in SVG.

In their article on Shape Hover Effect With SVG, Mary Lou shows how to use the Snap.svg library for just that. The idea is to create a SVG with one path that represents the shape background for some caption and to morph that path into another one on hover. It doesn’t sound very difficult, and it really isn’t. The only issue is that you still need to use JavaScript for the hover effect—which is suboptimal. But perhaps that’s something for you to play with for your next project? (vf)

5. Mobile Devices + Twitter + World

Here’s one for you: collect data from more than 280 million tweets posted from mobile phones, analyze this data, study the geographic location, visualize it on a map and explore geographic usage patterns in unprecedented detail. That’s exactly what Mapbox Twitter Gnip has done.

The visualization displays which mobile phones were used at a specific location, with Android, iPhone and Blackberry users mapped onto the map with corresponding dots. Apparently, iPhone is used a lot in urban areas and city centers while Android is more popular in rural areas. (vf)

6. Screencasts For Web Developers

You can learn a lot from an article or a detailed tutorial, but if you really want to understand a certain technology or tool, it’s great to sit next to someone who has a wide understanding and is able to answer all of your questions. Even better: you can sneak a peek behind their workflows, too!

Well, perhaps you shouldn’t be annoying to your colleague all of the time, so why not get a cup of coffee, biscuits and check a video screencast instead? Chris Coyier’s screencasts often feature interesting workflows and tools, e.g. Build Podcast is all about tools, libraries and techniques. Breakpoint Show is dedicated to developer tools and time-saving techniques. Any other suggestions? Let us know on Twitter! (vf)

7. Tickets Deserve A Redesign, Too

Matthew Lew loves concerts and is among one of the millions of people who buy tickets from Ticketmaster. Being a graphic designer, Matthew couldn’t help but ponder about the design of the tickets. What he noticed was quite alarming. Apparently, in 2013, Ticketmaster tickets looked pretty much the same like they did in 1979. According to Matthew, they looked like code spat out by a faceless robot.

However, robots aren’t the ones who buy and read these tickets. So where on earth (or on the ticket, to be more precise) is the human element? Matthew decided to present a comprehensive redesign of the tickets which you may actually want to consider for real. If you’re all warmed up now and are looking for other problems to solve, try redesigning a currency or even airplane tickets! (ea)

8. Conferences All Over The World

Hurry, the new year has already begun! Just like every year, there are a huge number of Web design events and conferences that will be held… so, how do you plan on keeping track of all of them?

Alex Cowles was having trouble keeping track just like most of us, and has gone ahead and created a simple calendar that seemed to be the best solution: Conference Calendar. This way it’s a little easier to see what’s on and when. We should certainly meet at one of them, don’t you think?! (kv)

Meet Susanna. She is a Biological Sciences major and MARC U*STAR Scholar. She is also a current Undergraduate Research Award (URA) scholar. Her research explores the female song in the Puerto Rican Oriole.

How did you find your mentor for year research project?
Dr. Omland was my BIOL142 professor. I talked to him after class about lecture material and my interests. From there we started talking about a research position.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I love learning about the different mechanisms, causes, and results of evolution. I knew Dr. Omland’s research was going to teach me a lot about evolution.

Is this your first independent research project?
Yes, I have been working on this project, Testing for Female Song in the Newly Recognized Species: The Puerto Rican Oriole for over a year now.

Do you get course credit for this work? How much time do you put into it?
Yes. I have been getting course credit every semester that I have been in lab. During the semester, it depends how much school work I have but I put in about 8 or 12 hours a week or more.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
My advisor, Dr. Omland recommended the URA to me.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA? How much did your mentor help you with the application?
I was a sophomore and had been working in my lab for just less than a year. Dr. Omland must have advised me about my abstract 20 times! We made sure that it was perfect!

Was the application difficult to do?
My advisor, Janet Mcglynn, and Devon Fick gave me and other applicants a lot of advice on how to write a successful application. I had also previously written other grant applications so I was able to edit my writing to fit the scope of the URA.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
The hardest, but most exciting part is the field work. I study the Puerto Rican Oriole, so I get to travel to Puerto Rico and study this bird. I have to wake up before the sun rises, typically 4 a.m. to be out and ready to record the bird songs as soon as they wake up. It’s exhausting work following the birds, taking notes on everything they do, and making sure I get good clear recordings.

What was the most unexpected thing?
The most unexpected things is the amount of support I have been given. Dr. Omland, the Office of Undergraduate Education, the MARC U*STAR program, the graduate students in my lab, and the undergraduate students who help with the field work make an amazing team. The support everyone gives me has definitely helped me be successful!

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?
Apart from field work, I run experiments to determine the sex from feather samples we have taken from birds at the study sites. This gives me lots of practice with PCR and electrophoresis which was really helpful in genetics when we learned about different methods of analyzing DNA. Currently, I am in "Genes to Genomes" and my background in evolution is proving to be a huge advantage.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I am the secretary of Hispanic Latino Student Union and a member of the pre-veterinary society.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Talk to your professors and don’t be afraid to say “I really want to learn about this from you, can I work with you?” The worst they can say is no, but they might really admire your enthusiasm and help you get a position somewhere else.

What are your career goals?
I will continue on to graduate school and eventually get my Ph.D. in evolutionary genetics. I love learning and don’t ever want to stop. A career in research lets me learn something new every day and lets me determine exactly what questions I want to investigate.

Have you shared the results of your work with professionals in your field?
Yes. I presented my research at the American Ornithological Society/Cooper Ornithological Society meeting in Chicago over the summer, and then at the UMBC Biological Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Festival! This past September I presented my poster at the South Eastern Population Ecology and Evolutionary Genetics meeting at a UVA Field Station. I won Best Undergraduate Poster! It was an amazing experience! People were very interested in that my project looks at sexual selection differently than it typically is.
