Manil Suri: AY 2007-08 Wilson H. Elkins Professorship award Professor Manil Suri has been selected to receive a Wilson H. Elkins Professorship for AY 2007-2008.  The award will support Professor Suri's plans to foster interest and learning in mathematics among K-12 students and the general public.

Established in 1978, the Elkins Professorships support professors who demonstrate exemplary ability to inspire students and whose professional work and scholarly endeavors make a positive impact beyond the University System of Maryland.

Each year the UMBC Alumni Association presents annual awards to honor alumni for their professional and personal achievements and service to the University. Dr. McCloskey is a senior cryptologic mathematician for the National Security Agency, where he has worked since 1968.

Seidman The conference, Advances in Control of Partial Differential Equations, is being held on October 28-29, 2006, in honor of the 70th birthday of UMBC Professor Thomas I. Seidman.

Dr. Seidman received his Ph.D. from New York University with K. O. Friedrichs in 1959. In his early career, he spent time both at national laboratories and in industry, before joining the faculty at Wayne State University and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1972, he moved to UMBC and is now serving UMBC in the 35th year.

With this conference, we will honor Dr. Seidman's outstanding research productivity, which includes over 150 papers with more than 60 collaborators, and his continuing research productivity publishing over 4 papers per year. His long and distinguished career over 50 years has particularly impacted the area of control of partial differential equations.
