When Clowns are No Laughing Matter

No sensible person would deny that today’s world can be a grim, dark place.

But what sort of twisted society do we live in where we can’t even trust…clowns??

The trust of circus-goers and party-planning parents everywhere was shattered last Saturday, with the sudden bloody assassination of Tijuana drug cartel kingpin.

The setting: an innocent family party. The culprit: a faux birthday clown.

As if the reputations of men in white face-paint and bright wigs weren’t in sordid enough shape.

The dastardly deed has even incited a response from Mexico’s clown community, condemning this impostor while defending their profession’s honor.

Then again, maybe this isn’t a matter of drug violence, or even a vile attempt to ruin the good name of clowns all over.

Maybe this is one joke that just went too far.

Surveillance Drones, Bugged Phones, and… Spy Rocks?!?

Or three burly agents with sunglasses talking into their collars watching your every move…

Or look up to find a whirling drone overhead eavesdropping on your conversation with your grandmother…

Watch your Step! You might just trip over some “Spy Rocks“.

“Spy rocks” been around since at least 2006 when the Russians discovered just such a device that the British had installed on Russian soil. The Russians weren’t happy to say the least and the indecent seems to have caused “Spy Rocks” to fall out of style. Until now anyway.

“This week at the annual AUSA Army meeting in Washington, D.C., Lockheed Martin showcased developments in their surveillance technology called SPAN (Self-Powered Ad-hoc Network), a “covert, perpetually self-powered wireless sensor network” that can provide “unobtrusive, continuous surveillance” in units so small they can fit in a rock.” –Wired Magazine–

These sleuthing stones may not be under your feet today; Lockheed is still working on marketing the technology at the moment.

So the paranoid can keep their garden shovels in the shed for now. Still what will be next? Spy dirt? Trench coat Tree-trunks? Bugs with Bugs?

Startup Gets Computers to Read Faces, Seeks Purpose Beyond Ads

A technology for reading emotions on faces can help companies sell candy. Now its creators hope it also can take on bigger problems.

Last year more than 1,000 people in four countries sat down and watched 115 television ads, such as one featuring anthropomorphized M&M candies boogying in a bar. All the while, webcams pointed at their faces and streamed images of their expressions to a server in Waltham, Massachusetts.

State Policy Fellowship Program

<Tagline>Open to Current Students or Recent Graduates</Tagline>

Latest information about an exciting career opportunity with the State
Policy Fellowship Program just posted, which could be the perfect for
some students or recent graduates. Its goal is to help build a diverse
generation of future leaders who will shape state policies that affect
    disadvantaged families and communities.

The Fellowship is sponsored the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a
national policy institute, and the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative
(SFAI), a network of public policy organizations in over 40 states that
participate in debates over budget and tax issues and other issues in
their states that affect disadvantaged communities and families.

Below are key details on the program:
- Fellows will spend two years as entry-level analysts working with a
state policy organization belonging to the nationwide SFAI network.
- Fellows will research and write analyses on current policy issues;
brief policymakers, journalists, and others on these issues; and serve
as a resource for advocates and community groups.
- These are paid, full time positions with benefits.
- Fellows will participate in a professional development program that
includes a week-long seminar in Washington, D.C. and additional training
opportunities, including national policy conferences. Additionally,
fellows will be partnered with mentors who are leaders in their field.
- To be eligible for the program, candidates must 1) have a graduate
degree in public policy, public affairs, economics, social work, public
health, law, or a related field by August 2014, 2) have a strong
academic record, and 3) be eligible to work in the United States for the
     two-year duration of the program.

Application requirements include a personal essay, resume, copies of
undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and two letters of
recommendation. Completed applications must be submitted by January 24,
2014, but we encourage applicants to apply earlier. The fellowship
will begin in the latter part of August 2014.
