Baltimore County Police responded to a call at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday about a man walking through Halethorpe carrying a shotgun.
"We received a hunting complaint in the woods near Arbutus Memorial Gardens," said police spokeswoman Cpl. Cathy Batton. "Someone called in and said a man appeared to be following a deer holding a gun.
"But we had no calls of shots fired," she said. "You cannot hunt in the metropolitan area."
Police alerted University of Maryland Baltimore County of the incident near campus and students recieved a text alert to avoid the area.
"The school was notified as a precaution," Batton said. "They restricted the students to indoor activities, but they were not on lockdown."
She said there was never any immediate danger to the students or the school.
"We notify them as a matter of policy if there's police activity in the area," Batton said.
Sgt. Dexter Housel, with campus police, said the incident did not affect classes or the daily routine on campus.
"We've had a few phone calls here from students," he said. "Not many, probably less than 10."
In his latest op-ed in The Baltimore Sun, Political Science Professor Thomas Schaller writes about how Republicans’ attempt to prevent full implementation of the Affordable Care Act was misguided because provisions of the law are becoming increasingly popular.
“But do Americans really oppose the Affordable Care Act? Yes, quote-unquote ‘Obamacare’ is unpopular, with disapproval rates trending around 55 percent, with roughly 45 percent approving. But the Affordable Care Act is actually quite popular,” Schaller writes.
“If that sounds like a contradiction, it is: Americans like almost all of the ACA’s key provisions; unfortunately, they don’t realize many of the most popular provisions are part of the law,” Schaller added.
Schaller also notes how a Kaiser Foundation health tracking poll provided statistics that showed roughly half of Americans don’t realize some of the ACA’s most popular provisions are part of the law.

As both members of and allies to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community at Middlebury, we are appalled by the homophobic letter that was written and taped on a student’s door two weeks ago. The letter included the phrases: “carpet-munching dyke,” “burn in hell,” “you say you’re gay but we know you’ve never fucked a guy… so we’re gonna fuck you till you’re straight,” concluding with the statement, “I know you want it.”
The student notified Public Safety and an investigation is under way. She also received support from their Commons Dean, Professors, and other members of the Middlebury community. However, the student expressed that other than informing Public Safety, none of the people notified knew what further actions to take. No one knew how to answer the question she had: how should students be notified of this incident, if and when she chose to share her story.
