Since 2001 the SERC internship program has been designated a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site by the National Science Foundation. With this funding, along with generous donations from the Smithsonian Women's Committee, and University partnerships we are able to provide internship opportunities to qualified undergraduate students looking to further their knowledge in the sciences.
Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics and physics. Projects are also offered in environmental education and media. Although students will become familiar with all the research being conducted by a particular staff member and with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.
Selection is based upon the student's academic credentials, extent of relevant training or experience, letters of recommendation, and the congruence of the student's expressed goals with those of the internship program. The Smithsonian does not discriminate on grounds of race, creed, sex, age, marital status, handicap or national origin of any applicant.
The specific dates and duration of the internship appointment are arranged between the supervisor and the student. However, internship appointments are generally full time (40 hours per week), 10 to 16 weeks in length, and coincide with the usual academic semesters and summer terms.

Spring Co-op with Emerson Industrial
Kop-Flex Inc., a division of Emerson Electric Co., is a manufacturer of flexible couplings for power transmission applications.
Kop-Flex currently has 2 or 3 paid full-time or part-time co-op positions for Mechanical Engineering students. Kop-Flex offers students a great opportunity to gain experience in mechanical design and manufacturing.
Kop-Flex hires many co-op students for full-time positions after graduation. Currently, 7 of 14 Mechanical Engineers in the Baltimore plant are former co-ops for Kop-Flex.
Duties will include: assisting Product Engineers in the design of mechanical couplings and u-joints used in industrial, power transmission applications; performing rudimentary stress analysis using in-house computer programs; calculating coupling mass elastic data; applying engineering knowledge to modify coupling designs to meet customer specifications; other computer-related duties as assigned. Co-ops will also be expected to interface with our European and Indian engineers, sometimes on a daily basis.
Co-op engineers are expected to possess a basic understanding of machine design principles, as well as introductory engineering knowledge in the areas of stress analysis, mechanics of materials, dynamics, and vibration analysis. They should also be familiar with the use of Microsoft Office and have some familiarity and proficiency with CAD (preferably AutoCAD) as well.
The student will learn basic manufacturing processes, develop the ability to identify and create cost-effective designs, and become familiar with material specifications and applications. Also, the student will learn to communicate with customers and associates, while assisting the company to process day to day work.

, Maansi Raswant, JD, gave a presentation titled The Affordable Care Act’s Impact on Small Business to the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce on October 30, 2013 at the Charlestown Retirement Community.
In the presentation, Raswant gave an overview of the basic provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and described health reform implementation in Maryland; described the ACA mandates for coverage (who needs to have it and who needs to provide it); and discussed how to determine whether an employer is considered a large or small employer, how to purchase coverage through exchanges, new benefits of and requirements for health plans, and how tax credits will be allotted.
