Out of more than 500 hopeful startups across the United States, the Baltimore-based malware protection company survived the third elimination round to reach the final five, the Wall Street Journal announced on Thursday morning.

One of the judges, Wall Street Journal editor Andy Regal, commented in a video, “I’ve been harping all along about my interest in finding CEOs in this documentary series who can really communicate what their business is and we’ve had challenges with that at times, but I think the team at Light Point Security, they do it so quickly and so simply.”

Light Point Security has been featured in several videos since the start of the contest, with co-founders Zuly Gonzalez and Beau Adkins speaking about their experiences working at the National Security Agency, balancing work and family and navigating social media promotion.

The company has gained national attention for its innovative method of protecting computers and networks from malicious online files and spying. Their software allows users to browse the internet from a virtual machine in the cloud, running on Light Point Security’s computers rather than their own.

Light Point Security plans to participate as a featured speaker in the CyberMaryland 2013 conference in October. The company was also an InvestMaryland Challenge finalist last spring and has won accolades in several national and regional contests and rankings.

Light Point Security CEO To Moderate CyberMaryland 2013 Panel On Cybersecurity Innovation And Trends

We’re looking forward to the CyberMaryland 2013 Conference being held Oct 8 – 9 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD. CyberMaryland is a unique conference spanning two days during Cybersecurity Awareness Month that will address the biggest challenges facing America, including future innovation to meet the security challenges facing our country; collaboration across industry, government and educational institutions; and the development of a generation of cyber-warriors.

Not only will it be an opportunity for us to catch up with old friends, but our CEO, Beau Adkins, will be moderating an excellent panel on cybersecurity innovation and future trends. Building complex, flexible layouts has never been easy, but CSS3 has certainly taken away a lot of the headaches.

CSS3 features like Flexbox and Columns have made some complex layouts a real possibility and now they’re being joined by one of the newest additions to the web designer’s toolbox: CSS Regions.

CSS Regions allow you to flow content into a series of containers on a single page. It’s the equivalent of linking text boxes in an application like InDesign. It makes possible some layouts that were previously only possible by blurring the line between data and styles.

Browser support

As always, browser support is far from perfect.

CSS Regions is still a draft, which means it’s experimental. Initially the only browser to actually support it was Internet Explorer 10 (no, I’m not kidding); although IE10 does use an iframe as the content source.

Safari claims to offer support with a prefix.

In Chrome you can test the feature by opening your browser, typing ‘about:flags’ and activating ‘enable-experimental-webkit-features’, then restarting your browser.

Happily there is also a JavaScript polyfill created by Adobe that brings the functionality of CSS Regions to browsers that currently don’t support it, you can find this on github.

Using CSS Regions

Since the purpose of CSS Regions is to allow our text to flow across different containers, the first thing you need is some text:

Now we have the basic content set up, we can link the containers using flow-into and flow-from, you’ll notice in the example I’ve added the -webkit- prefix.

If you check this in a browser you’ll see that the text will just flow from one box to another. If you now position those containers, the text will continue to flow properly.

Understanding flow-into

-webkit-flow-into: text-flow;

This property accepts an identifier as the value. When you pass a value to this property it becomes part of a named flow and it will stop rendering as part of the page flow. You can cancel that by setting the property to none.

The name of the flow you use is arbitrary, just make sure you’re consistent. We can also have multiple elements with the same named flow as in our example above.

This isn’t limited to text, we can also flow images, lists, and many other kinds of HTML content.

Understanding flow-from

-webkit-flow-from: text-flow;

We use this property to specify which element(s) should receive the specified flow.

The value is the name of the flow that we specified for the flow-into property.

Bear in mind that any content styles that you apply to the original text will be maintained across the flow. So if you color the text blue, it will remain blue across all containers.

Final thoughts

To see an example of CSS Regions in action, take a look at this pen I created.

The browser support for CSS Regions is currently weak, and there’s a long way to go before we can rely on it on a daily basis. But, the flexibility that it offers is fantastic, and once full support is in place I think CSS Regions will be the go-to technique for years to come.

Encryption startup KoolSpan raises $9.4 million

Mobile security startup KoolSpan Inc. has pulled in a total $9.4 million in two separate raises led by Security Growth Partners and TWJ Capital, CEO Gregg Smith confirmed on Tuesday.

In an email, Smith (currently overseas) said the funding will go toward enhancing sales and marketing and engineering, as well as providing general operating capital. The company first disclosed the raises this morning in two separate SEC filings.

Bethesda-based KoolSpan's flagship product is the TrustChip, a microSD card that enables voice, text and data encryption for mobile devices. The company in May landed a deal with Samsung's security arm to use TrustChip as the hardware backbone to a new smartphone security product.

The dual raises add to KoolSpan's roughly $20 million in prior venture funding, according to CrunchBase. The larger of the two, $7.4 million, is described in the filing as straight equity. The second $2 million raise is a mix of debt, options, warrants and/or other securities.

Both Security Growth Partners and TWJ Capital are previous KoolSpan investors.
