Repost from the Career Center: Fraudulent Jobs & Employment Scams

The UMBC Career Center works hard to ensure that employers recruiting through Handshake are legitimate. Handshake verifies employers and uses fraud detection tools, but no system is perfect. Unfortunately, scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and may attempt to impersonate legitimate employers through job postings, emails, text messages, or social media.

If you ever receive a job offer or communication that doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and contact the Career Center at careers@umbc.edu before responding.

🚩 Common Red Flags

Be cautious if an employer:

• Offers you a job without an interview.
• Wants to hire you immediately.
• Asks you to deposit a check or purchase equipment with company funds.
• Requests your Social Security number, banking information, or credit card before you've officially been hired.
• Asks you to send or receive money on the company's behalf.
• Uses a Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or other personal email account instead of a company email address.
• Has an email address that doesn't match the company's website.
• Offers unusually high pay for very little work.
• Has numerous spelling or grammatical errors.
• Asks you to communicate only through text messaging or encrypted apps.

Before You Apply

Take a few minutes to verify the employer.

✔ Visit the company's official website.

✔ Search online for the company name plus words like scam or reviews.

✔ Compare the contact email to the company's website.

✔ Google the phone number.

✔ Search for the position on the company's official careers page.

If something doesn't match, proceed with caution.

Protect Your Personal Information

Never provide the following personal information before verifying the employer and accepting a legitimate offer:

• Social Security Number
• Bank account information
• Credit card numbers
• Copies of your driver's license or passport
• Payment for training, equipment, or background checks

Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to send money in order to get hired.

Email & Phishing Scams

Scammers frequently impersonate:

• UMBC faculty or staff
• Well-known companies
• Recruiters
• Human Resources representatives

Remember:

• The "From" address can be spoofed.
• Always hover over links before clicking.
• Never click links or open attachments from suspicious emails.
• Be cautious if you're asked to reply to a different email than the sender's address.
• Forward the suspicious emails to security@umbc.edu.

If You Think You've Been Scammed

If you did not send money:

• Stop communicating with the individual immediately.
• Report the incident to the Career Center.
• Follow UMBC DoIT's recommendations if you shared university credentials.
• Consider notifying UMBC Police if appropriate.

If you did send money or shared financial information:

• Contact your bank immediately.
• File a report with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
• Notify local or campus police.
• Continue monitoring your financial accounts for suspicious activity.

Report Suspicious Employers

If you encounter a suspicious job posting in Handshake, report the employer and email the Career Center (careers@umbc.edu).

Please include as much information as possible, including:

• Employer name
• Job title
• Job ID or posting link (if available)
• Emails or screenshots
• Any communication you received

The sooner we know, the sooner we can investigate and, if necessary, remove the employer and notify other students.

Remember

If a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

When you're unsure, ask. The Career Center is happy to review a job posting or email before you respond. We'd much rather answer a quick question than have a student become the victim of a scam.

You are cordially invited to attend and participate in the 10th annual Provost's Teaching and Learning Symposium at UMBC, which will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University Center. This Symposium will bring together UMBC faculty and staff to discuss transformative learning experiences.

Call for Poster/Demo Proposals
We are soliciting abstracts/applications to present either a poster or a demonstration. Posters should describe projects designed to enhance or assess students' learning or success at UMBC. Demonstrations of a teaching tool designed to foster student learning should show digital tools or digital displays of tools in use, accompanied by a basic poster that announces for viewers the tool and its purpose. While students can be co-authors on posters, a faculty or staff member must be the first author and should be attending to present with the student(s). We encourage submissions connected to the theme of the Symposium, Re-Envisioning General Education: Developing a Unique Foundation to Support Students’ Life-Long Learning.

To submit your abstract, please complete the PT&LS poster application form by Friday, August 7. Proposals will be screened for appropriateness to the Symposium and the author who submits this form will be notified by Tuesday, August 25 if their submission has been accepted. Further instructions about preparing and setting up posters and demos will be sent to presenters in late August. Please note that poster authors are responsible for printing and paying for printing of their posters. Tentatively, posters should be posted before the poster/demo session begins at 2:00 p.m.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities: I am currently working as a GRC Analyst Intern with UMBC DoIT supporting the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), where I contribute to cybersecurity governance and regulatory oversight for critical infrastructure. My day-to-day work involves supporting risk assessments and control evaluations aligned with frameworks such as NIST CSF 2.0, NIST SP 800-53, and NIST SP 800-30, particularly for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), and third-party vendors operating within Maryland’s energy ecosystem. I assist with documenting security expectations, mapping control evidence, identifying control gaps, and contributing to audit-ready documentation used for regulatory review. Through this experience, I’ve gained hands-on exposure to how cybersecurity governance, risk management, and compliance operate in a real-world public-sector and critical-infrastructure environment.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I learned about this opportunity through an email shared by the UMBC Cybersecurity Department, which highlighted the role as a hands-on governance and risk experience supporting the Maryland Public Service Commission. Given my academic focus in cybersecurity governance and my interest in public-sector and critical-infrastructure security, the role aligned strongly with my goals. I applied shortly after receiving the email and progressed through the interview process, where I discussed my coursework, framework knowledge, and interest in regulatory cybersecurity. The process reinforced the value of staying engaged with departmental communications and leveraging UMBC-specific opportunities.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

What I’ve enjoyed most is the opportunity to see how cybersecurity decisions directly impact public trust, regulatory compliance, and critical infrastructure resilience. Working at the intersection of UMBC DoIT and the Maryland PSC has allowed me to understand how cybersecurity governance is applied at a statewide level, balancing technical risk, policy considerations, and stakeholder coordination. I’ve also appreciated working with professionals who value structured frameworks, documentation quality, and risk-based decision-making, which has significantly strengthened my understanding of GRC in practice.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work, I’ve helped strengthen audit readiness and risk visibility by contributing to structured risk assessments, control gap identification, and evidence mapping efforts. I’ve supported the development of documentation that helps standardize how cybersecurity risks are evaluated and communicated across stakeholders, improving clarity and consistency. By aligning technical risks with recognized frameworks and regulatory expectations, I’ve contributed to more informed decision-making around cybersecurity oversight for energy-related systems and vendors.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would encourage students to actively engage with their academic departments, career emails, and UMBC-specific opportunities, as many impactful roles are shared directly through these channels. It’s also important to connect coursework to real-world applications when applying—understanding frameworks and concepts is valuable, but being able to explain how they apply in practice makes a strong difference. Finally, don’t hesitate to pursue roles that may feel challenging; internships are meant to be learning experiences.

2026 AP Scores will start being released by College Board this week – the week of July 6th. Even if you have already requested for your scores to be sent to UMBC, it still may take up to a few weeks for those scores to be received, processed, and evaluated. For additional information on how to transfer coursework and AP scores, you can view this helpful guide – including UMBC’s College Board Code. 

Until the course equivalency is fully listed in your course history you will not be able to use it as a prerequisite to make schedule changes on your own. You can check to see if the course has been fully evaluated by going to myUMBC>>Profile>>Grades>>Course History.

While advisors may be able to make updates to our FALL 2026 course suggestions based on your incoming AP information,  it is the student's responsibility to make schedule adjustments and to reach out to campus representatives if they have questions or concerns. We strongly encourage students to remain vigilant with their incoming AP scores and to make adjustments to their upcoming schedule ASAP. To do so, you can follow the steps outlined below:

• First, you should consult our AP Transfer Policies to verify whether or not you will be receiving credit for your pending scores.

• Next, you can reach out to CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu if you have any questions or concerns about how your scores may affect your STEM course suggestions for the fall (i.e. MATH/BIOL/CHEM/PHYS courses, etc.). Questions regarding any other APs should be directed to the departments that oversee that major. A complete list of advising contacts across all departments on campus can be found HERE. 

• Finally, you will need to use the Schedule Planner or Course Search to put together a new schedule. A helpful video guide for how to ADD/DROP/SWAP classes can be found HERE.  If there are major scheduling concerns or difficulties, you can reach out to CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for a follow-up advising appointment. 

**IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are attempting to adjust your schedule prior to when your AP credits have been fully articulated, you will need to reach out to the respective department (i.e. BIOL, CMSC, ENGL, PSYC, etc.) or professor on record for override permission. To do this, you will need to have already selected your preferred section number of the course you are attempting to register for. All communication must come from your UMBC email account and will need to include your full name, Campus ID (AB0000), specific section information (i.e. LEC/DIS/SEM/LAB), and a screenshot of the related AP score.
