The University System of Maryland (USM) is 25 years old. And you are invited to participate in the celebration.

Throughout the 2013-14 academic year, the USM is observing this milestone with a look at the positive impact that USM has had—and continues to have—on the quality of life in Maryland and beyond. We’ve created a micro site that includes a timeline, a link to the story of how the system came to be, and some interesting facts about the system’s impact.

We’ve also transformed the USM Facebook page into the official 25th-anniversary party site. Be sure to LIKE the University System of Maryland on Facebook for regular updates and your chance to win prizes monthly.

The Web Applications Working Group has published a Last Call Working Draft of File API. This specification provides an API for representing file objects in web applications, as well as programmatically selecting them and accessing their data. Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year.

For the 2013-2014 academic year, two $1,000 scholarship will be given. The recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on November 13, 2013. Attendance at the lecture is mandatory.

Criteria

The student selected to receive this award should:

• Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC.
• Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.
• Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a UMBC faculty from whom the applicant has taken a course.
• Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.
• Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
• Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other community involvement.
