YouTube indecisive over rebrand

When Google acquired YouTube back in 2006, most people expected to see a rebrand to pull the video sharing site closer to its parent company’s corporate style.

That anticipated rebrand may finally be on the cards 7 years later as YouTube rolled out updates to its apps at the end of August, featuring a swanky new logo. Strange then, that the new branding has thus far failed to appear on YouTube’s web sites.

Questions are being asked, particularly in the light of Yahoo!’s disasterous rebrand, if Google has had a change of heart.

The new YouTube app.

The new logo features a red square, the famous YouTube TV shape imposed on it, this time in white, and a generic play icon — not too dissimilar to the favicon YouTube use. The new logo also features Google’s corporate face, Open Sans. And whilst I’m a big fan of the typeface, I do question the wisdom of using the lightest weight for a logo that will need to reproduce very small. Especially in the context of the impending iOS7 release and the light Helvetica the early designs used.

The new YouTube logo.

Given the relative complexities of updating a website and updating and distributing an app, you have to wonder, what’s the delay?

YouTube.com on September 10th 2013.

It seems there are two possibilities: Either google has done a complete about-face and having launched the app with a new brand will be reverting to the Trade Gothic logo shortly; or a full redesign of the YouTube site is imminent.

Either way, the branding would have far more impact if launched across all fronts simultaneously.

What do you think of the new YouTube logo? Should YouTube switch to the new branding or stick with their old? Let us know your views in the comments.

Your UMBC Bucket List

    by David Hoffman

If one of your goals was to attend the university that tops U.S. News & World Report's list of innovative national universities, congratulations; mission accomplished (5 years running). Now the question is, what's on your UMBC Bucket List: the things you want to be sure to do here while you have the chance? Sharing our lists at the start of the year has become a tradition. It's a way of holding ourselves accountable for making sure we have the experiences we don't want to miss.

I've been able to cross a lot of items off of my list over the years (this is my 11th at UMBC), but I still have plenty left: people I want to work with, events to attend, places on campus I've never seen from the inside (I'm looking at you, UMBC Observatory). This semester I'm planning to cross off the biggest and best item of them all: I'm set to complete my doctorate in Language, Literacy & Culture and become a very proud UMBC alum (in addition to being a staff member).

So what's on your bucket list? Take a look at the lists people posted last year and the year before for inspiration, then please share your list (in a comment). Then let's help each other follow through.

Freeman Hrabowski shares UMBC culture, values and history with incoming students at 2013 Convocation

At the 2013 UMBC Convocation, held on Tuesday, August 27, President Freeman Hrabowski welcomed incoming students and shared UMBC’s continued national recognition, the importance of the civil rights movement in opening the doors for diversity in education, and what it takes to succeed at UMBC – and in life.

Dr. Hrabowski spoke to a crowd of more than 1,500, sharing his experience growing up during the civil rights movement and how those tumultuous times ultimately led to social and political change that made it possible for many more Americans – of all backgrounds – to attend college and earn degrees.

Dr. Hrabowski also discussed the state of higher education in America, citing the need to increase our numbers of college graduates. “Nearly half of all students who begin college do not graduate. At UMBC, however, we fully expect that you will graduate – and we will do everything we can to support you,” he said.

Shifting the conversation to UMBC priorities and expectations, Dr. Hrabowski assured the new students the campus community is dedicated to support as well as challenge them. “Our goal for each of you is that you graduate prepared to lead a meaningful, productive life,” he said. “You are here chiefly to prepare for the rest of your life – and you will have the greatest influence on your own success.”
