I'm once again looking for some really good staff people to hire, and]]>
I'd very much appreciate your sending anyone you think would be good in
my direction. (Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is a great place to
work, and a fantastic place to make a difference in our community!)
Currently, I'm looking to hire folks for 4 different positions:
1) Site Coordinator (20 hours a week, 9:30-1:30, in Columbia,
Howard County) to oversee the distribution of meals to homebound elderly
and disabled community members (while ensuring cleanliness & food
safety, and maintaining the site), oversee our wonderful volunteers, and
help us identify clients who need additional services. The successful
candidate must have: Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to
interact well with elderly and disabled adults; the ability to interact
well with volunteers; the ability to speak, read and write English
fluently (fluency in additional languages a plus); the ability to
maintain accurate records; the ability to stand for extended periods and
lift (up to 40 lbs.) while working; a H.S. diploma; a valid driver's
license (with no more than 2 points) and access to a dependable personal
vehicle; the ability to pass criminal background check and drug
screening; plus some knowledge of food handling/sanitation/safety with
the willingness to obtain ServSafe Certification.
2) Substitute Site Coordinators to fill in for individuals on a
short term or long term basis on an as-needed basis. (Hours vary
according to organizational need. When needed, hours are 9:30 - 1:30 or
8:30-1:30.) Locations throughout central Maryland. See site

3) Substitute Client Liaisons to fill in for individuals on a short
term or long term basis on an as-needed basis. (When needed, hours are
8:30 - 4:30. Locations throughout central Maryland.) Client liaisons
conduct intakes, assess needs and connect clients to critical resources,
and work with staff and volunteers to ensure homebound clients receive
the meals and additional services they need. Heavy phone work with
clients, extensive electronic and paper documentation, increasing
knowledge of community resources to assist clients. The successful
candidate must have: Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to
interact well with elderly and disabled community members; excellent
computer skills (familiarity with databases a plus); excellent
organizational skills with strong attention to detail; ability to
maintain accurate electronic and paper documentation; a H.S. diploma
(some college a plus); ability to speak, read and write English fluently
(fluency in additional languages a plus); the ability to stand and lift
(up to 40 lbs.) while working; a current driver’s license and access to
a personal vehicle; the ability to pass criminal background check and
drug screening.
4) Substitute Case Manager to fill in for individuals on a short
term or long term basis. When needed, hours are 8:30 - 4:30. (Some
flexibility possible) Case managers visit homebound clients at their
homes (located throughout central Maryland), evaluate needs, create
isolation reduction plans, locate and connect clients to critical
resources, work with families, document their work electronically and in
hard copy, and work as a team with other staff to ensure that clients
are able to age in place with dignity. The successful candidate must
have: Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to interact well with
elderly and disabled community members; strong computer skills
(familiarity with databases a plus); excellent organizational skills
with strong attention to detail; ability to maintain accurate electronic
and paper documentation; the ability to speak, read and write English
fluently (fluency in additional languages a plus); knowledge of
community resources, college degree in a human services field and/or
relevant paid or volunteer work experience, a current driver's license
and access to a personal vehicle; and the ability to pass criminal
background check and drug screening.

Dr. Eric Zeemering, an assistant professor of public policy, has been named a 2013-14 Fulbright Scholar by Fulbright Canada. He will spend five months at the University of Ottawa investigating how urban sustainability is defined in Canadian cities, with special attention on how social policy and programs are integrated with economic and environmental initiatives.
Dr. Zeemering’s research and teaching interests focus on public management, intergovernmental relations and urban policy (see video below).

Earlier today Spencer Fry posted about the challenge of disconnecting from the internet in his article Disconnecting from the Internet is Impossible, I lovingly disagree.
With everything set up for you to take time away from the internet, and you expecting your days to be filled with sailing and conversation, it would seem that there would be nothing to worry about other than keeping your ship afloat.
Sadly, most of us have forgotten how to be alone with ourselves. Maybe you knew this disconnect was doomed before you set sail, but for the sake of discussion, let’s assume not.
TL;DR Leave your phone below deck, grab that old film camera and a few rolls of whatever, bring a book made of paper, a few pens or pencils and a notepad, and get to know yourself again.
Write about your experience as it happens. At night in your bunk, instead of looking at photos of what your co-worker ate or replying to that tweet, take time to reflect on your day and then post about it when you return.
Film has, for the most part, become a novelty and a chance most are unwilling to take; but hell, you are on a boat so let’s be novel. Speaking earnestly, you would get even more internet money by taking an Instagram photo of your film photo and be able to tag it with ‘nofilter’.
It seems like here we should want for those meditative thoughts, those moments of reflection. Perhaps it’s time to reflect on a single word: self-control. Why stare into a tiny little screen to see who is buying who, what tween role model is ‘twerking’ for charity, or that gif on reddit where yet another unsuspecting cat walks into a saran-wrapped doorway? You are in a location where no one will look at you cross for just staring off into the ocean or just jotting a few gems that just appeared in your stream of consciousness.
The internet is a drug — a powerful one, a magical one, whose power outweighs all others that you will try.
Learn to disconnect through self-control if you truly want to disconnect, but never say you cannot. We choose to connect socially through digital means and we can choose to connect in other ways.
We are social beings, of that point I fully agree. Just don’t forget about yourself.
