Our
research team is studying whether a mindfulness and yoga program promotes
positive outcomes for middle school students. This three-year study in 6
Baltimore City public schools is assessing whether a mindfulness and yoga
program helps students cope with stress and reduces their use of alcohol and
drugs. We are now in the final year of the study and are collecting data from
    7th and 8th graders.

We are
looking for individuals to join our research team and help us conduct
assessments. Assessments include surveys for students and teachers, brief
cognitive tests for students, and physiological measures from students,
including blood pressure and lung capacity.

No prior
    training is required.

Study
activities will occur October – December
    2013. We are looking for:

A minimum commitment of 5 hours per week

Morning availability--most assessments will
occur between 8-noon. It would be ideal if you were free Monday, Tuesday,
         and/or Thursday between 7:30-1.

Several
research staff members will travel to schools together to conduct assessments.
It’s not necessary to have a car but this would be a big help to the project.

This is
a terrific experience if you like working with kids and are interested in yoga/mindfulness
or school-based research. You will get training in how to obtain informed
consent and how to conduct assessments with urban youth and will receive
    ongoing supervision and guidance.

Aviation Internships: Freshmen Engineers welcome to apply!

<Tagline>Spend a Spring Semester or Summer Internship with GE</Tagline>

Each Fall, GE Recruiters come to campus for a GE Info Day and then return a few weeks later to interview students for co-op/intern positions at the GE businesses. This year, the GE Info Day is scheduled for October 2nd and the interview date will be Oct 17th. GE Aviation will be interviewing freshmen, sophomore, and junior mechanical engineering students for engineering and manufacturing positions at GE Aviation. GE Aviation is a high-technology business that provides challenging roles within a great working atmosphere. GE Aviation co-ops perform real engineering work from the start. Underclassmen are provided the opportunity to return for future co-op assignments. Co-ops approaching graduation are given the opportunity to interview for a permanent role. Additionally, the GE Aviation entry level programs are now filled by prior GE co-op students. These entry level programs provide new-hires with opportunities for rotating assignments and technical education before selecting a permanent role in the business. GE Aviation hopes that you’ll consider applying for an interview in October.

To apply, visit UMBCworks and submit your resume by September 18. Applicants should ALSO submit their resume at http://www.gecareers.com/campusinterview. You must do both steps to be considered for an interview.

Applicant Requirements:

Upgrade to New Clicker Software is Required, Not Recommended

<Tagline>Existing Clickers and Receivers WILL work with New Software</Tagline>

However, only the new 5.2.1 version of the software is now installed on lecture hall computers, which had a “permissions” issue yesterday that has been fixed. In addition, only the new 5.2.1 version integrates with the Blackboard grade center.

As a result, we should have announced that the new software upgrade was required for all faculty, whether or not they use the TT software on a lecture hall or on their own laptops. We can't easily support multiple versions of software and use cases (LH computer vs. laptop). In addition, we should have sent this to the UMBC “clickers” email listerserve that is manually updated with email addresses of faculty who require their students to buy clickers at the bookstore. In retrospect, this was an oversight on our part. We apologize and will try to improve our communication going forward.

Background

The new 5.2.1 TT software has been out for a year, but it was released too late for the start of the Fall 2012 semester. In addition, it included a new Mac version that didn't work with our UMBC authentication. By January 2013, the Mac authentication still did not work, so we did not push it out for the Spring 2013 semester. We also didn’t want to do so in the middle of the academic year. We worked on the authentication issue over the summer and announced the new software availability through our update on 8/19.

In addition to our own FAQ, TT offers a webinar on the new software, which has a different initial interface (or "splash screen"), but is essentially the same once you select the TP Anywhere option. Our TT rep has also offered to come to campus for training on the new software on Friday, September 13 (time & location TBA). Finally, there are quite a few other resources we've added to our UMBC Clickers FAQ collection:
