It is recommended that a high quality RG6 coaxial cable is used. The cable should be free of kinks, nicks and cuts to damage it for maximum signal quality. Also, the length of the cable should be minimized to provide the best possible signal.
Coaxial cables may be purchased from the UMBC Bookstore, or from any number of retailers or big box stores in the area.

A series 2 TiVo device should work with the system, provided an external converter box is used. Unfortunately the Series 4 TiVo does not have the inputs for an external converter box.
Unfortunately, we do not currently have CableCARDs (as most Clear QAM systems don't). Additionally, since we do not have CableCARDs, the TiVo Series 4 device cannot tune to any channels. At this time, the Series 4 TiVo is incompatible, but we are still investigating ways to get all TiVos to work as intended.

Requesting a new channel is easy. Put in an RT ticket listing the channel name, and any compelling arguments for it.
While we will do our best to honor the request, some channels may not be available due to technical limitations, availability, or cost.

There may be a slight variance since local channels have been known to add or remove sub-channels from time to time. When this happens, the system is updated automatically.

Unfortunately we do not have a guide channel. However, several listing agencies now have our current channel lineup online, and others are continually added.
TV Guide and Zap2It both have our correct information, and the data may be retrieved by using the zip code 21250. Microsoft Windows Media Center uses the zip code 21228. If you are aware of any other listing agencies that still show invalid lineup data, please submit a ticket and we will work with them to correct it.

Unfortunately, most of the tuners that are available (especially those found in local retail and big-box stores) are ATSC, and are therefore incompatible with our QAM system.
There are two different digital television standards, ATSC and QAM. ATSC is meant for over-the-air, antenna broadcasts to home users, where QAM is the standard employed by digital cable systems. We have tested a couple tuners and verified their compatibility; they have been listed at http://resnet.umbc.edu/cable.php. While this is not an all-inclusive list, we have verified that they do indeed work.

A digital television or digital converter box is required to view the channels on the new cable system.
Most televisions made after 2007 have digital tuners; but a QAM tuner is required for this system. Check with your owner's manual or manufacturer to verify your set's compatibility. If your television does not have a QAM tuner, you may need to buy a digital converter. We have tested a couple and can verify their compatibility; they have been listed at http://resnet.umbc.edu/cable.php .

On August 1, 2013, UMBC switched from analog to an all-digital cable system.
This was done to provide more channels, better quality, and higher reliability. If you have a digital television, a simple channel scan should be all that is needed to start watching.
