The whiteboard in Blackboard Collaborate only accepts PowerPoint and OpenOffice presentation files and image files (.gif, .jpg, and .png).

Note: Only Moderators have access to Load Content. To give a student the permission to upload view: Grant Moderator Privileges to Participant.

  1. Click on Load Content at the top right of the Blackboard Collaborate window
  2. Browse to your file and click Open

Notes:

  • You must have the application that can open the presentation file installed on the computer from which you are uploading the file (e.g. PowerPoint or OpenOffice). Blackboard Collaborate actually opens the presentation and takes snapshots of the slides. If you have animated transitions they will not work in Blackboard Collaborate.
  • You can only import PowerPoint, OpenOffice presentations and image files (.jpg, .gif, and .png only), not files from other presentation applications, or Word documents, or PDFs, etc.

If a student is still enrolled in your course, manually removing them will not permanently remove them from your Blackboard course shell. Because it automatically syncs against the official UMBC enrollment roster in Peoplesoft, the student will be added back to your course within 2 hours.

Students are not automatically removed from a Blackboard roster upon dropping a course, or transferring sections. In the case of a transfer, the student’s name will show up in BOTH sections, so you will want to address that.

We do not support the practice of removing/deleting users from a Blackboard roster. This is done as a safety precaution since this function deletes all records of the student having been in the course and cannot be undone. Instead, we recommend that you make the course unavailable to the user. This maintains the students’ records in the course in case a mistake was made, or the student changes their mind. This will also prevent the student from continuing to access the course material.

  1. Login to Blackboard and enter the course
  2. In the control panel (under Course Management on the left hand navigation panel), click Users and Groups to expand the options beneath
  3. Click Users - the list of users appears
  4. Locate the user you wish to remove(note that you may have several screens/pages of users)
  5. Click the chevron (drop-down arrow) to the right of their username
  6. Select Change User's Availability in Course
  7. Select No on the drop down labelled
    Available (this course only)
  8. Click Submit

  2. Click on the contextual menu button to the right of their name, and select the Change User's Role option

  3. Choose a new role for the User
  4. Click Submit

HTTP error 403 means that you are not authorized to view the web page which you are attempting to load. WebAssign is a separate account and not accessible with a myUMBC account.

Before you can login to WebAssign, you first have to set up your registration. Here are the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Go to the login page at http://www.webassign.net/student.html or click the login button on the WebAssign Home Page
  2. Click I have a Class Key. If you don't know the class key, please ask your instructor or TA
  3. Enter the class key for your class in the fields that appear
  4. You should see the correct class information. Click Yes, this is my class
  5. Choose the link that applies to you (I need to create a WebAssign account or I already have a WebAssign account - the latter if you have used WebAssign in a previous class).
  6. Fill out all the information on the form that appears. If this is your first WebAssign account, you can choose your username and password as you please (otherwise you can keep the ones you already had). For institution, use "umbc". Make sure you enter your correct University Identity Number (UIN)
  7. Now you should be able to login with your WebAssign username and password (not myUMBC)

Once you have obtained a WebAssign account, you are ready to access WebAssign assignments from within Blackboard.

  1. Log in to Blackboard and enter your course.
  2. Locate the Start Here button and log in to WebAssign.
  3. Then within the Blackboard course, navigate to the link for the WebAssign assignment or simulation, and open it.
  4. You will need to log in to WebAssign again before each assignment or simulation.Hints: Make sure all other browser windows are closed.  If you have had a period of inactivity you might need to log in to WebAssign again, or shut down the browser completely and open up a fresh instance.

  3. Choose Grade Center under the Control Panel
  4. Click on Full Grade Center
  5. Click on the gray Work Offline button at the top, right-corner
  6. Click Download
  7. Choose User Information Only option for Select Data to Download. Leave the rest of the options selected at their default options.
  8. Click Submit and Download

You can change the "homepage" or entry point of your course so that your preferred Course Menu item is the opening page:

  1. Click Style under the Customization menu from the Control Panel
  2. Scroll down to option #4 and choose the Course Menu item you want to be the entry point for the course
  3. Click Submit

  2. Type the new Course Name in the text box then click Submit

    Customizing your course title is optional, not required. Instructors that teach multiple sections of the same course can use Course Title Customization to identify identical courses by adding the schedule line number or a meeting days. Important: credit courses should follow the standard nomenclature that Help Desk creates. Instructors can customize by adding information. Please try to avoid removing information.

When the Edit Mode is OFF, the course is presented in the Student View. Viewing content in this mode allows you to assess what students will see when viewing a course.

When the Edit Mode is ON, contextual menus and other editing tools will be available to manage the course content.

Click on the Edit Mode toggle switch to turn the edit view off and on.
