To find out if you are required to file a tax return, you may contact the IRS or a tax preparer.

Typically when these items are requested, we also request the Independent or Dependent Verification Worksheet. At the bottom of the form in the Tax Filing Status section, check the box that says you worked but were not required to file and attach a copy of all of your W-2s.

Typically when these items are requested, we also request the Independent or Dependent Verification Worksheet. At the bottom of the form in the Tax Filing Status section, check the box that says you did not work, and we will remove the alert for the tax return transcript/IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

We strongly recommend that students and parents have the tax return transcripts sent to their home and then provide the UMBC Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships with a copy.
Tax return transcripts sent directly from the IRS to UMBC cannot always be linked to the student’s file. Each page of the document should contain the student’s name and campus ID number.
