How do I turn off the pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer?

Troubleshooting tip: If you are pulling reports or unofficial transcripts from Peoplesoft and nothing happens after processing, try turning off the pop-up blocker.
  1. Click Tools menu
    • Press Alt-T if you don't see a menu  
  2. Click Internet Options
  3. Click Privacy tab
  4. Under Pop-up Blocker, UnCheck Turn on Pop-up Blocker
  5. Click OK

When I came across AngularJS a couple weeks ago, I was intrigued at first. By the time I had worked through the set of tutorials available on the AngularJS website, I was thrilled to have found this framework.

What is AngularJS? AngularJS is the (relatively) new kid on the coding block. To quote from their website it is “a structural framework for dynamic web apps” which is especially well-suited for building one-page web apps, although it’s certainly not limited to that.

Developed in 2009 by Miško Hevery and Adam Abrons — both Google employees at that time — it is entirely JavaScript and entirely client-side, so anywhere JavaScript can run, AngularJS can run. It’s also small: compressed and minified it’s less than 29 kb. And it’s open source under the MIT license. You can even use the logo, available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

According to Wikipedia the goal of Angular “is to augment browser-based applications with model–view–controller (MVC) capability” and it does just that, providing a binding/MVC framework. That’s two-way binding, mind you. Delicious. With a structure as simple as {{ my data }}, you bind data to your page. The $scope service detects changes to the model and modifies HTML expressions in the view by way of controllers. Working in the other direction, changes to the view are reflected in the model. This removes the need for the vast majority of data-centric DOM manipulations many of us, myself included, take for granted when working with a library like jQuery.

Angular runs right out of the box with no library dependencies, although it can be extended with the many modules that are available, and of course you can build your own to fit your specific needs. Being pure JavaScript, it also has the benefit of being server-agnostic.

Being accustomed to a powerful library like jQuery, it’s easy to want to mix it in to do things Angular can already do. Recognizing this potential pitfall, the developers have this to say: “If you’re struggling to break the habit, consider removing jQuery from your app. Really. Angular has the $http service and powerful directives that make it almost always unnecessary.” One thing is for sure, if you stick to Angular, the jQuery loops and explicit back-and-forth with the server will be absent from your code, since Angular provides such a succinct and clean method of achieving the same things.

 

Directives

Angular uses directives to plug its action into the page. Directives, all prefaced with ng-, are placed in html attributes.

Some common directives that come pre-built with Angular are:

ng-app: this is essentially the initial entry point of Angular to the page. It tells Angular where it gets to act. <html ng-app> is all it takes to define a page as an Angular application.

ng-bind: changes the text of an element to the value of an expression.
<span ng:bind=”name”></span> will display the value of ‘name’ inside the span. Any changes to ‘name’ are reflected instantly in the DOM anywhere the variable is used.

ng-controller: specifies the JavaScript class for the given action. Controllers are typically kept in external .js files.

ng-repeat: creates the very clean loop structures in your page.

effortlessly loops through each item in the collection.

I haven’t used them yet myself, but I have read that creating custom directives can be a tricky issue, something that takes some time to wrap your head around. Angular offers a video to help clarify the concept.

 

Some sample code

As mentioned before, the ng-app directive in the <html> tag sets the stage for Angular to run in the page.

Add <script src=”your/path/to/angular/angular.js”></script> to the page head to bring in the Angular framework itself.

<script src=”your/path/to/js/controllers.js”></script> points to the external JavaScript file or files that hold the JavaScript classes your Angular app will call. A very simple class, as an example, might be:

Passing ng-controller “ItemListCtrl”, the name of my imaginary JavaScript class, tells Angular what code to run:

and double-bracket notation tells Angular what expressions to evaluate.

ng-repeat is a wonderfully succinct repeater directive that loops through the current collection and does the specified action or provides the specified data. It is so simple and clean.

Admittedly, that doesn’t seem so impressive, but the idea itself is. Very simple page markup and controllers make getting started with Angular, well, very simple.

Getting real data into your app is pleasingly simple too. Angular likes to consume JSON:

This returns a JSON object that can manipulated at will in your Angular app.

 

And it’s built for testing, too!

One of the basic tenets Angular was founded on was that apps built with it be fully testable. For end-to-end testing we have Angular Scenario Runner to simulate user interactions with your app. You feed it scenario tests written in JavaScript.

For debugging in the browser, AngularJS Batarang is a Chrome extension available on github.

 

Resources

As AngularJS gains more traction, more resources will become available, but there are already a number of sites that provide instruction and ways of extending Angular.

The AngularJS site itself, is of course your definitive source. They offer rock-solid, simple tutorials and have a fairly active Google+ presence.

There are a number of Angular repositories on GitHub.

Angular Modules, offers a collection of user-submitted modules, from Backbone services to Rails integration.

Summer 2013 PAID Technical Internships

Intern – Software Development 

This position will provide an opportunity to understand, test and support enterprise-level applications that are critical to the success of Prometric.  The candidate must have a firm understanding of object-oriented and unit testing concepts and an interest in learning leading edge Microsoft technologies in an effort to support and grow a comprehensive suite of tests to ensure the reproducible success of a quality application deliverable.

 

Unit test and automated UI test implementation and maintenance in TFS.  Will receive technical guidance in areas of C#, Microsoft.NET and the selected unit testing frameworks, but must bring a knowledge of unit testing and OO best practices.

 

Intern – Lab Services Engineer 

This is an entry-level opportunity to work with an energetic team in our Lab Services and Integration Infrastructure group.  The team supports Prometric’s testing teams and external client labs, along with managing the system integration and validation of all Test Center systems.  This individual needs to be able engineer labs and perform analytical tasks for troubleshooting problems.   

  • Work with internal cross functional groups to ensure issues and resolution are conveyed in a timely manner.
  • Build and test the labs to ensure labs are delivered on time.
  • Update and maintain documentation for lab builds and procedures.
  • Provide support as needed to meet infrastructure hardware and software requirements in a timely basis to meet project milestones and meet operational requirements for channel support.
  • Accumulating all information required for design and deployment plans. This involves the review of technical specifications and client requirements for correct configurations.
  • Responsible for identifying inconsistencies with technical specifications and software components provided and then taking steps to address those inconsistencies to ensure that all client and business requirements are met prior to package creation.

This position will help with day to day department activities, as well as be involved in research/exploratory projects. Intern – Test Publishing/Test Quality 

This position will assist with Metric reporting and documentation updating needed for Test Publishing and Test Quality as assigned by the manager. They will also be assisting with Auditing of exams and review of formatting and alignment issues on an exam prior to it going to the next groups. Also during this phase they will also be doing score testing for Test Publishing to ensure that all builds have been completed correctly and will also assist with any further documentation or special projects that is needed during this time.

When building a web form you need to consider a number of factors for your particular application. Many developers will need to handle special data such as the user’s birthday, invoice date, or subscription trial period. These examples could all benefit from the use of a dynamic date picker for HTML5 input fields.

Thankfully there are a number of handy open source tools you may utilize for this task. I want to present a collection of the best jQuery plugins for creating more consistent date choosers. These are often referenced from a calendar drop-down interface but can be designed any number of ways. Each plugin is very simple to implement on any HTML form, and once you start applying this method it will be difficult switching back.

DatePicker

This specific jQuery date picker plugin was developed by Stefan Petre who has released a number of related plugins as well. His work is fantastic and provides a solid base for web developers to quickly build date input forms. This particular code offers a myriad of customizations where you can start at any year, month, or date.

It is also possible to limit the choices a user can make by passing distinct parameters into the jQuery function. If you want to edit some of these variables check out the documentation page with all the options and value points. It is extremely lightweight and the initiation can be done with a single line of code:

$('input').DatePicker(options);

Overall this is a great plugin to get started when you need something that works quickly. The CSS styles are a bit drab, but it doesn’t take a lot of time to design your own custom theme. Check out the examples on his page to get a better idea of how you can structure this plugin.

Bootstrap DatePicker

The Twitter Bootstrap Datepicker is actually an extension of the original plugin by Stefan Petre. He has gone back to rework the styles which include default classes right out of the Twitter Bootstrap stylesheet. The plugin homepage features a lot of unique demos which are simply stunning. They look nicer using the typical Bootstrap interface designs.

One thing you may notice when going over the documentation is a lack of additional options. Many of the same features have been ported over from his first DatePicker jQuery plugin. However the website itself does not include all of these options, so developers may find the implementation a bit confusing. But keep testing out various solutions until you get a design that works properly and blends properly into your layout.

glDatePicker

When it comes to interface design the glDatePicker plugin has one of the best. You can include this plugin just like you would any other sample code. The jQuery selector will tie onto an existing input field and the calendar will appear directly beneath this area. All you need to include is the default stylesheet and their JavaScript plugin file.

What I like most about the interface is that it caters to a typical user’s expectation. You may click on the top month or year to directly edit these values from a select dropdown. Then by clicking on any of the allotted dates you can add values into the form field. The sheer number of features makes this plugin worth while on any dynamic website. Similarly, you can download the plugin codes from Github and browse through the open repository.

jQuery UI Datepicker

I think most jQuery developers at least know about jQuery UI. It is a library for building common interface features such as progress bars, tabs, tooltips, and accordion menus. Luckily there is also a component for rendering input date pickers using jQuery UI Datepicker. The codes are very simple and follow the same formatting you would expect with any other jQuery plugin.

The library comes equipped with more dynamic features than the basic examples above. You can now include date ranges where users select 2 different dates for 2 different input fields. Then using these values it is possible to combine a full date period for querying articles and similar data requests. It will take a bit of time customizing the styles, but it is definitely an exciting option for JS developers. Just remember this plugin will require dependencies for jQuery and jQuery UI libraries, along with the jQuery UI theme stylesheet.

Zebra Datepicker

Zebra Datepicker is another solution which starts at the bare bottom and works up to include more controlled features. All you will need is the regular jQuery library and it’s good to go! There is an optional Zebra Datepicker CSS file if you want to use their default stylesheet, or rebuild your own custom theme from their base. The file sizes are tiny and certainly wouldn’t cause a problem with loading times, so you’re good-to-go there too.

The plugin homepage features a series of demos to explain how you can implement this plugin. It does not require a lot of code, but as always you do have the choice to include a myriad of similar options. It is possible to limit only to future dates or even between a specific section of dates. Zebra’s options provide a mini API for developing your input fields with dynamic content.

ptTimeSelect

Moving away from the standard date pickers into date/time, we have the jQuery ptTimeSelect plugin. This is completely open source and free to download for any website project. It will display very similar to the jQuery UI picker and targets AM/PM time instead. Users can select between 24 hours of the day along with sub-selections in 5-minute intervals. This plugin has a similar number of parameter options you may setup on different input field selectors.

For example, you may update the container class along with the button labels and hr/min/sec text labels. There are also two specific callback parameters named onBeforeShow and onClose. You may define custom functions to retrieve or send new data after the user opens the time select window or chooses their time value. It is an interesting plugin which comes in handy for developers looking to manage time values instead of date/time.

jQuery Mobile DateBox

Web developers who have been following jQuery Mobile are likely knowledgeable about the library’s extended list of features. Mobile webapp development has never been easier with standard components, just like the ones you would find inside Bootstrap. This jQM DateBox plugin was created specifically for use inside a jQuery Mobile web application. The date picker input field will display a popup calendar after the user taps to select.

There are a number of various display options like the iOS sliders and the typical date/time button boxes. It is certainly not a plugin you will want to include on all your websites, but when building over jQuery Mobile it can be difficult managing such dynamic inputs with your own code. Even if you are not using the jQM framework it is still possible to run this plugin for a mobile site, as long as you include the required library dependencies. Final Thoughts

Although this is not an exhaustive list, I have tried to include all the major datepicker plugins found across the web. This collection focuses on the widest array of uses by developers, and there will always be new open source projects as time goes on. We identify important issues in the application of digital forensics to Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud computing and develop new practical forensic tools and techniques to facilitate forensic exams of the cloud. When investigating suspected cases involving cloud computing, forensic examiners have been poorly equipped to deal with the technical and legal challenges. Because data in the cloud are remote, distributed, and elastic, these challenges include understanding the cloud environment, acquiring and analyzing data remotely, and applying the law to a new domain. Today digital forensics for cloud computing is challenging at best, but can be performed in a manner consistent with federal law using the tools and techniques we developed.

The first problem is understanding how and why criminal and civil actions in and against cloud computing are unique and difficult to prosecute. We analyze a digital forensic investigation of crime in the cloud, and present two hypothetical case studies that illustrate the unique challenges of acquisition, chain of custody, trust, and forensic integrity. Understanding these issues introduces legal challenges which are also important for federal, state, and local law enforcement who will soon be called upon to conduct cloud investigations.

The second problem is the lack of practical technical tools to conduct cloud forensics. We examine the capabilities for forensics today, evaluate the use of existing tools including EnCase and FTK, and discuss why these tools are incapable of trustworthy cloud acquisition. We design consumer-driven forensic capabilities for OpenStack, including new features for acquiring trustworthy firewall logs, API logs, and disk images.

The third problem is a deficit of legal instruments for seizing cloud-based electronically-stored information. We analyze the application of existing policies and laws to the new domain of cloud computing by analyzing case law and legal opinions about digital evidence discovery, and suggest modifications that would enhance cloud the prosecution of cloud-based crimes. We offer guidance about how to author a search warrant for cloud data, and what pertinent data to request.

This dissertation enhances our understanding of technical, trust, and legal issues needed to investigate cloud-based crimes and offers new tools and techniques to facilitate such investigations.
