Probability & Statistics Day 2025 May May 9-10, 2025 The 16th annual UMBC Prob-Stat Day conference will be held at the University of Maryland Baltimore County on May 9-10, 2025. The program consists of a short course  on Principles of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging  by Professor Martin Lindquist of Johns Hopkins University on Friday (May 9, 2025), followed by talks on the rest of May 9, 2025 and all day of May 10, 2025 (Saturday).  Details will be available on the conference website soon. On April 4, 2025, 8th grade students from Queen Anne’s County visited UMBC's campus as part of a broader campus tour. The youth visit was led by Dr. Sarah Gardenghi, Assistant Vice Provost of Educational Pathways and Partnerships at UMBC. The students met with current undergraduate students to hear their perspective on college and participated in an activity related to research going on at UMBC. For the activity, the students visited the Earth and Space Institute, where ESI scientist Dr. Brent McBride demonstrated how climate scientists use light to learn more about Earth’s climate (see photo).

The students used linear polarizer sheets to change the light passing through common household objects, such as transparent cutlery, corn syrup, and vegetable oil. Depending on the material, the color of these objects changed dramatically or had no effect at all when a polarizer was rotated in front of it. For example, rotating a polarizer in front of the cutlery produced beautiful rainbow-like stress patterns. Dr. McBride put transparent packing tape in various directions over a glass plate, as well. When observed through a polarizer, a mosaic of rainbow shapes and polygons appeared. These colors changed from teal to purple and orange as the observing polarizer was rotated (see photo).

The tape, transparent plastic, and corn syrup can act as wave plates. These filters alter how much and the content of the light that passes through based on the wavelength of the light. The differing index of refraction between the objects and the air, as well as their molecular composition and surface shape, can also impact how much color or brightness is observed.

Polarization imaging technology is currently used by ESI’s HARP2 instrument on NASA’s Plankton Aerosol Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. Climate scientists can use HARP2 polarized imagery to distinguish dust vs. smoke, liquid water droplets vs. ice crystals, and surface or ocean signals from the atmosphere in both familiar and new ways.

Returning Adult Learners are eligible for four scholarships, applications are due at the end of May (5/30/2025)! 

Available Scholarships
  • Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship: This is the signature scholarship for the Women's, Gender, & Equity Center's Returning Adult Learners Scholarship Program. Each year, 12-15 Newcombe scholars are selected. Award amount varies between $500 - $4,000 based on individual need and merit for the academic year. 
  • AEGON Scholarship: Each year, two to four students are selected. Recipients must have financial dependents. Award amount varies between $1,000 - $3,000. 
  • The Richard and Roslyn Bryson Neville Memorial Fund: Each year, one to three students are awarded. Recipients must be U.S citizens. Award amount varies between $1,000 - $1,500. 
  • Rosalie Tydings Scholarship: Each year, one student is awarded. Award amount is approximately $800.
Application Requirements:
  • Must be a UMBC student pursuing first bachelor's degree 
  • Must be age 25 and older Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher 
  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll part-time or full-time Fall 2025
  • Must complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Requirements if you receive the scholarship:
  • Submission of post-acceptance forms
  • Attendance for an orientation
  • Attendance at once-per-month workshops
  • One-on-one meeting with a Women's, Gender, & Equity Center Staff Meeting
