    The Fracking of Rachel Carson: Silent Spring in an Age of Environmental<br>

    *Sandra Steingraber,* Professor of Education, Stanford University<br>

    A cancer survivor, Dr. Sandra Steingraber has written extensively on the<br>
    intersection of the environment and public health. She will discuss what we<br>
    have learned, and failed to learn, in the 50 years since Rachel Carson's<br>
    publication of  Silent Spring , and will examine the threat to public<br>
    health that fracking poses.<br>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Dr. Ant Ozok has been appointed an Adjunct Associate Professor position at the Department of Anesthesiology and a Visiting Associate Professor position at the Armstrong Institute of Patient Safety and Quality, both at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, effective May 2012. These appointments are allowing Dr. Ozok to closely collaborate with the faculty at these institutions on jointly arranged workshops, externally sponsored proposals and ongoing projects, and journal publications in world’s leading health care journals, as well as easy access to the Johns Hopkins Hospital system for data collection and experimentation purposes.</span></div>

    <span><span>A: </span></span><span><span>I think the donuts in the Pura Vida cafe in the library are delicious!  But not very many people know about them.  When I was visiting here as a high school senior, I saw a group of people set up two tightropes between the tall trees near the admissions office and try and walk across them.  It was something that really stuck with me and showed me how even though UMBC students care about their academics, they know how to loosen up and have fun.  Interestingly enough, I haven't seen them since--it must have been a sign!</span></span>
