Valentine’s Day may be over, but the drama certainly isn’t.

Last week, a Subway store in Angers, France ran a special deal on sandwiches. The catch? It was only offered to straight couples. The franchise owner defended his stipulation with a small note at the bottom of the advertisement:

“Discrimination: No, the marriage for all law has advanced, but has yet to be ratified by the Senate. Until then, I’ll use my freedom of expression.”

After photos of the advertisement began showing up online, Subway’s corporate offices closed the franchise on Friday. The company also released a public apology on Facebook:

The SUBWAY brand is strongly committed to maintaining the values ​​of diversity and inclusiveness in its restaurants around the world and does not endorse in any discrimination of any kind. We apologize to all those people who felt offended by the individual promotional initiative for Valentine’s Day of a restaurant in Angers, France.

According to the Huffington Post, another Subway in Angers was forced to shut down its Facebook page and denounce any association with the other franchise after it started to receive hateful comments and messages.

The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) has scholarships available for the fall semester First Generation Scholars Program. This achievement-based program offers first generation college students significant financial, academic and pre-professional assistance for enrollment in an IFSA-Butler semester or year program. The application deadline for fall semester 2013 is Friday, March 1.

The scholarship is worth up to $2,500 and covers $500 in housing and meals, flight costs (approximately $,1500 value), student visa fees where applicable, and passport fees. Recipients also participate in a blogging program and a resume building workshop, and they receive specialized first generation college student information.

The scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 2.7. The scholarship is not based on financial need, but applicants do need to complete a Financial Footprint. Applicants must submit a CV or resume and a 500-word essay related to the first generation college student experience.
