Spring 2013 MechE Internship with Northrop Grumman Internships are a key strategy in the Electronic Systems (ES) sector college recruiting program.  Northrop Grumman offers a variety of challenging internships and co-ops for qualified students.
 
This position offers the opportunity to work in the Hardware organization as part of the Test Engineering team.  The position consists of lower level design work, configuration updates and control, and assisting on engineering projects with some hands on work.  Ability to multi-task, organize small projects, and use tools is a plus.  Experience using MS Office tools, and some experience with CAD/CAM design tools, specifically Siemens NX (Unigraphics) will be helpful.
 
Basic Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree (or higher level) college/university program;
Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering;
Have at least a 2.8 (out of 4.0) overall GPA;
Registered with their respective college or university co-op office;
Available to work 15-19 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks during the Spring 2013 Semester.
US Citizenship required for this position

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates that have completed at least their sophomore year of a Mechanical Engineering major are preferred.

When did you start conducting research at UMBC? How did you find a mentor and project to work on?
I started doing research at UMBC during the Fall 2011 semester. I had a very helpful Teaching Assistant in one of my classes during Spring 2011 who was looking for some help with her research and she invited me to work with her.

What did you know about your field/project when you started? How did you learn what you needed to know?
Previous to starting this research project, I had a solid background in general psychology, but I did not know a lot about the type of community psychology that our project is based on. I learned a lot through discussion of the project with my mentors and through researching background information on the topics that we were studying.

Who do you work with on your project? Other undergraduates? graduate students? faculty?
I mostly work with one graduate student, Magda Permut, and her mentor, Professor Ken Maton.

How did you decide to present at URCAD?
I received a Travel Grant through the Office of Undergraduate Education to help fund a trip to present the research that I was doing at a conference in California. The Office of Undergraduate Education asked if I would also be willing to present the research at URCAD.

Was the application difficult?
I felt that the URCAD application process was fair and straightforward.

How did you know what to put on your poster?
The poster presentation information session led by Dr. Steven Miller greatly helped me to understand the basics of what should go on a research poster. I have also received guidance from the graduate student that I work with.

What are your goals for after UMBC?
After graduating from UMBC, I would like to enter into a graduate program and ultimately pursue research as a career.

Would you suggest to other undergraduates that they find a research project?
I would absolutely suggest that other undergraduates get involved with a research project. It can not only help you to become more familiar with certain areas of a subject, but it also encourages you to be creative and motivated. There are many personal and professional benefits that can be gained by being part of a research project.

What else are you involved in at UMBC?

I also work as a desk staffer at Potomac Hall on the UMBC Campus.

Composting!

Composting is moving forward! It started this fall with True Grits Dining Hall composting all the food waste, and now the Commons is on board too! If you have ideas and suggestions on where you would like to see composting available on campus, let us know! Just drop off your biodegradable food scraps in the labeled bin to help turn organic matter back into healthy fertile soil, rather than filling up endless landfills! Unless of course, the movie Wall-ee didn't move you at all! ;)

 If NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller had decided to live on campus for his senior year of college, every detail of my life today would be different.
I kid you not.

Miller had a spot reserved in one of UCLA’s residential suites that year, but he got an off-campus apartment just before school started. If he hadn’t, his departure would not have freed up a spot in that suite for me. (When I arrived with my belongings after the first week of school, my suite-mates were disappointed to discover they would not be living with a basketball star after all).

If I had not moved into that suite, I would not have become friends with my roommate Lloyd. And he would not have managed my campaign for Student Body President the following spring, almost single-handedly swinging the election my way. And if I had not won the election, I would not have felt inspired and empowered to apply to Harvard’s graduate program in Public Policy that fall.

If I had not entered the Public Policy program, I would not have met my friend Richard. So I would not have joined him six years later at a small Boston-based nonprofit running community organizing projects in cities around the United States. And I would not have been in Pittsburgh on organization business one December to meet the woman I would eventually marry. And we would never have moved to Maryland together. And I would not now be working at UMBC.

I suppose you could conclude that life is a crapshoot, full of circumstances beyond our control. But I prefer to see it a little differently: that in the push and tug of events, there are openings through which you can pass to new worlds. And in those worlds you can discover and fulfill the promise of your self; and find the path with your real name on it. 

Maybe there’s just such an opening for you, in the circumstances of your life, right at this moment.
