UMBC CSEE department members submitted a number of #ifihadglass posts hoping to get an invitation to pre-order a Google Glass device. Several came from the UMBC Ebiquity Lab including this one that builds on our work with context-aware mobile phones.

Reports are that as many as 8,000 of the submitted ideas will be invited to the first round of pre-orders. To get a rough idea of our odds, I tried using Google and Bing searches to estimate the number of submissions. A general search for pages with the #ifihadglass tag returned 249K hits on Google. Of these 21K were from twitter and less than 4K from Google+. I’m not sure which of the twitter and Google+ posts get indexed and how long it takes, but I do know that our entry above did not show up in the results. Bing reported 171K results for a search on the hash tag, but our post was not among them. I tried the native search services on both Twitter and Google+, but these are oriented toward delivering a stream of new results and neither gives an estimate of the total number of results. I suppose one could do this for Twitter using their custom search API, but even then I am not sure how accurately one could estimate the total number of matching tweets.

Can anyone suggest how to easily estimate the number of #ifihadglass posts on twitter and Google+?

1)   Load the software DVD into the disk drive of your computer.  A Mathematica installation menu should appear shortly. However, if it does not launch you may have to launch the setup manually by navigating to your disk drive and activating the setup executable. In the following instructions the necessary options are highlighted by a red border.

2)   Click Next to proceed.

 

3)        Click Next to create a Mathematica install directory.

 

4)     Leave the default options selected and click Next to proceed.

 

5)    Click Next to proceed.

 

6)   Click Install to begin installing Mathematica.

 

7)    Enter the Activation Key in the text box and click Activate to complete the installation. If you need to request an Activation Key, follow the link under Stand-alone on our Mathematica software downloads page in myUMBC, and fill out the form on Wolfram's website. The activation Key will be sent to your email address.

Digital Measures is a commercial software product that will replace the Faculty Annual Report (FAR) in Calendar year 2014. Based on input from the Deans, we have decided to try a pilot implementation in 2013. As part of this pilot, there are nine departments using Digital Measures in lieu of the current FAR. The nine departments are Information Systems, Geography and Environmental Systems, Gender and Women’s Studies, JCET, and the five departments in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS).

This memo will outline the process for the pilot departments. ALL OTHER DEPARTMENTS WILL USE THE ORIGINAL myUMBC FAR.  The due date for both Digital Measures reports and the FAR will be April 10, 2013.

The main difference between Digital Measures and the FAR is that we are loading data regarding individuals into Digital Measures. As a result, we will load teaching data, grants data, and demographic information on file into the system. If you notice an error, you will be asked to let us know by submitting an RT ticket, so that we can track and correct the problem using the current system of record.

During the pilot implementation, faculty (as they have done in the FAR) will be expected to enter into Digital Measures their scholarly and creative accomplishments, service work, and other activities that are not tracked by our official systems.

For support, we hired FosterKnowledge consultants Susan Dawson, sdawson@umbc.edu and Marni Blachowitz, marnibl@umbc.edu. Susan developed training for the UMBC SA project.  Based on early feedback with some faculty that we have worked with, we believe most faculty will find this web-based package straightforward to use; however if any faculty member feels they need additional support we will be glad to provide assistance.

We will modify the start screen on the existing FAR so that faculty participating in the pilot implementation will be alerted to use the link specified for Digital Measures instead of the older FAR.

What follows is the timeline for the rollout this spring:

  1. Week of March 4  -- we will have the system available for faculty to sign in  and review basic demographic data. There will be some basic orientation videos available on how to sign in and interact with the software.
  1. Week of March 11 - we will have all  teaching data available.
  2. During the month of March we will have support available to answer any questions  and work with faculty one-on-one should they need help.
  3. In early May we will issue a survey to faculty asking for feedback and ways that we can improve the process for next year.

1)    Before installing Mathematica make sure you are connected to the campus network, or connected to the internet and logged into the UMBC VPN. Load the DVD into the DVD drive of your computer.  A Mathematica installation menu should appear shortly. However, if it does not launch you may have to launch the setup manually by navigating to your DVD drive and activating the setup executable. In the following instructions the necessary options are highlighted by a red border.

 

2)  Click Next to proceed.

 

3)   Click Next to create a Mathematica install directory,

 

4)  Leave the default options selected and click Next to proceed.

 

5)  Click Next to proceed.

 

6)   Click Install to begin installing Mathematica.

 

7)    Click Other ways to activate to access the activation method selection menu.

 

8)   Click Connect to a network license server.

 

9)   Enter license5.umbc.edu and click Activate to activate Mathematica.

 

10)    Check I accept the terms of the license agreement and click OK to complete Mathematica installation and Activation.
