WFDF application for IOC to recognize Flying Disc sports

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is applying for official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Your like on Facebook may be helpful for its success!
From the WFDF Facebook page:
WFDF continues to pursue our application for official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The application we submitted last year is in the process of being updated as we need to respond to a set of entirely new questions that were introduced into the process effective as of January 1, 2013. Our application will be submitted in early March and hopefully will be considered at the May 2013 Executive Board meeting.
One of the new questions relates to social media, and asks for the number of followers on Facebook and Twitter. WFDF had only introduced its Facebook page last July during the WUGC and as of last weekend only had around 1,400 "likes" on Facebook and 700 followers on Twitter. We think it would be helpful to show a significantly higher amount of interest when we submit these figures to the IOC. Accordingly, we would appreciate it if you would publicize immediately WFDF's Facebook and Twitter accounts and ask your members and social media followers and their friends to also follow WFDF's pages. For reference, these are:

Sometimes Taking a Survey = Making a Difference

There are many ways to make a difference at UMBC, especially if you are interested in shaping or changing campus life. Most of them involve hard work, planning and determination. But once in a while students have an opportunity to influence the future of campus life simply by offering their opinions. Next week, some lucky freshman and seniors have that chance, because they will be invited at random by email to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
NSSE is an annual survey administered by UMBC and other colleges and universities across the United States. UMBC's Office of Institutional Research explains that NSSE "gauges the extent to which colleges are providing experiences associated with a quality undergraduate education and the extent to which students are engaging in those educationally meaningful activities." Campus leaders have used the survey results to inform decisions about changes to programs and the curriculum. The Office of Institutional Research says that among the UMBC offerings that have been created in part based on students' responses to NSSE are first-year seminars, living-learning communities, Introduction to an Honors University courses, the new student book experience and the faculty mentor program. So if you are one of the lucky invitees, please take the survey.

- Before installing Matlab make sure you are connected to the campus network, or connected to the internet and logged into the UMBC VPN. Load the DVD into the DVD drive of your computer. A Matlab installation menu should appear shortly. However, if it does not launch you may have to launch the setup manually by navigating to your DVD drive and activating the setup executable. In the following instructions the necessary options are highlighted by a red border
- Select “Install using the Internet” and then choose "Next" to begin the installation setup
- Select “Yes” to accept the license agreement and then click "Next" to continue installing Matlab

Select “Provide File Installation Key”, enter the File Installation key which can be found on the Matlab download page in myUMBC in the text box, and click "Next" to proceed with the installing Matlab.

You must click the "Download Now" button to access the key. |
- Select “Typical”, then and click "Next" to proceed with the Matlab installation.
- Click 'Next' to designate an installation directory for Matlab. If prompted to create a directory for Matlab, choose "Yes" to proceed with the installation. If prompted, click "Yes" to create the installation directory

Browse to the location of the license file you have downloaded from myUMBC, select it, and then choose "Next" to continue activating Matlab
- Click "Install" to being installing Matlab
- Click "Finish" to complete your Matlab Installation

Researcher of the Week: Mary Li
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
When did you start conducting research at UMBC? How did you find a mentor and project to work on?
I started to conduct research at UMBC in February 2011. I was very lucky to find my mentor. During an Honors Orientation the summer before my freshman year, we were able to eat lunch with the professors of similar majors, so I met Dr.Liebman there. Later on in the year, we bumped into each other in the hallway, and I asked him about his research. I was interested in theoretical chemistry, and so he assigned a project to me.
What did you know about your field/project when you started? How did you learn what you needed to know?
When I started, I was only a freshman in General Chemistry, so I knew about formal charges and Lewis structures and that was about it. I had also taken up to Discrete Mathematics in high school, so I knew a little about calculations. Dr.Liebman taught me most of what I needed to know, including walking me through calculations and explaining different chemical theories to me.
Who do you work with on your project? Other undergraduates? graduate students? faculty?
I worked on my project with only Dr.Liebman and another assistant professor in Slovenia.
How did you decide to present at URCAD?
I decided to present at URCAD because this may be my last research experience at UMBC and I wanted to do something I've never done before.
Was the application difficult?
The application was not difficult at all. After completing the abstract, my professor and Ms.McGlynn made a few changes, and we were all set.
How did you know what to put on your poster?
Ms.McGlynn and Mr.Fick did a god job of giving us examples of what to put on our posters, and my research professor and I thought of some good examples to put on as well.
Were you nervous about explaining your work to so many people? How did it go?
I was not very nervous because I like public speaking. I just didn't want people getting lost in all of the equations on the board. I was a little surprised and very flattered that everyone seemed so interested in my project and in theoretical chemistry. I think they understood what I was saying, and I'm glad I got to expose people to this other side of chemistry.
Will you work in the lab during the 2012-2013 school year? How much time will you put in? Do you get paid for this? Academic credit?
I do not know if I will work during the 2012-2013 school year, because I will be in pharmacy school during that time.
What are your goals for after UMBC?
I will be going to University of Maryland Baltimore Pharmacy School, where I may pursue a dual degree in MBA, MPH, or PhD.
Would you suggest to other undergraduates that they find a research project?
I definitely would. It has been a great experience, and I learned to think more creatively about science.
What else are you involved in at UMBC?
At UMBC, I am involved with the Golden Key International Honor Society, Biology Tutorial Center, Community Orchestra, and Pre-pharmacy club, among other things.

Last week, a Subway store in Angers, France ran a special deal on sandwiches. The catch? It was only offered to straight couples. The franchise owner defended his stipulation with a small note at the bottom of the advertisement:
“Discrimination: No, the marriage for all law has advanced, but has yet to be ratified by the Senate. Until then, I’ll use my freedom of expression.”
After photos of the advertisement began showing up online, Subway’s corporate offices closed the franchise on Friday. The company also released a public apology on Facebook:
The SUBWAY brand is strongly committed to maintaining the values of diversity and inclusiveness in its restaurants around the world and does not endorse in any discrimination of any kind. We apologize to all those people who felt offended by the individual promotional initiative for Valentine’s Day of a restaurant in Angers, France.
According to the Huffington Post, another Subway in Angers was forced to shut down its Facebook page and denounce any association with the other franchise after it started to receive hateful comments and messages.
