Manil Suri, Mathematics, in Baltimore Magazine

thecityofdeviBaltimore magazine reviewed Manil Suri’s latest book, The City of Devi, in the February 2013 issue.  Calling the book “a preculiar love story that’s both tawdry and hopeful,” the magazine says that it is “super-charged by religion, sexuality, and the overarching political conflict.”

The magazine also posted a Q and A with the mathematics and statistics professor on their website, where they asked Suri about teaching a math class for non-math majors.  “It taught me that without at least some basic motivation on the part of the learner, it’s simply impossible to engage people in mathematics, no matter how interesting or fun you make it. The subject is difficult, and for the students who were genuinely curious (and were ready to put in the effort), it was a great class. I’ve now taught a bunch of such courses, and they’ve been essential experience for a ‘math novel’ I’m working on,” he said.

Suri will read from The City of Devi on Febraury 6 at 7 p.m. in the Library Gallery.

We got together a little late last semester, but now that we have more members and interests we're going to be doing much more this semester. I'll be graduating in the spring, so the legacy of Surf Club has to continue and grow from here! First thing is first. We have to have a little meeting/get together to meet the new faces and open up discussion for what we want to accomplish in the coming months as well as get the board members needed. Somehow we have three new members from over the break and another interest on top of that, so it's time to get the good times going. Everything is still the same: we're here to have a good time, meet good people, and go on some adventures. Bring your friends out to the first meeting because our first event will follow afterwards, details to come. Enjoy the rest of your syllabus week, we look forward to raging.

  1. Make sure that you are logged into myUMBC or UMBC's VPN
  2. Click the link to download the WinXPKey.exe file:
  3. When the navigation window pops up, click leave page
  4. Click Save File in the Opening dialog box.
  5. From the downloads dialog box, double click the program WinXPKey program after it completes downloading
  6. Click OK in the Opening Executable File dialog box
  7. Click Run from the Open File dialog box
  8. Restart your machine

A: Resident Assistant- Walker Avenue Apartments, Involvement Peer- The Student Involvement Center, and Member of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I enjoy interacting with students and helping them get involved on campus.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I enjoy life outside the classroom which consists of the many activities organized by student life, SEB and Resident Student Associations (RSA). I looked forward to most of the traditional events held on campus by RSA such as Block party, midnight breakfast, Midnight desserts and many more. The events by SEB consists of the many off-campus trips to New york, DC, six flags and semesterly events on campus. What I love most is that there is always an event going on campus to keep people connected to campus and each other.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: The choice to make UMBC yours starts with you as an individual. You might have had an amazing welcome week leader that encouraged you to do something or an RA that motivated you or even an amazing professor that inspired you continuously but the choice to become involved and get out there to meet new people, make friends and get involved on campus starts with you as an individual.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My favorite place is the atrium in the Library. The atrium is most times quiet, empty and deserted since everyone loves to study in the retriever learning center (RLC). I love to sit on one of the mini round table there or on one of the high stools where the plugs are situated. It is really nice to sip on my white chocolate mocha coffee while I study or just do work.
