NOTES:

Students must have their clickers registered in Blackboard in order to be included in the participant list.

By default, importing participant lists from Blackboard places the imported participant list in C:\My Documents\TurningPoint\Participants. In order to use the participants list in a class, you will want to save participant lists in your thumb drive. This will ensure that your participant list will be available in any classroom on campus.

At the beginning of each semester, you will need to import participant lists frequently to account for any changes in enrollment due to adds/drops. Once enrollment has stabilized for your course, you only need to use the most recently imported participant list(s) found in your Participants folder.

Open TurningPoint Anywhere

In the Launchpad, select the Participants in the create and manage section

Click Import an LMS list. This will open the LMS Integration Assistant and guide you through the process of obtaining your participant list from Blackboard

Select Blackboard from the Management System dropdown list. The Server URL is blackboard.umbc.edu

Click Continue

Type in the User Name and Password you use to access Blackboard. This is the same as your UMBC email or myUMBC account

Click Continue

Re-enter your myUMBC username and password when prompted in the UMBC WebAuth screen

Click Login and wait until you can see that you are logged in to Blackboard

Click Continue

Select Import Participant Lists and click Continue

Select the course you wish to import from the list of all of your Blackboard courses

A Save As dialog box will open. Navigate to the location where you want to save your participant list(s). In most cases, this will be your thumb drive/USB drive

Click Save to save your participant list

NOTE: The name of the participant list file includes a time/date stamp indicating when the file was saved. This is useful when saving multiple versions of the same course list (in the event that students add/drop a course, for instance).

Click OK to close the TurningPoint Anywhere dialog box indicating your participant list has been successfully imported

To load a participant list in a session select the list from the dropdown box in the TurningPoint Anywhere Participant List pane. On a PC the Participant List pane is located under the Main Menu. On a Mac the Participant List pane is accessed via the ribbon bar at the top of your screen.

How do clickers work in class?

There are many ways instructors can use the clicker technology. PowerPoint is only one example of integrated tools.

During lecture, your teacher poses a question within a PowerPoint slide in front of the classroom

Use your clicker to respond with your own answer. Keypad displays solid green for 3 seconds when response is received as verification for a clear, visual confirmation that your response has been received and recorded

Your response is sent to a wireless receiver, collected and then sent to the classroom computer

Within seconds, you’ll see the entire class results on the PowerPoint slide in front of the room

Pay attention to the round light on your clicker for feedback.

A green light, that means your answer was successfully received.

A red light means your answer was NOT received.

A yellow light (blinking multiple times) means your response is sending.

A blinking orange light while polling is open means you need to reset the channel.

If the clicker light is very faint or weak and you cannot reset the channel, you may need to change the batteries. Get new batteries from the location where you purchased your clicker.

Is ‘Obamacare’ bad for Small Business?

Thanks to TIMES Business & Money

Chances are you haven’t read all thousand pages of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

If you did chances are you are one in a million. Give yourself a high-five.

For the rest of us slackers, we thought we’d take a shot at explaining just how ‘Obamacare’ will effect small businesses when it is fully implemented next year (an area of great contention).

To begin, a small business is defined as any privately held business with between 100 and 500 employees and makes no more than $21 million per year.

The basic criticism of Obamacare is that it will make employers think twice about hiring. That is due to the tax penalty Obamacare could inflict on small businesses who refuse offer health insurance.

The penalty is called the free rider penalty: if a small business that does not provide health insurance has more than 50 employees, one of whom receives federally subsidised insurance on their own, they must pay a $2000 penalty for every employee (deducting the first 30). So a company with 51 employees would have to pay $42,000 per year in additional taxes.

This could be a problem for businesses that have fewer than 50 employees but are looking to expand. They would have to run the math and see if it is more costly to purchase a health plan or to simply pay the fine.

This is ultimately a mandate for companies with more than 50 employees. The result could be companies deciding it is too costly to expand or looking for ways to skirt the law like shifting employees to part-time.

As it stands 96 percent of small businesses are under this threshold. That does mean 200,000 businesses have a rather unpleasant decision to make.

But for businesses with less than 25 employees making an average salary of $50,000 or less there is a Small Business Health Care Tax Credit that will cover 35 percent of the premiums and that number will jump to 50 percent in 2014.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the law will save small businesses $40 billion by 2019. But as we wait for states to set up their exchanges or not, there is still the factor of uncertainty and confusion going forward. Two factors that never bode well for business.

Overall, it doesn’t seem like the ACA will do much to harm small businesses. However, there will be some caught in the crossfire. What do you think?
