commonvision Spring Hours

commonvision's spring operating hours will remain in place until Friday, May 22. We are currently open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and are closed weekends and UMBC Holidays. 

Wednesday, May 13

commonvision, UMBC Student Design and Print Center will close early on Study Day (May 13). commonvision's hours Wednesday, May 13 will be 9 – 11 a.m. We are closing early to recognize our seniors and student staff. All inquiries after close can be emailed to commonvision@umbc.edu and will be addressed on Thursday, May 14!

Saturday, May 23 – Sunday, May 31: CLOSED

commonvision will be closed, along with the UMBC campus for Memorial Day. We will remain closed for the rest of the week following Memorial Day. 

Monday, June 1: commonvision will re-open with our summer operating hours.

Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Closed weekends and during UMBC closures.

Help Us Celebrate 30 Years of IMDA!

This year marks 30 years of artists graduating from the Intermedia and Digital Arts MFA program at UMBC. Please join us in celebrating innovative creative research and cutting edge art with a free evening of art, music, food and fun!

Our current grad student studios will be open alongside featured artwork by alums, a Panel Talk featuring IMDA alumni Cyriaco Lopes (02), Marian Glebes (09) and Mollye Bendell (18) starting at 4pm, and delicious catered food by Mera Kitchen Collective. And we will announce the winner of the 2026 Dr. Kathy O’Dell IMDA Award!

When: May 16th, 3pm-6pm, The Alumni Panel talk begins at 4PM.

James Allen (616/MSU) is among the four scientists featured in the latest NASA GSFC Early Career Scientist Spotlights. The NASA Goddard Association of Postdoctoral and Early Career Scientists (NGAPS+) compiles these spotlights monthly, highlighting research, motivation, and accomplishments across four divisions of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate: Earth Sciences, Astrophysics, Heliophysics, and Planetary Sciences. 

Dr. Allen provides informative and insightful responses to the interviewer, such as this aspect of enjoying his work: "I also love the cross-pollination. There’s such a wide range of expertise that ideas travel in surprising directions. For example, I’ve been able to incorporate workflows that astrophysicists use to study galaxy formation for my own ocean remote sensing. And I’ve even had the chance to help out with modeling cosmic dust in our solar system with my own ocean particle models, which sounds like a big stretch until you realize that in both cases, we’re just trying to infer the properties of tiny particles from the way they interact with light!"

Two weeks ago, Friday, April 24th, The Shriver Center's Community Engagement Team hosted an evening event for our Shriver Living Learning Community (LLC) to honor our Shriver LLC student leadership, outgoing 12th cohort and incoming 13th. Over the course of the year, they have lived, learned, and served together on and off campus. Highlights of the year include taking UNIV 101 together, playing Monster Mini-golf, making jewelry, communal baking, Cultural Night celebrations, visiting Washington DC, watching the superbowl/Bad Bunny Concert, creating podcasts about The Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver Family history and legacy, creating reflective Digital Stories, and interviewing the 27th cohort The LLC.

The outgoing leadership students are four year Shriver LLC Community member and Resident Assistant Vunnathi Ankem '26 and Peer Mentors Angelie Colachagua, Rishika Bandi, Jahanavi Dhavala, Joseph Hartlove, and Riya Koshy. Yonu Akanji will return to the floor as our Resident Assistant. 

Many operations and logistics went into the behind the scenes planning. We appreciate Keynote Speakers Dr. Ken Baron, Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Advising and Student Success, Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising highlighting student success tips for every year in college and Dr. Joby Taylor, Assistant Vice Provost and Shriver Center co-leader, sharing the importance of reflective practice and our connection to Sargent Shriver's legacy as we move through experiential learning.

Wrapping up its 26th year, The Shriver LLC proves to continue to be a mentoring- focused, supportive environment for transitioning into college and professional relationships. This week, rising Peer Mentors and Staff have been earnestly interviewing high school seniors for (the 27th) our next cohort of Shriver LLC members who will move onto the floor in August 2026.
