U.S. News Again Recognizes UMBC as Leader in Innovation and Undergraduate Teaching

We are delighted to share the news that UMBC has been recognized again as a national leader in innovation and undergraduate teaching in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges guide.

For the fourth year in a row, UMBC tops the U.S. News ranking of “Up-and-Coming” national universities, a place we share this year with George Mason University.

U.S. News also ranks UMBC eighth on a list of the national universities that excel in undergraduate teaching, tied with Duke University, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Chicago, and the University of Notre Dame. As Americans consider the value of a college degree, this recognition is a reminder of what we all know firsthand – public universities can be exceptional.

When U.S. News says “Up-and-Coming” it is talking about universities that consistently find new ways to improve students’ educational experiences, that are entrepreneurial, and that are models for others. Specifically, the magazine asks presidents, provosts, and admissions deans all over the country to identify institutions that have “made the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities.”

In short: They are looking for leaders. Congratulations to all our faculty, staff, and students who make UMBC just such a place.

Celebrate Extraordinary UMBC Public Service

Beth Wells is Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at UMBC.

Do you know a UMBC staff member whose outstanding contributions as a community change agent deserve to be recognized? The Provost’s Office and Staff Awards Committee are delighted to invite students, faculty, and staff to nominate a staff member for a University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award in the category of “extraordinary public service.” The criteria for this award are:

  • The individual has demonstrated personal dedication to a project or cause that has definitively improved the greater community
  • The staff member has, in a collaborative and sustained manner throughout his/her career, made a difference in the larger community
  • There is a sustained record over a period of years of the staff member making contributions through his/her role in the University (rather than as a private citizen)

We hope you will help us to recognize the important contributions of staff members working to improve the quality of life for others at UMBC or in the larger community. Winners of Board of Regents awards receive $1,000 and a plaque, as well as recognition at UMBC’s spring faculty and staff awards ceremony. You can help create a ripple effect of community engagement by nominating a staff member whose creativity, skill, and commitment as a change agent offer a model to all of us in the UMBC community.

•    All candidates must have a minimum 2.8 GPA, at least sophomore standing.
•    Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
•    Problem solving, project management and communication skills are all necessary as is the ability to operate in a team environment.
•    Must have ability to generate accurate and concise technical reports. Should have computer skills in MS Excel, MS Word. Basic knowledge of MS Visio and Auto CAD.

I am a Program Coordinator this year for Health Leads at UMBC. We are currently recruiting volunteers for the Fall Semester. 

Health Leads (formally known as Project HEALTH) is an organization that seeks to break the link between poverty and poor health. Though national in scope, Health Leads takes a local approach to finding innovative solutions to the health care crisis.

We mobilize college students to work in urban community clinics and provide low-income families in Baltimore with access to a wide variety of resources. Health Leads volunteers work closely with patients to navigate the resource landscape in order to address basic needs such as employment, housing, food, utilities, etc. We also work closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that complements the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival. We currently have mostly Pre-med students and HAPP majors, but would like to fill out our team with Pre-Nursing students.This program is good for learning how to conduct good patient-provider interactions and provides an opportunity for someone with no medical experience to gain some exposure to patients and healthcare providers in the medical clinic. The volunteer is expected to commit to 5-6 hours of time each week (attend a 3-hour clinic shift of your choice , a one-hour weekly organizational meeting, and 1-2 more hours on case support according to the student's schedule) to Health Leads. Additionally, the opportunity to shadow physicians, and Nurse-Practitioners is offered every semester. **Mandatory training will take place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday September 15-16 from 10am-4pm in the Public Policy building.
