The internship is with Gilchrest Hospice Care in Hunt Valley, MD. The internship is part-time (about 8-10
hours per week) and is unpaid. Potential credit is available depending
on your major.
About the Program
Gilchrist Hospice Care engaged in a partnership with Nkoaranga Lutheran
Hospital's Palliative Care Program in Tanzania beginning in 2009. Our
goal is to support Nkoaranga in their efforts to provide quality,
compassionate hospice and palliative care to the over 800 patients that
they serve in the villages, more than 90% who suffer from HIV/AIDS. Our
partnership is sponsored by the Foundations for Hospices in Sub-Saharan
Africa, through the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Gilchrist Hospice Care is committed to raising $60,000 for Nkoaranga in
fiscal year 2013. These funds will pay the salaries of 5 staff members,
stipends for 40 volunteers, operational expenses, scholarships for
children, emergency housing repair and charity care for
hospitalizations. A
Internship Duties
UMBC intern would have educational opportunities in
the following areas: researching grants and foundations that could fund
some of the above expenses; writing grant applications; researching
major donors to acquire an ambulance for Nkoaranga; researching
educational opportunities to share expertise with Nkoaranga staff; event
planning and other creative opportunities that may arise. This
internship would give the student a multicultural experience; the
opportunity to learn about hospice and palliative care on the national
and local levels, as well as in Tanzania. An extensive administrative
and clinical orientation program to hospice in the US is incorporated
into the learning experience.
