Complete this form to get your SGA stoles and cords
It's almost that time... please complete the attached Google form so that we can order the proper amount of cords and stoles for our SGA leaders! If you have ever served as an officer or appointed member in SGA, you will receive regalia.
Only complete this form if you are graduating in MAY 2025 and have held a position within SGA. Students will only receive a stole OR cords, not both.Please complete this form by April 30, 2025 at Noon.

Randi Williams, Ph.D., is an AI educator and tinkerer passionate about empowering others to responsibly use AI for positive social impact. In her daily role, she works with AI researchers, policymakers, and everyday changemakers to address tech misconceptions and mitigate harm. Previously, she developed K-12 AI curricula and platforms for the Day of AI and MIT RAISE initiatives, making AI instruction available to thousands of educators worldwide.
Dr. Williams helps equip researchers, policymakers, and grassroots changemakers to responsibly use AI for meaningful social impact. She has spearheaded initiatives like the MIT RAISE AI Playground and Day of AI, which have made AI instruction available to thousands of educators worldwide. Her groundbreaking work on social robot learning companions (PopBots) and grade school AI + ethics curricula, (How to Train Your Robot) have garnered recognition and accolades from leading organizations such as Microsoft Research, LEGO, and the National Science Foundation and have been featured in prominent media outlets, including The Atlantic, Wired, and MIT Technology Review.
Dr. Williams earned her Ph.D. (’24) and Masters (’18) from MIT in the Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab. She earned her Bachelor’s (’16) in Computer Engineering as a Meyerhoff Scholar, Honors College student, and CWIT affiliate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she worked with Dr. Nilanjan Banerjee in the Mobile, Pervasive, and Sensor Systems Laboratory on the Inviz project and Flex Gloves projects and founded HackUMBC. She is a founding director of the Boston Chapter of Black in Robotics. Previously, Dr. Williams worked at Microsoft Research, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, and MIT Lincoln Lab.

UMBC Research Climate Survey (deadline extended)
Dear Colleagues,
The Research and Creative Achievement (RCA) Council has extended the deadline for
the UMBC Research Climate Survey to April 22nd.
The more responses received, the more comprehensive the picture these responses will provide. This survey is completely designed by faculty. The council's goal is to help advocate for our UMBC RCA community, to ensure our community's concerns are conveyed to the administration, and to request any concerns be addressed.

The International Cyber Security–Center of Excellence (INCS-CoE) hosts this yearly CTF cybersecurity competition in different countries to provide an opportunity for students to work together as international teams to solve interesting CTF challenges. This competition allows the participating students to learn new skills, socialize, and promote international collaboration and friendships.

New Alumni Spotlight! Zaira Girala Munoz ('22) Discusses Graduate School at the Ohio State University
Zaira Girala Munoz ('22) is a former English major who is now a PhD student in English at the Ohio State University.
I’ve always loved writing, but it was at UMBC that I found my passion for rhetoric while majoring in English on the communication and technology track. I transferred to UMBC from Howard Community College, and it immediately solidified my decision to major in English. My time at UMBC was marked by the onset of the COVID pandemic and the 2020 protests. My support networks, including the McNair Scholars Program and professors I had in English, made me feel equipped intellectually to process and adapt to these pivotal moments, a skill that’s invaluable in the current moment. My time in the English Department also helped me find areas of research I am still passionate about today. My current research on disability rhetorics in graduate student narratives began as an essay I wrote in ENGL 671. I was able to take this class and begin a more intensive project as part of the accelerated BA/MA program in English, which also prepared me for the rigor of graduate seminars.
After graduating from UMBC, I started grad school (fully funded) at The Ohio State University. I am currently a third year MA/PhD student in English, in the Writing, Rhetoric and Literacy program. I’m also the president of GAMHAA, a grad student mental health organization on campus and Chief of Staff for The Graduate Student Council. Having earned my MA last spring, I am currently finishing coursework and starting to prep for candidacy exams. I’ve taught first-year composition at OSU for two semesters and I’m currently a graduate writing program assistant. I’ve really enjoyed getting to see the administrative side of running a writing program and supporting instructors who are teaching the class for the first time. My research areas are institutional rhetoric, rhetorics of health and medicine and disability studies. I would not have gotten here if it were not for the support of professors I had in the department at UMBC, and being a McNair scholar. I am especially grateful to Professors Brooks, McCarthy, Holladay, Patton (MCS), Mata-McMahon (Education), and Jones Lewis (Ancient Studies) for encouraging me to grow so much as a writer, researcher and thinker and for being some of the kindest people I’ve worked with.

UMBC receive $3.8M DARPA award to assess the feasibility of scientific claims
A multidisciplinary team led by UMBC COEIT researchers was awarded $3.8M from DARPA's SciFy: Scientific Feasibility program to explore new computational methods for assessing the feasibility of scientific claims. The team is led by CSEE Professor Frank Ferraro and includes UMBC faculty Tejas Gokhale (CSEE) and Tyler Josephson (CBEE), as well as colleagues from Stony Brook University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Cambridge.
The key problem to be addressed is developing a process that can break down claims in a given scientific domain into their constituent components that can then be assessed. During the 32 month program, the researchers will develop and test their tools on three leading areas of scientific research: materials science, AI, and quantum computing. These domains were chosen to represent a progression in scientific complexity.
