SP2013 Lab & Lecture Hall Software Request Deadline is 10/31

In order to load all lab and lecture hall computers with our standard set of software (known as an "image"), all requests for additions/changes for Spring or Winter 2013  must be received by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Software requested for the fall semester will be carried over to the spring semester.

To be added to the lab & lecture hall image, DoIT must have the following:

Please submit an RT ticket containing the required information or contact 410.455.3838 and a Technology Support Center (TSC) staff member will assist you. If the request is not received by the deadline, there is no guarantee the requested software will be made available.

For an instructor-only demo of software, please use a laptop. If you don't have a laptop, you can reserve and pick up one at AV Services (020 ENGR Bldg).

If you need software installed on the lab image for a one-time purpose (for example, a 2-day workshop in which all users need access to the software), the request should be submitted no less than six (6) weeks prior to the first lab reservation for that class. The software will be removed once you are done.

An e-mail will be sent to the requester once the software is installed, typically 1-2 week(s) before the first use of the software; faculty/instructors need to then test the software to ensure everything is working as expected for class. Support for the software is the responsibility of the instructor or department who requested that the software be installed.

Again, proof of purchase and/or license must be provided for as many copies as will be needed for the students in the class. We cannot install software without appropriate proof of licensing.

Although DoIT will make a reasonable effort to get all software packages to work, we can not guarantee that they will. Some packages may not function because of the network, computer hardware, and lab setup. DoIT cannot be held responsible for software that does not work by class time. In accordance with the Blackboard Course Retention Policy, all Blackboard courses older than Fall 2006 will be deleted. DoIT has scheduled this removal for Friday, August 24, 2012.

Instructors are encouraged to download and keep a copy of the Grade Center for any affected courses. Instructors may also archive an entire course, and keep a local copy for their records. Be aware though that only DoIT system administrators can "restore" an archived course on the UMBC Blackboard production server.

Anthony Wutoh ’87, biochemistry and molecular biology, has been named dean of the Howard University College of Pharmacy, the university reports. He previously served as associate dean of the college.

Wutoh, a registered pharmacist, is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of the college’s programs. He also serves as  co-director of the University’s Center of Excellence and director of the Center for Minority Health Services Research.

As dean, he plans to “make sure that we’re positioned as one of the top pharmacy schools in the country in terms of the quality of our education, our research and our service to the community and the nation,” the university reports.

Alumnus Bryan Kelly ’92, economics, won reelection as Chair of the Harford Community College Board of Trustees, according to local news website The Dagger.

Kelly, who is also managing partner and owner of The Kelly Group, has served on the board since 2005 and is also co-chair of the Board of Directors of the UMBC Economics Visitors Council. Other current positions include President of the Maryland Association of Community Colleges; the chairman of the board of the Academy of Finance, Harford County Public Schools; and membership of the Harford Leadership Academy Alumni Association at Harford Community College.

He was named the 2007 UMBC Economics Alumnus of the Year, as well as being named a member of the 2010 Leadership Maryland Class, among other achievements. He was also an alumni committee member throughout UMBC’s Exceptional by Example giving campaign, which ended last year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-Undergraduate candidates from UMBC must be between their sophomore and senior years, attending full-time or part-time.  Graduate students must be enrolled in the university full-time or part-time.
-Students must be enrolled in an internship, independent study, co-op or zero credit practicum class.
-Student must have a professor’s recommendation.  
-Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
-Students must be citizens of the United States.
-Students must be able to pass a Federal Bureau of Investigation Background Investigation to receive a Secret Security Clearance.
-All students must provide proof they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

SECURITY CLEARANCE
    The selected student will be granted a National Agency Check with Local Agency Checks and Credit Check (NACLC) security clearance.  Upon successful adjudication for the NACLC clearance, the applicant will be given a Secret security clearance with escorted access to FBI space.  

Students with the skills and interest in the following projects are encouraged to apply:

MCAC blog/website support – The website is intended to provide the public and law enforcement with timely and relevant updates.  Using Google Reader, the student will monitor open source screening (RSS feeds) to post on the website items of interest about terrorism, gangs, crime and critical infrastructure.

Writing and editing - Researcher/writer/editor to assist researching and writing intelligence assessments.  Write contributions to a daily product.  Topics include MD’s maritime assessments; Critical Infrastructure/Key Resources threat-vulnerability-risk assessments; situational awareness handouts; and help writing and editing ad hoc products.  Proficiency in Excel and Power Point preferred.  

Marketing  (1 with graphic design specialization) – Develop the Fusion Liaison Outreach program; create and conduct surveys and assist with other marketing efforts; create customer profiles that can be used to filter communications products and target information to specific preferences; develop brochures, fact sheets and other handouts.  

Education/Curriculum Development/Training   - Develop curriculum for trainings to law enforcement and the public about suspicious activities, terrorism and crimes;  create and conduct scenario-based tabletop and live exercises to regularly assess information sharing capabilities;  refine a Training and Professional Development plan for detailees.  

Human Resources – Develop tool to track volunteer hours and develop performance metrics for detailees.   Work with education intern on refining a Training and Professional Development plan for detailees.

Information Requirements/Data Manager – Create a formal process to identify, document and prioritize customers’ intelligence requirements.   Establish goals and objective for collecting, producing and sharing information.  Review and consider relevant national intelligence requirements as provided by DHS and the FBI.  Develop a communications strategic plan.  

Statistician – Multivariable analysis of law enforcement data and open source data to prepare statistical reports for policy makers and the public.  Data will be of the type collected for the Uniform Crime Reports.  Topics for analysis may include assessments of violent crime, weapons use, gang activity, offender data and/or hate crimes; and the analysis will explain their effects on Maryland. GIS - Facilitate the integration, sharing, analysis, mapping, and virtual presentation of secure Law Enforcement/ Homeland Security data.   Inherent to this project is the coordination between National Capital Region (NCR) Fusion Centers, Emergency Managers, and Law Enforcement agencies to ensure geospatially enabled Public Safety data and resources are shared across the NCR. Goals include identification of priority Homeland Security Law Enforcement datasets, mutual sharing, and development of joint geospatial projection within jurisdictions.  Emphasis will be on information that can be shared, geospatially analyzed, and provided to planners, Incident Commanders, or investigators in near real-time.  Flex/Silverlight development capabilities is preferred but not necessary.

Public Health Intern - Work in partnership with other fusion center analysts and partner agencies to understand and identify links between terrorism/criminal information and indicators and warnings of threats to human, animal, agricultural, food, and environmental health or Public Health and Health Care (PH/HC) critical infrastructure and key resources.  Systems that could provide early warning of health threats and potential bioterrorism events may include, but are not limited to, NBIS Biosurveillance Common Operating Picture (BCOP), BioWatch, and syndromic surveillance systems (such as CDC’s BioSense).   PH/HC partners should identify and inform the fusion center of relevant databases, systems, and networks available from PH/HC federal, state, local and private sector organizations to maximize information sharing and analysis that relate to health.

Anthony Wutoh ’87, biochemistry and molecular biology, has been named dean of the Howard University College of Pharmacy, the university reports. He previously served as associate dean of the college.

Wutoh, a registered pharmacist, is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of the college’s programs. He also serves as  co-director of the University’s Center of Excellence and director of the Center for Minority Health Services Research.

As dean, he plans to “make sure that we’re positioned as one of the top pharmacy schools in the country in terms of the quality of our education, our research and our service to the community and the nation,” the university reports.

After graduating from UMBC, Wutoh received his Ph.D. from University of Maryland, Baltimore.
