Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. but their hearts are far from me.

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

Reflection:

There are times that we may want to get away from family or even reject family - subtly or overtly. There are many reasons why we would want to not help or be with family, and some of these reasons may even be ‘good.’ But one can never use ‘God’ as an excuse to hurt or deprive family of the love that God has for them. Interacting with family and trying to love them can get pretty difficult at times, even religious in our struggles, but God’s love will always become clear to us and empower us to relate with family His way.

Question: What’s one part new media, one part gaming, and one part nerd party?

Answer: It’s Intervention, Maryland’s only “Internet convention.”

For the third year in a row, Intervention brings together digital media enthusiasts for three-days of workshops, panels, educational content, children’s programming, board and video gaming, Live Action Roleplaying, musical performances, and more. This year, it’s held in Rockville’s Hilton Hotel from September 21-23.  

“[co-founder] James Harkenell and I wanted to put together an event that would compliment the existing print-centric conventions-we wanted to showcase the creators who use the Internet as their primary publishing method. We felt that web creators needed their own space. We’re giving them that with Intervention,” says Onezumi Hartsein on the website. She’s the creator of a couple of online comics: My Annoying Life and Stupid & Insane Defenders Against Chaos.  

The guest lineup is still being compiled, but confirmed guests include: Daniella Pineda from CollegeHumor.com, A.J. Rosa, creator of My Life With Sega, Christopher Baldwin, creator of Spacetrawler, Cinematic For the People, a “live-action bad movie riffing experience”, and Cosplay Burlesque. Former UMBC track and field standout and NCAA champion Cleopatra Borel ’02, INDS, is competing in her third Olympic Games for her native Trinidad and Tobago, once again in the shot put. Borel placed 17th in 2008 in Beijing after finishing in 10th at the 2004 Games in Athens.

“We are very proud of Cleopatra and all that she has accomplished in her career,” said UMBC head track and field coach David Bobb ’02, health administration and policy. “We wish her the absolute best as she continues to represent Trinidad and Tobago and UMBC is the best possible way.”

The first ever NCAA champion in UMBC history, Borel, the lone Retriever in London this summer, holds the school record in both the indoor (17.50m, 57’5”) and outdoor (16.44m, 53’11.25”) shot put , the weight throw (18.03m (59’2”) and the hammer throw (51.28m (168’3”). Her indoor shot put school record distance was at the time her personal-best and won her the 2002 NCAA title. In addition to her championship, Borel was a three-time All-American during her time in Baltimore.

Borel qualified for her third Olympic Games back in June when she bested the field at the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Trials with a toss of 17.98m (59’0”).

“A lot of the credit can go to former throws coach Brian King,” Bobb said. “He really worked hard with her and set her on this path.”

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London open on Fri., July 27 with the Opening Ceremony and continue through Sun., Aug. 12. The women’s shot put competition will take place on Wed., Aug. 6 and will be held at the Olympic Stadium.
