AccessMT is a self-contained hardware prototype consisting of a projector, computer, infrared lights, and a modified camera. Users can interact with AccessMT using simple touches, gestures, and tagged objects. The table tracks touch by using a PlayStation Eye Camera modified to capture only infrared light. The inside of the table contains four infrared lamps in order to create a consistent swath of infrared light. The inside walls are painted white for even distribution and diffusion of light. When a user touches the glass top, his or her finger reflects back infrared light and creates a bright spot. Using the open source software packages Community Core Vision and BSQSimulator, we are able to track a user’s fingers and translate each of them into touch events. AccessMT builds upon prior multi-touch tables, but was designed to enable it to be easily adapted for use by people with disabilities. This presentation describes the challenges we have encountered and overcome in developing this new prototype.

This work was funded through an Undergraduate Research Assistantship Support (URAS) Award from the UMBC Office of Research Administration.

President Hrabowski named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World

TIME named President Freeman Hrabowski to the 2012 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The full list and related tributes appear in the April 30 issue of TIME, available on newsstands on Thursday, April 19, and now at time.com/time100.

The list, now in its ninth year, recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals.

As TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel has said of the list in the past, “The TIME 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world, it’s not a list of the smartest people in the world, it’s a list of the most influential people in the world. They’re scientists, they’re thinkers, they’re philosophers, they’re leaders, they’re icons, they’re artists, they’re visionaries. People who are using their ideas, their visions, their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people.”

President Hrabowski told The Baltimore Sun that he accepts the recognition on behalf of the whole campus. “My success and the campus’ success are the same,” Hrabowski said. “People appreciate what we’ve done at the university, and I enjoy telling the story.”

Hrabowski also told The Sun that he considers the TIME honor a recognition for universities and their leaders nationwide.

“I think we often take for granted colleges and universities,” he said. “At UMBC, we don’t take it for granted, we celebrate it. That celebration gives people hope. People need to hope that we can educate all kinds of students, and those students will go on to lead our nation.”

FREEMAN HRABOWSKI NAMED ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD (BALTIMORE, 4/18/2012) -- TIME named Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC, to the 2012 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Follow @TIME for updates about the list on Twitter (Hashtag is #TIME100) and at Facebook.com/TIME.

Day Three: Be Careful to Obey All the Law

Joshua 1:7-9 (NIV)

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Reflection:

To lead an entire nation of people after the death of Moses, arguably one of the great biblical figures in the bible, was no easy task. The pressure and responsibility, not to mention all the adversity, would have forced many to crumble. But Joshua received well the words of God, which brought encouragement, life, blessing, hope, strength, and boldness. Part of receiving well from God is receiving well from God’s Word.

Response:

Let’s recommit ourselves anew to be found in God’s Word so we too can live in the abundance of God’s blessing for us, as we go to class, work, and interact with others. May we receive afresh that God’s Word gives us life, and let’s ask Him to open our eyes and hearts even more to the truths in His Word.
