Romans 8:14-17 (NIV)

¹⁴For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. ¹⁵The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” ¹⁶The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. ¹⁷Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Reflection

When we change jobs our relationship with the old and new employers change. We are no longer obligated to one and we enter into new obligations with the other. To an even greater extent, our allegiance to old ways have been broken and we enter into a new way to live. But this is not just a trading of one master for another. The nature of our relationship with God is completely different. We used to live as slaves. In contrast, now we live as sons and daughters. We are children who by the Spirit’s help cry out to God as Father, children who participate in the work that the Father is doing, children who are not left up to their own devices in how to live, but can follow the Spirit of God in us.

Responding to the Transmission

We now have relationship with God, a relationship that is totally unlike the old. It doesn’t make sense to live in old ways, nor does it work. Everything is different, and thanks to God we are not left on our own to figure this out. He gives us His Spirit to lead us, to help us fully embrace and live in this new relationship. Let’s cry out Abba, Father and welcome His work in and through our lives. Let’s receive today the Spirit’s powerful help, leaving the old behind and living in the new. God has much to give us!

Come out and join us at the annual PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP May “Friends and Family” Cookout and Celebration of Graduates. Graduate students and postdocs from UMBC, UM College Park, UMB, and other campuses within the University System of Maryland are invited. PROMISE students may bring guests … any family members or friends who have supported your journey in graduate school. PROMISE alumni, faculty, SSI Mentors-in-Residence, and “Friends of PROMISE” are invited to attend.

• The event is free. It will span from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
• The “Celebration of Grads Ceremony” will be held in the park at 3:00 PM.
• Attire: casual.

Craig Saper, associate professor of language, literacy and culture, will participate in “Digital Legacies of the Avant-Garde,” a two-day international conference that examines the continuing influence of avant-garde concepts and practices on contemporary digital culture. The conference will be held in the New School in New York on April 20.

Saper will participate in a panel entitled “The Legacy of the AvantGarde between Generative Art and Networked Art.”

Last week the Center for Women in Information Technology (CWIT) held their second annual “Spring into Leadership,” event.

The event which is designed to provide networking opportunities to women majoring in engineering or information technology had 120 registrants up 23 registrants from last year. Registrants included students as well as 25 Industry professionals from Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Harris Corporation, NSA, BAE Systems, UserWorks, JHU/APL, CyberPoint International, General Electric’s Middle River Aircraft Systems, and AAI.

Wendy Martin, a vice president at Harris Corporation, gave the keynote address focusing on her story and the importance of diversity for organizational success. “The fact that you are different from your peers should not be something you shy away from or something that  you shield from others. It’s a gift, especially in the workplace,” she emphasized to the women majoring in engineering and IT at the event.

Following the keynote the participants were split into networking pairs and then groups.
“By all accounts the event this year was a tremendous success because of the teamwork of the student planning committee,” says Susan Martin, Associate Director of CWIT. “This event really contributes to the sense of community among women in the College of Engineering and Information Technology.”

Spring into Leadership was made possible with support from Lockheed Martin Corporation, the 2011-2012 sponsor of the CWIT Affiliates Program, the UMBC Student Government Association, and the UMBC Graduate Student Association. The program was implemented by student leaders from the CWIT Student Council, the Information Systems Council of Majors (ISCOM) the student chapters of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) graduate student organization. 

Sara Patenaude ’11 M.A., historical studies, has won the Arnold Prize for Outstanding Writing on Baltimore’s History.

The Arnold Prize is named for Joseph L. Arnold, a professor of history at UMBC who died in 2004.  He was a vital and important member of the faculty for three and a half decades, as well as a leading historian of urban and planning history. He also played an active and often leading role with a variety of private and public historical institutions in the Baltimore area, and at his death was hailed as the “dean of Baltimore historians.” The Arnold Prize rewards outstanding research on Baltimore history.

Patenaude’s essay, entitled “Playing Fair: The Fight for Interracial Athletics in Baltimore,” is a chapter from her master’s thesis at UMBC.   The prize, which comes with a $500 award, is presented by the Baltimore City Historical Society.
