Stories from Linehan Art Scholars

With the goal of building a greater sense of community in the Linehan Artist Scholars Program, students in the Linehan Freshman Seminar class participated in a Digital Story Workshop over a four week period. Their stories reflect the broad concerns of young talented artists as they begin their university careers in the arts. The stories speak of family, creative passions, and the search for identity in a complicated and fractured world.

Luke 13:22-25 (NIV)

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

Reflection:

Famous German theologian and WWII martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, spoke about living a life through the narrow way,

“There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future.”

God is preparing a great feast for all His children. But some who think they will be at the table won’t be, and those who think they don’t qualify will enjoy the great feast. As we hear Christ’s words in this passage we need to take heed: God has given us a life to live that really matters, and that life came by Christ alone. But because it is a life that really matters, then the choices we make and what we decide to do or not do really matters too. In other words, we are to live this life walking on the narrow road – the road that really matters.

Responding to Transmission:

When facing life challenges, entering through the narrow door may not be the easiest choice, but it is the choice that really matters.We can walk forward through that door by trusting in God and depending only on His grace and power.Christ set the ultimate example of how to walk and live on the narrow road.Spend time in prayer asking for the Spirit’s empowering to help you stay on the blessed narrow road of following Christ.

Here's some important info for those helping us out at this show: 

Getting horses ready the day before (Friday, March 30th):
We need your help cleaning tack, clipping, bathing and generally prepping the 5 horses we are taking to this show!
If anyone needs a ride, I will be leaving campus at 3 PM and can give you one. Please plan to meet me at 3 PM on Friday at Commons Circle!
Please also let me know if you plan on riding with me, so I have an idea of how many people I'm taking.

The day of:
Team members should plan on meeting in the Child Care Lot at 6:45 AM to leave. If you are able to give rides to team members, we'd really appreciate it. Please let me know if you can give rides at this time.
Carpooling for club members will meet at the Child Care Lot at 8 AM to leave. Please let me know if you will need a ride or if you are available to provide rides to club members! I will be stopping for breakfast at McDonalds (if people are on time and there is no traffic).
Unfortunately, we cannot provide rides in the middle of the day for club members. If you signed up for an afternoon shift, either plan on driving yourself (or work out carpooling with another club member), or plan on getting a ride for the morning shift too. We'll be able to find something for you to do in the morning, or you can bring homework and wait for your shift.
There is a food vendor at the show, but it's somewhat expensive and there aren't any vegetarian options (in case anyone besides me is). So please either plan on bringing money or pack a lunch.

If you signed up for something and you know now that you cannot fulfill your shift, please please please let us know ASAP. We will need to find someone to fill your shift for you. If you fail to show up, we have your phone number. Expect a minimum of 40 voicemails from a minimum of 5 different numbers!

Bake Sale:  Please plan on bringing a baked good for us to sell. Bake sales at IHSA shows tend to do very well! If you need to drop it off to me the day before the show, please let me know!

The following day is Regionals at University of Mary Washington. We currently have 2 team members who have qualified to go on to Regionals (Go Jen and Drew!). The competition known informally as the Final Four, will be held March 30 to April 1 in Herndon, Va., at the Westin Dulles Hotel. Teams qualified for the match back in December, during the 2011 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship. UMBC came in second with 5 points, behind the University of Texas at Dallas (six points) and ahead of Texas Tech and New York University (with 4.5 points each). All four teams advanced to the Final Four. Since 2001, when the Final Four began, UMBC has captured the title six out of eleven times, but came in fourth last year when one of their key players was battling illness. "The teams this year are closely matched,” says Alan Sherman, UMBC chess director. UMBC’s team will be led by Leonid Kritz, an International Grandmaster from Germany. Giorgi Margvelashvili, an International Grandmaster from the Republic of Georgia, will play on the second board. Sasha Kaplan, an International Master from Israel, will play on the third board. Sabina Foisor, an International Woman Grandmaster from Romania, will play on the fourth board. “It will definitely be a difficult competition,” says Sabina Foisor, “as four of the best universities in the country will compete against each other in the fight for the President’s cup.” Foisor, who is no stranger to competition, is a member of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team and was a finalist in the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship in 2011. The players, all on chess scholarships at UMBC, not only have exceptional chess skills, but also sport strong academic records.
