Mrinalini Sinha Lecture on the Global Ramifications of Abolishing Indentured Labor (4/18)

Mrinalini Sinha, associate professor of history and women’s studies at Penn State, will address these questions in a Social Sciences Forum lecture on April 18, 4:00 p.m. in the UMBC library, 7th floor. The talk is co-sponsored by UMBC’s Asian Studies …

Donald Norris, Public Policy, in the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun

UPDATE: DoIT staffed installed the patch for the Blackboard wiki error during the downtime on Friday, April 20, and the wiki tool is now functioning normally.

UPDATE: Blackboard has verified that the wiki error we are experiencing is a known issue (LRNSI-5667) and is due to a Java resource leak which results in unexpected behavior of the tool. DoIT is currently testing the patches provided by Blackboard, in anticipation of installing them on the production server Friday night.

    -------------

DoIT is tracking a problem involving the Blackboard Wiki tool. When users try to create or access an existing Bb wiki, an error is generated. DoIT staff are working with Blackboard, Inc. to troubleshoot this issue and we hope to have a solution soon.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

Computer Science Curriculum for 2013 and beyond

What should be in the curriculum for a computer science undergraduate program in the next decade? What knowledge and skills should every CS major learn? What learning objectives should we set? How can we ensure that the field remains focused on the disciplinary core while embracing an outward-looking view that actively seeks to work with and integrate into other disciplines such as Biology, Engineering, linguistics and Sociology.

About every ten years the ACM and IEEE Computer Society jointly sponsor the development of a Computing Curricula volume on Computer Science. Their joint task force has just released a Strawman draft of the the CS2013 report and invites comments from a diverse audience with the goal of broadening participation in computer science. The report seeks to be international in scope and to offer curricular and pedagogical guidance applicable to a wide range of institutions.

Winder’s essay details how an embarassing experience led him to the belief that “we can either take command of our mistakes, or let them command us.” “I realized I had already screwed up as bad as anyone could, undermining an easy victory, looking like a fool to the world. If I tried again, how could I do any worse? Knowing that, I relinquished my fears,” he writes. His full essay can be read here.
