business style is more than just what you wear — it’s how you present yourself

Matt Wood, Residential Facilities, Awarded Industrial Hygiene Certificate
Matt Wood ‘13, M.P.P ‘15, safety and security coordinator in Residential Facilities, was recently awarded a certificate in industrial hygiene from the Chesapeake Region Safety Council. Wood has worked in Residential Facilities for over 15 years, beginning in 2009 as a student maintenance assistant.
Working through the Chesapeake Region Safety Council, Wood completed over 200 hours of training related to occupational safety in general industry, construction safety, and industrial hygiene. Industrial hygiene is the study of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling hazards that can affect people's health and well-being. Industrial hygienists are known for using objective data and observation to recognize and evaluate hazards.
“The certification better positions Student Affairs to address industrial hygiene issues and concerns,” said Frank Caldwell, acting director, residential facilities. “Matt will continue to apply these skills in Residential Facilities and work closely with UMBC Environmental Safety and Health staff to address resident and employee health and safety concerns.”

As a reminder, the 2024-2025 PMP evaluation period runs from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. Department heads and supervisors are required to complete and submit a PMP evaluation form for each of their regular/grant funded Exempt and Non-Exempt direct reports for the 12-month period stated above.
The deadline for submitting these evaluations is Friday May 2, 2025.

Blanket Making, Take Back the Night, Elections, & More!
Greetings SWSA Members,
Below are some April events to look out for and organizational updates to be aware of.
APRIL EVENTS:
Food Donation Service Event | Friday, April 4th from 9:00-11:30 am
- Assisting in the transport of food donation items for the Wisdom Institute and Retriever Essentials.
- Please contact Service Chair Danny Rascovar (drascov1@umbc.edu) for volunteer details. He needs 2-4 volunteers!
Blanket Making Service Event | Monday, April 7th from 12:00-1:00 pm | Sherman Hall B-Wing 334
- SWSA members will create no-sew fleece blankets to donate to a nearby organization.
Town Hall with Dr. Wiechelt - Social Work Chair & Associate Dean | Thursday, April 17th from 12:00-1:00 pm | Sherman Hall B-Wing 334
Take Back the Night | Thursday, April 17th from 5:00-8:00 pm | Commons Mainstreet
- Sponsored by the Women's, Gender, & Equity Center, this event will include a plethora of events in support of Sexual Assault Awareness month. SWSA members are encouraged to attend!
APRIL UPDATES:
Last Day for Food Donations
The last day to drop off food donation items for our Wisdom Institute food drive will be April 4th! This is also the day of our Food Donation Service Event.
SWSA Fall 2026 Executive Board Election
If you are interested in nominating yourself for the SWSA main campus executive board for academic year 2025-2026,
YOU MUST refer to the email sent from Ms. Aurora Rivera (
aurorar2@umbc.edu) titled "SWSA Board Members Nomination Applications Open," sent on March 28th. This email includes the roles of the positions that are open for the upcoming academic year, requirements for running for a position, who to send your nomination statement to, and the last date to nominate yourself.
An online election form will be sent to SWSA Members on April 8th and voting will close on April 11th. Further questions must be directed to current board members through email or GroupMe.
