Real People Profiles: Melissa Hom
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Member of College Democrats and Hispanic Latino Student Union, Assistant Director of the Office of Community and Governmental Affairs in SGA and a STRiVEr.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I encourage students to get involved in the community and on-campus.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love everything I am involved in and if I had more time I would definitely be a part of so much more. I love going to College Democrats meetings because I love to listen to everyone talk and debate about different things, and they always have great things to say. They also have had some great speakers in the past and I’m excited for what they have in store for this semester.
Hispanic Latino Student Union is one of the clubs that always makes you feel welcome, even if you are not of Hispanic or Latino descent. We have a lot of different people that are a part of the club that are not Hispanic or Latino but are interested in our culture. We also throw awesome events! El Encuentro in the fall and Sazonate in the spring, both of which include lots of salsa, meringue, bachata as well as free food!
And of course one of my favorite things is OCGA and SGA in general. Office of Community and Governmental Affairs helps students get involved in the community and we also lobby in Annapolis. Right now, we’re doing some pretty great things that I am so excited for everyone to be a part of and I am so excited to start this semester as the new assistant director! What I love about SGA as a whole is the connections I’ve made and people I’ve met. Everyone there is so completely great and really wants to help students do whatever they think needs to be done on campus, and they’re all really funny people too. I’m so glad I am a part of such a great community.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I think the most important thing I have learned while here is to make UMBC yours. I know everyone hears that a lot, but it’s so important to make the most of these 4 years because like high school, you’re going to remember these next years for the rest of your life. The friends you make, the classes you love, the events you go to, the awesome collection of free t-shirts you have, all of these things will be with you forever. When you look back on these things you want to be able to say “I helped make this happen” or “That’s why you should never forget your parking permit.” These are the years that will define who we are and what we make of ourselves, so I say live it up while you can.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Concerts, pizza, musicals, volleyball, television, ukuleles, music, baseball, singing and board games!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: My favorite spot on campus is probably the volleyball courts near Chesapeake because I don’t have to walk all the way to Walker to play!

Earlier this morning, I successfully completed the car emissions inspection that is mandatory for all Maryland drivers. (Coming from Ohio, where they allow any piece of junk on their roads, just having my car generally inspected was a bit intimidating, and so needing to pass an additional emissions test just added to it.)
Of course, in true Millennial fashion, I needed to let off some steam after the process was relatively underwhelming. I posted the news on Facebook to let people know about my new, small feat, noting I had moved another step closer to being a full-fledged Marylander.
Not too long after I posted, someone commented that my next task was to put Old Bay on my food. Luckily, while I haven’t been moved to the point of putting it on everything I eat, I do know what Old Bay is and that I like it.
But aside from the recommendation, this person was also making a more subtle argument, suggesting that Old Bay seasoning is a critical part of the Maryland experience. It doesn’t make sense to take this literally–of course we can claim ourselves as Maryland citizens without subjecting ourselves to taste tests of Old Bay. But the larger point, that Old Bay is one ingredient mixing with others to form a “Maryland experience,” is interesting to think about.
What other symbols do you think make up a large part of the Maryland experience, whether that’s based on going to school here for a short time or your living here for several years? What are things that you experience that you associate with living in Maryland?

Meredith Oyen, assistant professor of history, will give a talk at the Center for Force and Diplomacy at Temple University on Thursday, March 29. Day Three - A Little Goes a Long Way
Luke 13:18-21 (NIV)
18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”
20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pound] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”
Reflection:
A missionary in Cambodia recently shared his thoughts about missions:“If one person were to teach and convert one person a year and teach them well enough that they would convert one person a year with that pattern continually repeating itself with each convert, that one chain of events would reach the entire world’s population in 33 years.“Just like a small mustard seed growing into a full tree or a little amount of yeast causing dough to rise, the Kingdom message is so powerful. Without it, there is no hope or healing or real love. When Jesus sows His message, the outcome may be unpredictable, but when one life is touched and set free at a time - every time this happens- victory is won. May God’s victory increase and expand. May we trust and believe that God’s Kingdom message is powerful to accomplish more than we can imagine.
Responding to the Transmission:
Spend time in prayer today proclaiming God’s victory in our lives and over the whole world.Ask God for prayers of His heart so that we may go out boldly trusting in His power and proclaiming His love and freedom to others.
