The following dissertation support group and writing consultant information is relevant to students from UMBC, UMCP, or UMB. Please register or make an appointment early to get a spot in a group or with a consultant on your campus. In some cases, space is limited. The DH endorses involvement in these campus-sponsored groups.

UMBC: (From Dr. Emilie Stuber) The group will be lead by Assistant Director, Dr. Bonita Johnsen, and she is hoping to get it started ASAP. She plans to run the group on Thursday afternoons, at 1:00, 2:00, or 2:30.  Previous group members have been contacted; new members as welcome. Members who have already attended the group will not need to have an intake appointment with us, but we do ask that all new members schedule an intake appointment and let the receptionist know that they are interested in joining the Dissertation Support Group. http://www.umbc.edu/counseling/, 410-455-2472. Students come to the Writing Center for individual help with brainstorming ideas, organizing structure, writing a draft, and revising and polishing prose.  The Writing Center - SMC Campus Center, 621 W. Lombard Street, Suite 302. For Appointment please call 410-706-7725. This service is free for students at UMB.

Innovating for Society: Realizing the
Promise and Potential of Computing

Dr. Farnam Jahanian

The computing discipline is at the center of an ongoing societal transformation. The explosive growth of scientific and social data, wireless connectivity at broadband speeds for billions of mobile endpoints, and seamless access to computational resources in the “cloud” are transforming the way we work, learn, play, and communicate. Advances in computation and data-enabled techniques will continue to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and engineering innovation, with the impact becoming more pervasive throughout society for decades to come.  Dr. Jahanian will focus his talk on some of the technological and societal trends that are shaping our future and providing new opportunities for foundational research and education. He will describe how these advances influence the portfolio of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate at NSF and, therefore, also serve as key drivers of economic competitiveness and are crucial to achieving national priorities.

Farnam Jahanian serves as the National Science Foundation Assistant Director for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate. He guides CISE, with a budget of over $635 million, in its mission to uphold the nation’s leadership in computer and information science and engineering through support of fundamental and transformative advances that are a key driver of economic competitiveness and that are crucial to achieving national priorities. Dr. Jahanian is also co-chair of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council Committee on Technology, providing overall coordination for the activities of 15 government agencies.

Dr. Jahanian is on leave from the University of Michigan, where he holds the Edward S. Davidson Collegiate Professorship and served as Chair for Computer Science and Engineering from 2007 – 2011 and as Director of the Software Systems Laboratory from 1997 – 2000. His research on Internet infrastructure security formed the basis for the Internet security company Arbor Networks, which he co-founded in 2001. He served as Chairman of Arbor Networks until its acquisition by Tektronix Communication in 2010. Dr. Jahanian holds a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

With costs for higher education rising continuously, institutions’ affordability and access programs are rapidly becoming a major factor for student success during the college years and beyond. In order for higher education to help society move toward greater equity, institutions must be accessible to diverse populations. February’s STARS Facts and Best Practices blog focuses on PAE Credit 10: Affordability and Access Programs.

Affordability and Access Programs
PAE 10 recognizes institutions that have policies and programs in place to make higher education accessible and affordable for low-income students. Such policies may include:
• Programs to minimize the cost of attendance for low-income students
• Participation in federal TRIO programs
• Programs to guide parents of low-income students through the higher education experience

STARS Facts – Affordability and Access
97 percent of STARS-rated institutions have policies and programs in place to promote accessibility and affordability for low income students. However, these policies and programs differ among institutions.

Highlighted Institutions

• Western University (STARS Silver, August 2011) participates in the Student Access Guarantee program in partnership with the government of Ontario. Under this program, every qualified Ontario student is guaranteed access to Ontario public colleges and universities. Through this guarantee, students’ financial needs not fully met by the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) are covered by Western University.
• New Mexico State University (STARS Bronze, September 2011) recently began the Red to Green money management program to help students learn to manage their finances. The program was designed by NMSU students themselves thanks to a grant from the Student Success Office. Red to Green is a requirement for all students that have acquired loans to help pay for college.
• Anne Arundel Community College (STARS Silver, November 2011) ranks third among the 16 community colleges in Maryland for lowest tuition and fees. AACC believes that no student should be restricted from attending college because of limited financial resources. The college offers grants, scholarships, loans, and employment programs to eligible full-time and part-time students in all degree programs and most certificate programs.
• The Watson and Odyssey Four Year Cohort Program at Elon University (STARS Silver, December 2011) in North Carolina supports affordability for low-income and first-generation students. This fall, 26 scholars will enter the program with their full financial need met by grants from university, federal and state sources and federally guaranteed loans. The students will receive educational stipends and study abroad grants. The Watson/Odyssey program uses a peer support model coupled with administrative support.
