We want our graduate students to have the best educational experience possible while supporting their personal and professional development. This is why we have partnered with Etio and the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley, to administer the gradSERU (Graduate Student Experience in the Research University) with the support of our president and provost. Your feedback is critical as we strive to make improvements to our curriculum, climate, and campus. Please consider taking some time to complete the survey today.

Students have multiple chances to be entered into a drawing to win one $500 award in Retriever Dollars over the course of the survey administration. The earlier you respond, the more times you will be entered into drawings. Four winners will be selected by March 28th. Retriever Dollars can be used across campus to pay for tuition, purchase textbooks, postage, event tickets, UMBC apparel, and much more. Publishing your work is considered one of the primary pillars of a research project, graduate students are often hunted by policies and recommendations to publish several papers as part of their graduate experience, some use their publications as part of their thesis or dissertation and some programs even require students to be a first author in order to be considered for graduation from a PhD program. 


How do you even start the process of writing a publication? What are impact factors and how do you decide if your data is impactful enough to be submitted to a particular publication or journal? We have invited a panel of productive and avid publishing faculty at UMBC from our CAHSS college to talk about these and other topics, the intention of this event is to demystify the publishing hardship, learn how to overcome perfectionism (when is my paper ready to be submitted for publication?), learn how to process criticism, how to manage your time to be more productive (when am I supposed to find the time to sit down and write?), how to overcome writers block, and more.

A Privacy and Security Analysis of myUMBC Answers: UMBC SFS Scholar Winter Study 2025

Generative AI has the potential to improve user search experiences by supporting natural language querying and providing more detailed and domain-specific responses. UMBC is seeking to provide this convenience to myUMBC users through the myUMBC Answers system, which enables users to access both personal and UMBC services information from the myUMBC search bar. In this talk, we investigate the resiliency of Answers against several common generative AI attacks that were performed by the UMBC Scholarship for Service (SFS) scholars in collaboration with other students and the UMBC Division of Information Technology (DoIT). We first provide an overview of the study and the myUMBC Answers system before discussing the types of attacks which were launched against the system. We then explore the behavior of the Answers system in response to these attacks. Finally, we outline the recommendations provided to DoIT by the study participants to improve the security and user experience of myUMBC Answers.

Christian Badolato is a PhD student working with Professor Roberto Yus focusing on data privacy in the Internet of Things at UMBC after having received his master’s degree from the same university. He has several years of experience as a software architect and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional.

Maya Schreiber’s scientific abstract was accepted to the Society of Women Engineers Collegiate Competition for Undergraduates. The CBEE student then attended the 2025 Society of Women Engineers WE Local Conference in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on March 7-8, 2025.

Maya gave a 10 minute oral presentation titled “Measuring Oxygen Consumption to Understand Optimal Chronic Wound Healing Environments” and engaged in a Q&A session about her work with the judges and attendees. Her research poster was also displayed for the duration of the conference. The judges evaluated the presenters and awarded Maya with first place in the Undergraduate category. Congratulations to Maya on all of her success!

Meet Marilin, a Media and Communication Studies (MCS) major with a Psychology minor and a Chinese Certificate, set to graduate in May 2025. Her journey to the MCS major began undecided with a focus on psychology, but she later shifted to better fit her interests of event planning and marketing. Dissatisfied with the technological emphasis of other paths, Marilin found her niche in MCS through UMBC’s "What Can I Do With My Major" resource. She loves learning about how communication has evolved over the years, with classes like Social Media Networking and Media Globalization being formative experiences. These classes helped Marilin understand the practical aspects of market analysis, fueling her love for the major.


Outside of the classroom, Marilin loves to spend her time being creative! Her hobbies include drawing on Procreate, crocheting, event planning, and listening to true crime podcasts. Marilin is also very social, spending her free time hosting game nights and going out for food with friends in Old Ellicott City. On the weekends, she balances shifts at the Campus Information Center desk in the Commons with spending quality time with her family (and her beloved cat Yuki!) Marilin is also a Resident Assistant on campus and enjoys planning events for her residents as well as getting to know them. Finally, she is a marketing intern with UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies, working hard to post deadlines, events, and other important information.


Looking forward, Marilin hopes to have a career in Marketing or Event Planning. Her internship and other roles at UMBC have equipped her with the skills she needs to succeed in these fields, such as search engine optimization (SEO) strategies, branding, and customer service. Another goal of hers is to create messaging stickers that feature her original bunny character! Reflecting on her time here, Marilin says she will miss the strong knit community of UMBC, and being able to wave to familiar faces while walking around campus. While she is still uncertain about what company she wants to work for, Marilin is confident her experiences at UMBC have prepared her to thrive in any professional environment that values collaboration and creativity.
