Day One - The Year of the Lord’s Favor

Luke 4:14-15, 18-19 (NIV)

14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Reflection

Some of us have gone to school with people who later went on to become celebrities. There is a sense that we know them better than others do and we may even feel a sense of kinship. Here we see Jesus returning to his home town and his reputation is going ahead of him. His public ministry is just starting and there is an excitement to hear what this rising celebrity has to say. There were probably many familiar faces in the crowd when he got up to speak and maybe even people he spent considerable time with growing up. But how well did they really know him? The magnitude of what Jesus said to them is huge. This was the beginning of a brand new era. The time was ripe for God’s great rescue of the poor and the oppressed. Salvation was standing right in front of them uniquely in the person of Jesus. Anyone who just wanted to see Jesus in old familiar ways missed this. Anyone who was satisfied with hearing some good teachings or seeing some miracles didn’t understand. But for those who embraced this message and embraced Jesus as he was presenting himself, this was a great moment of hope.

Responding to the Transmission

At times we can be like the crowds, familiar with Jesus but content to just hear about him or watch from a distance. But today, let’s proclaim this gospel message of why Jesus came. Let’s proclaim that this is the year of the Lord’s favor. And as we proclaim this, let’s place our whole life before Jesus and pray that this message would resonate with our being and that we would live in and out of this hope.

Kelly Clarkson of American Idol/Since U Been Gone/Miss Independentfame has voiced her opinion on the Republican presidential primary.

Via Twitter the pop star explained

I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.

Clarkson, who has previously identified as a Republican but said she voted Democrat in 2008, drew some criticism from her followers causing her to take to the Twitter again to further explain…

I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he’s my favorite.

Meanwhile, sales of Clarkson’s most recent album Stronger have increased by 192 percent on Amazon.com.

Ron Paul’s campaign thanked Clarkson for her “kind words.”  The candidate is taking a break from campaigning for New Year’s.

In related news – HAPPY NEW YEAR!  But really you should be excited for the results of the Des Moines Register Iowa Poll!  It’s the last poll before the caucuses on Tuesday, and a lot’s riding on it for Paul and the other candidates.

The UMBC chess team headed into the 2011 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship with a record nine titles to its name. The competition known informally as the Pan-Am, was held December 27 to 30 in Fort Worth, Texas. Since the tournament began in 1946, dozens of universities throughout the Americas have participated. The Retrievers won their first Pan-Am title in 1996, and then embarked on a five-year title streak from 1998 to 2002. This year, the University of Texas at Dallas came in first with six points, UMBC came in second with 5 points, and Texas Tech and New York University tied for third with 4.5 points each. “It was an exciting finish, because we could have won right up until the last match,” says Alan Sherman, Chess Director. The University of Texas at Brownsville surprisingly did not make the cut for the Final Four even though they were the highest ranking team going into the tournament. The UMBC team, all on chess scholarships, is composed of students not only with exceptional chess skills but also with strong academic records, Sherman says. UMBC requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA to maintain chess scholarships. The Retrievers last won the Pan-Am title in 2009, and took second last year. Luke 2:41-52 (NIV)

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Reflect:

This is really a unique story, recorded to help reveal the uniqueness of Jesus for us.  Jesus is God’s Son, and the ramifications of that are incredible. Through this incident, Mary and Joseph are once again reminded that this son of theirs was perhaps not really theirs after all.  This ordeal caused Mary to experience anxiety and fear, but it also revealed to her that the person of Jesus and how He was to live was something far greater than what she could understand in that moment.  And Mary was able to ultimately respond in reverence as she acknowledged this.

Respond:

This story is a reminder to us of how we can become familiar with our ideas about God, perhaps stifling our relationship with Him.  Emmanuel, God with us now through the Spirit is a constant reminder that we are in relationship with God, like no other!  As we celebrate during this Christmas season, may this revelation come afresh to us, filling us with greater reverence for Him.  Let’s welcome God to once again take His rightful place in our hearts as we let go of our own notions of what God should be like.  Let’s pray for each of the Agape churches to live in greater reverence and love for the Lord, especially as we begin 2012. May our affections and reverence overflow!

The last year has been full of discussion about the growing disparities in pay in the United States. But there is at least one sector where wealth is going up instead of down.

That sector?

Congress.

An article for the New York Times reports that members of Congress’ earnings have continued to go up during tough economic times, causing some to question their effectiveness.

The fact that rich people are in Congress isn’t usually that big a deal. But when Congress struggles mightily to take care of the economic business of the country — from the recent payroll tax extension fight to the debt limit fight — it starts to seem pretty evident to the average, everyday voter that members really don’t understand the economic problems their constituents face.”

Can rich members of Congress really represent the average American?

As previously announced, all Bb course shell enrollments are being updated daily at 9 a.m., pending further development and testing of the new process. Reminder: All Bb course shells are unavailable (to students) until the instructor of record makes the course available.
