The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) is a 10-week

 paid summer internship with opportunities in the US

 Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, for women

 and minority students who are currently enrolled in Science,

 Technology (IT), Engineering, and Math majors at an

 accredited college or university.

 MLEF MISSION

 Provide opportunities for educational advancement and

 career development through an award winning internship

 program for women and minority students in Science,

 Technology (IT), Engineering and Math.

ELIGIBILITY

·         Applicants must be a US citizen

·         Undergraduate students completing their sophomore

·         year in Spring 2012 through PhD candidates

·         Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

You are invited to participate in the 6^th Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat. The retreat is sponsored by the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMCP).

The purpose of the retreat is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate who are majoring or who are planning to major in engineering and/or computer science to build their career, professional, and leadership skills; as well as to network with corporations and student leaders from 4-year colleges/universities and 2-year community colleges in the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis area. The 2011 retreat included students from: George Mason University, George Washington University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery College, Morgan State University, Prince George’s Community College, UMBC, and UMCP.

The retreat provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to network with students from local colleges and universities who are studying engineering and/or computer science.  The retreat will be held January 21-22, 2012 (this is the weekend before classes begin at UMCP, UMBC, Morgan, Johns Hopkins).  The retreat will be held at the Sheraton Columbia in Columbia, MD.  The retreat is a two-day retreat with one (1) overnight stay.  There is no cost to students to participate in the retreat.  Students who participate have to commit to participating in all retreat activities over the course of the two days.  Transportation is provided, additional information will be forthcoming to students who participate. 

The retreat is funded by the CIA, W. L. Gore, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Accenture.  Representatives from these companies attend the retreat and facilitate most of the workshops.  If you are interested in attending the conference in January, Please go to http://www.cmse.umd.edu/events/retreat.html to find more information about the retreat.  Registration is now open!  The deadline to complete the registration form in December 21, 2011.

DoIT and the Faculty Development Center will be offering the Course Redesign/ Hybrid Course Redesign Workshop on January 20, 2012 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in ENGR 023. In the morning session participants will learn the principles of good course design, including designing assignments and assessments that help students achieve the goals for their learning. In the afternoon session faculty will apply the principles of good course design from the morning session to planning a hybrid course (part-online, part face-to-face). This workshop is open to all full or part time UMBC faculty. To register, please go to this event on the myUMBC Training site.

The workshop will also help meet the requirements for a one-time course-redesign stipend through the Alternate Delivery program (ADP), which is sponsored by both the Office of the Provost, and the Office of Summer, Winter and Special Programs (OSWSP).

ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL BREAK!

The Arc trip involves students serving the mentally and physically disabled population at the Arc of Carroll County. 

The Environmental trip has a focus on sustainable living in urban environments. 

The TEAR trip (Through the Eyes of a Refugee) serves the refugee population of Baltimore.

The Animal Advocacy trip explores several aspects of animal rights and humane treatment of animals.

The Day in the Life trip focuses on the homeless population of Baltimore City.
