Joan Korenman, English, on ABC
Tweens, teens, and kids of all ages are “plugged in,” and parents are always looking for ways to make sure their time on the internet is safe and productive.
ABC reports that Joan Korenman, professor emerita of English, is helping parents achieve that goal: she created a page on UMBC’s web site that holds a host of links to “websites for girls.”
Korenman is also the founding director of UMBC’s gender and women’s studies program and CWIT. She moderates WMST-L, one of the longest running online academic discussion lists, and she started work on the “websites for girls” while directing CWIT. Her UMBC web page provides additional resources on gender issues and resources in women’s studies.
The story, “Looking for websites to encourage and challenge your tween or teen? Here are 5 places to start” appeared on the ABC website on October 12.

UMBC Dining Services Named Chartwell’s “National Account of the Year”

Researcher of the week: Kelin Brace
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
When and how did you find out that you could do independent research work as a UMBC undergraduate?
Before coming to UMBC, I had heard on several different occasions that undergraduate research was very big on campus. As a Meyerhoff scholar, I was encouraged to find a mentor and carry out my own research.
How did you find a mentor and decide on a project? How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I had one of my teachers my as a mentor, and I requested to work with her because I enjoyed her in class and found her research interesting. We chose a project for me that would fit well into the lab's current work while still giving me enough independence to work on my own.
What academic background did you have before you started on this research?
Before starting my research I had taken the chemistry classes needed to have a basic understanding of our research. However, in my more advanced courses I am constantly learning things that apply to the research I am doing now.
How did you learn about applying for the Undergraduate Research Award? Was the application hard? Did your mentor help you?
My mentor suggested I apply for the URA. The application was not difficult, but my mentor did help me condense the scope of the whole project to the short application.
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
The teachers at UMBC are very passionate about their research. If you are honestly interested in what they are doing, most people will be very happy to talk to you and maybe even let you join their lab.
What are your career goals?
I would like to pursue an MD/PhD degree upon graduation.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my first semester at UMBC.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Coordinator of Campus and Civic Engagement
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I encourage students to learn through identifying and solving common problems collaboratively.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy listening to each student's story and observing students discover their power and agency.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: While I have not been at UMBC for too long yet, the most important thing I learned in college is that learning requires risk-taking; we have to be willing to put our comfort on the line in order to receive a pay-off that might not be guaranteed. It's a scary proposition, but it's necessary.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: While shopping at the grocery store my first weekend in Baltimore, I discovered that some distant relative of mine makes amazing cookies ("Berger" cookies?) -- I picked some up on that trip, and now I'm addicted!

Georgia businessman and Republican Presidential hopeful Herman Cain thinks he has your number. Or maybe 3 numbers.
MrCain is pitching a 9-9-9 economic plan which is causing quite a stir in political circles.
Cain, if elected, has promised to set business taxes at a flat rate of 9%, a flat individual tax of 9%, and a 9% national sales tax rate.
His campaign has recently taken the Presidential spotlight as he won a Florida straw poll last month and tied with Rick Perry for second place in a recent Washington Post poll.
But video gamers are may not get his vote.
Cain’s 9-9-9 plan has caused some suspicion among those in the gaming community. They suspect it is based on the default tax rates in the popular computer game, Sim City.
In Sim City, the default settings are for a 9 % commercial tax, 9 % industrial tax, and a 9% residential tax. Cain campaign spokesman JD Gordon, when asked about the similarities between Cain’s plan and the Sim City game replied,
“Well, we all like 9-9-9.”
